I agree, but I hope that we haven't put all our eggs in this basket. If Fabregas does not come (which looks likely) I hope we have fall back options ready. I feel okay going in with Cleverley and Anderson, but if we could get a quality creator like Fabreagas that would be amazing.
I think it might be because the media have been publishing nonsense about Moyes not having the pulling power of Ferguson. If United fail to make marquee signing(s) that would reflect on the new manager (as if that was somehow directly his fault).
The media conveniently forget that Ferguson regularly failed to sign players that were his first choice.
No clubs put "all their eggs in one basket". All clubs have contingence plans if first, second and even third choices don't materialise. Its probably also a case of leaving things as they are until the next transfer window or even next summer by which time new targets might become available rather than waste good money on secondary choices.

I disagree when you are looking to get the very best players there are not many back up plan's. If we don't get Fabregas the next player we get will most likely be a drop in quality. So when I say 'back up plan' I don't mean Felliani (no disrespect) or Cabaye(who I like) I mean real quality. I don't think this midfield as it will can win any of the major trophies personally, hopefully they prove me wrong but I feel we need immediate investment. We have been thinking next summer for about 3-4 years now.
Well if there are no other top targets available and you don't count the lower-quality targets, what do you expect us to do?

Dont understand it either why United is so tight here. It's a superb player from a club that does not need to sell plus they always say we're loaded. To try to get him on the cheap is contra-productive here if you look at the shape of our midfield. Bid 40 or 45m, and let's get it done

The important thing is that we bring in both Ronaldo and Fabregas amd Schweinsteiger. Do that and perhaps we'll have a chance to retain the league trophy.

So what happens if Barca turns this down and says that it's not enough? At what point should United walk away? What does it look like if we start at 25m, go to 30m and then suddenly jump to 45m? We look desperate (which we may be, but that's a different point). In that circumstance Barca are simply going to try to milk us for more.
If we don't look like we've got an upper limit that we'll go to then Barca will simply keep increasing the price.
But Moyes has already done that by saying we don't have a budget we have a blank cheque to work with this summer.
Just tell them straight it's our last offer. If they play hard, walk away and go for other targets.
£40 million should be our take it or leave it offer. We get a world class player and they get a decent sum for a squad player.
Thats a quote out of context. He has no specific budget to work to, rather than having a blank cheque. He asks for a player, the club tries to secure that player. That's not the same as they could buy anyone they wanted for an unlimited sum of money.
That's the problem. There aren't any other targets of a similar calibre that are remotely available... hence we're between a rock and a hard place. We have to balance the requirement of the squad against not being fleeced.
I'm with the Freak on this one. We're all in pure speculation land but if we're going to land Fabregas the offer has to be a robust one -- but it has to be made it's our best and final offer. This can't go to the very last day of the transfer window.
It is impossible to get all of them, we should be happy to get even one of them. If we get all of them (as I said impossible) we would be the main favorite for UCL and we would walk the league.

There are players around who are as good as and better than Fabregas. Its about availability and what United decide are alternative targets. They might be good as but might be not as high-profile as Fabregas. Vidic was relatively unknown when we bought but what a player he turned out to be. Or it could be that someone like Felliani might become an even better player with the kind of players already at United. Its the kind of think a manager knows better than I.
When United bid again for Fabregas this week. You will understand how I know.

I'll be honest, I think Fabregas and his agent are using one of the biggest clubs in football who are in desperate need of a player in his mould to get an improved deal at his boyhood club. I'm not only talking about money either, I think he doesn't feel fully appreciated by the club and fans and is using this whole affair to show them that he's staying despite the interest in him by other top clubs. This is offcourse complete guess work on my part but that's what I think is happening behind the scenes.
I understand people that are saying it's been a waste of time when United keep pursuing a player Barcelona have clearly no intention of selling. On the other hand people that say it's embarrassing are too worried about the club's image and mistake the transfer window for a dick measuring competition. It's just what top clubs do, they go after top targets and sometimes they fail, it's nothing to be ashamed of. The only thing that's embarrassing is their perception on a failed transfer. Madrid went after Neymar this summer and he chose Barca over us. Do I think it's embarrassing? Hell no, I couldn't give two fecks about what others think about it. But I do think that every second the club spent going after him has been a waste of time when you look at the outcome.
My whole point is that saying it's been a waste of time doesn't equal to thinking that your club are embarrassing themselves. This is offcourse my opinion on the matter and I do understand that different people have different opinions.

If you don't think its fishy that the same day Tata Martino says its up to Fabregas to decide his fate, Andoni is some where in the middle east suddenly claiming United have 'renounced the signing'' (like the word is even used often regarding transfers) that's your problem. I don't think the money is the issue behind this transfer to be honest. If it were then Fabregas would have been a Utd player already.
Vidic was a player who was wanted by teams, also he improved once he got here. I agree their may be low profile talent out there. But on Fabreags' level? I doubt it. As well as being a good player he is a signal of Moyes' and the new regimes' intent. If you are talented the way scouting is these days there is no way you are unknown, someone has seen you.
My point is don't assume there are always Plan b's, I hope we have one though. Someone said we want our first signing to be high profile in that case their are not many options left...
I agree with you here. I don't think he wants to leave Barca at all but it may just be a small reminder to them that if they don't use him as often as he likes then he may consider other options in the future. That might not be the case at all but I can see where you're coming from.
