Fabregas

This has become a circular argument. United will always get players, both exceptional and not so exceptional. How rich United are has a profound impact on who we buy which gives us a better opportunity to improve our team than financially poor clubs.

We are debating different things then. I am talking about this window right now, not Manchester United's buying power. It's all good having the money, but where are the actual players.....

When I say a Plan B I am talking about a top quality acquisition not a lower quality one and I mean in this transfer window.

Players we want aren't always available. No need for contingency plans. It's a simple case of going for what we need or make do with what we have. No point filling the squad for the sake of buying.

We are testing their resolve, how many players have left when teams have said they are not for sale? He has not been so impressive that it is beyond comprehension that he may leave. I am not saying that we will get him, but I have no problem with us trying People saying it is embarrassing are off the mark for me... That was what I was getting at mainly.

If we can improve on our current options in midfield but it is not a world class player I would have no problem with that. It doesn't have to be Fabregas/Thiago or die. There are a couple of midfielders who many not be the very best but can improve our midfield.

I don't get asking for the thread to be closed. Just don't enter it.

Anyway if we really had any intention of putting in another bid, wouldn't we have done it already? A lot of time has passed since the last confirmed bid and nothing has been achieved (at least from what little we know). It's quite hard to remain optimistic.

Hm. I don't know how the "scouting" has been affected by the Moyes appointment, but we seem to have been looking for years for a central midfielder to play alongside Carrick.

It is clear, without having to cite a list of possibilities, that there must be better central midfielders out there that are better players than Anderson and Cleverley....and who are not Fabregas, Modric, Schweinsteiger, even Fellaini.

Bit harsh on Cleverley, we'd do well to find a squad player of his standard, he just needs to get his fitness levels up a notch.

In my opinion, it is a really top class midfielder we need, like the ones above (bar Fellelbow) to take the midfield and team to the next level.

Believe me Cina, I think we need a really top class CM too, but we don't seem to be able to find one! All I'm saying that it would be possible to find a CM to be potentially better than Cleverley and Anderson. I really don't wanna opine on Cleverley because of the abuse that will ensue.

I don't think the scouting has been affected or anything like that. My point of view is that the season starts in two weeks and we have not yet signed a midfielder. People seem to think i'm questioning the long term future of the club which would be silly. I'm talking about the immediate future. Anderson/Cleverley may surprise us but I doubt it. If the Fabregas saga falls through (which looks likely) I hope we already have a replacement ready. No reinforcements would not be a good thing for me. I think Fergie got the absolute maximum out of this team.

Yes, I was agreeing with you. And I have similar sentiments about Anderson and Cleverley. TBH, I like Petrucci as a proper CM, elegant player, better passer and free-kick taker than the aforementioned but god knows how he will ever progress to the first team!

I personally think that if Cleverly can move up another level or two, he'll become much more than just a squad player. He's still young for a CM, so hopefully he makes that big step within the next three years or so.

Regardless of that though, we are still in need of another midfielder or two.

We'll see, I've never seen enough from Cleverley to suggest he'll be one of our core midfielders, but he can certainly be a good squad option.

How old is Petrucci? What do you think is stopping him reaching the first team?

21? Maybe age, but I would like to see him given opportunities, even if it's coming on for 10-15 mins in a home game when we are winning 4-0 or 5-0.

I don't hear him mentioned much anymore....

I am losing faith/hope/interest in this saga for one reason and one reason only...to me it makes no sense. On the public face we have united bidding repeatedly for a player who says he doesn't want to move and his club say they don't want to sell him. Now we know that united are not performing monkeys and this is n FM so thye must have had some encouragement that a bid would be accepted. Taking that into consideration the length of time between bids and the amounts being bid make no sense what so ever.

so all things considered if we believe that we can get him then why not force Barca's hand put in 50m Euro bid that they could not turn down. I don't think he that is his value in the market but for us yes he is worth that and every penny. Fabregas would not only provide us with a world class midfielder he would also give us a similar replacement for paul scholes and the perfect partner for our current best midfielder Michael Carrick.

But i just don't see us doing that. I'm not saying they do not know what they are doing because obviously Mr Edwards and Mr Moyes have more information at their disposal to make such a decision but imo the current cours eof action just makes no sense.

Presumably they think we'll eventually get him for less than the 50m? I know the smaller bids seems like a frustrating waste of time but they're not going to deliberately overpay if they're genuinely confident they can get him for less than that. It's a risk but I suppose that's part of any negotiation.

It's actually the lack of sense in this transfer that makes me relatively confident. We must have some pretty solid information to be pursuing Cesc with this much determination and patience, otherwise we're absolute idiots. I don't think we're idiots, so.... :)

I get that, but it just makes no sense to me ( a simple ingnorant muppet) if i want to get something even if i know i can possibly get it cheaper if i hold out and play teh patient bidding game i would rather garuntee i get it by paying slightly over the odds. Again it comes down to worth/value.

Maybe it's just a case that Moyes and Edwards do not see him as having the value that I do, but then again they are in charge of the club and i am just a fan.

I agree they must be very confident that this will go through as their present course of action makes no sense otherwise. I guess we will know a lot more if (when) a thrid bid goes in.

We poaching Cesc from Barca instead of Wenger?

Howard Nurse, like any of the rest of us, hasn't a bull's clue of what's going on.
I try to follow his posts but it seem he has got 99% wrong so far. I thought Nurse, as he works on BBC sport, should be more correct and ITK but I'm surprised by his lack of stuff he get correct.

The hilarious joke on twitter at the moment is to follow a 'United sign Fabregas' quote with a link to City 6 United 1. Sides are splitting up.
