Fabregas

It was never off. Journos jumping on snippets, tweet in the hope that they will be proven right. The tweets are posted in here and the whole world seems to fall out our arse.

Conversely, a tweet appearing positive is also jumped upon with over the top excitement.

We need to leave it to those in control and just accept they know a whole lot more about these things than us.

Pretty much it in a nutshell.

You think Barca would permit him to attend a press conference if he wanted to leave?

Maybe Barcelona leaked that he will be speaking at the press conference to make us nervous and put in a serious offer. Yeah, I'm going to roll with this.

If people didn't overreact to every single article or piece of 'news' we wouldn't need to go through this discussion of whether it's off, on or somewhere in between every few hours.

We still have plenty of time. I don't think the time to criticise has yet arrived.

Agree. Can't really see how Moyes and the new management can be criticised for all this. The one thing supporters were always negative about under SAF's last years at the helm was his unwillingness (seemingly) to sign central midfielders. Now we have manager who has clearly stated that he wants to sign one or more midfielders, and who has tried very hard to get one of the very best. If we don't get Fabregas, then at least we will have tried. Still more than enough time to sign someone else. Personally, I'd feel that signing the likes of Fellaini or Cabaye would also strengthen our squad, and that it would be better than not signing anyone at all.

If the window goes, and we have still not signed anyone, then it might be fair to ask questions of Moyes. Not yet though.

I remember reading in Jaap Stam's controversial autobiography that SAF assured him that eventually he would sign him from PSV, but that it would be a rocky ride. SAF just needed one commitment from Stam and that was to accept that it may be lengthy process and that he should not lose his resolve during it. The same happened when we signed Hargreaves, Berbatov and Van Persie in recent history.

I think that is what is going on here. Fabregas, for whatever reason liked the idea of being our midfield maestro and has given us indications he would be willing to sign for us. And so Moyes and co are going through these motions.

It may not work, but such difficult transfers require such processes. When I left my first employer after 11 years of service, and where I was very happy, a new employer came in with a super exciting new job and a tonne extra of cash. They put the idea in my head and it unsettled me. Then they worked away at me until I finally succumbed. Even when I handed in my notice at my employer, they would not happily accept it for over a month and made counter offers etc. It was a rocky process.

It turned out to be a very good move for me, but it took time. Something similar but on bigger proportions is being played out here.

Fergie wasn't unwilling to sign a midfielder. He explained the situation many times.

Never very convincingly though. He was happy to take punts and sign not quite top class players in every other area of the pitch but he kept looking for some magical perfect CM that never existed. His stance was odd.

There is no way Fabregas will say he wishes to leave Barca at a Barca press conference. That doesn't necessarily mean he wants to stay. To be honest, I have a feeling a deal has already been done in the period of quiet time and it is just being drawn out and subject to medical now.

Edit: also it is not the first time we have been told he will speak at a press conference and then he hasn't shown up.

I remember everyone thinking he just didn't place much importance on the centre of midfield but, in hindsight, it looks like the opposite is true. Having witnessed us go for Fabregas and Thiago, I think it's fair to assume that Fergie looked for equally talented played. Hell, he went for Thiago himself.

 How could anyone conclude that from all this? Serious example of clutching at straws there!

I said it was a feeling, my own personal opinion. I think the silence has spoken volumes, added to what the Barca manage said the other day, I think some sort of agreement has been made.

Was just gonna post that last line myself.

He said that Fabregas isn't for sale and we've agreed to accept that. That explains the silence.

The manager said it's up to Fabregas to decide.

I haven't presented anything as fact here, I've expressed an opinion and gut feeling, there's no need to get arsey.

I don't understand why Martino would say it is up to Cesc just for the sporting director to say we have given up our pursuit. It is becoming more likely that Cesc is considering his future at Barca.

I reckon we should close this thread until there's some actual news.
