Fabregas

The problem is probably that we don't have more than £30m to buy players for. Big guns for a guy like Moyes perhaps but to a club like us it's not even half of what we need for a summer.

Eddie has been sent to find this so called warchest, hopefully it will be in place before the transfer deadline.

I really think we are wasting out time here.
Barca have said no twice. Its not about the money for them, they obviously want to keep Cesc.
I cant see Fabregas wanting to leave Barca - he fought hard enough to get there two years ago. He has not yet made the impact that he may have hoped, so im sure he feels he has a point to prove at Barca.

I think so too, if all the talks about the sell-on clause that entitles Arsenal to 50% of Barca's profit are true then it won't be about money either, upping our bid by £5m on each attempt is going to take us to the last day of the transfer window with nothing but a slight hope. I reckon our next bid will be the final one anyway.

They have said no to our bids twice and publicly they are making noises to say he is not available but that's the same as pretty much every transfer ever. We have obviously had some encouragement from one party as we seem to think a third bid isn't a waste of time.

Correct. Rarely do clubs make four bids for a player. I am glad people are coming around to my theory, which is backed by all of football history.

 (laughing with you btw)

Nah, it's not about 4th bid but the fact that we're already in August and our midfield is still in poor shape, we need to reinforce it sooner rather than later and spending another 3 weeks talking over and over again with Barcelona about a player they don't even want to sell seems pointless. Still we might do it and end up without a midfielder after all, it won't be much of a surprise when it happens for 3rd or 4th Summer in the row.

apparently the sticking point is that Barca want Fab to buy his own contract out, this way Arsenal wouldnt be entitled to a penny and Barca would get the full whack. However, Barca want 46m to buy out the contract, which is more than we value him at, meaning Fab would have to pick up the difference

Surely he isn't going to buy his contract out to leave his dream club now? Besides I can't believe Arsenal would agree on a clause that'd be so easily omittable.

I'd find it a bit mad that we wouldn't be willing to pay 46m for him. Given what players are going for lately, we just have to accept that's the going rate if you want the best and pay the feck up.

Isn't that what Javi Martinez had to do?

How much is the difference?

How is that easy? It'll be a costly affair to buy out a contract, one that would take serious weighing up to do.

46 million isn't that bad. He would be probably a sure a midfielder as you could get barring injury. I doubt Fabregas would pay a penny so if true, it's up to us.

£46m on top of £200k a week wages?

It's a hefty sum.

Getting the Fabregas who was last in the prem performing week in and week out, I could see us stretching to £50m for, but two years down the line with a massive drop in performance and importance for just £4m less plus the wage.. it might be more than we're willing to extend to.

I think his drop has been more to do with the system he is in rather than his actual ability. The English game suits him more imo, he is 26 so he is a t the right age. £46 million might be slightly overpriced but I think that maybe the going rate these days for the best players...

Listen guys, I don't buy into the muppet transfer season anymore, not since the days of us getting Berbatov.. However that being said, I am starting to have a good feeling with Fibreglass and my muppet is knocking on the door for the first time in a long time...

Crikey that's a lot of cash. You kind of get the feeling the new chief exec feels as though he needs to make a huge deal happen to send out a message.

Glad you told us to listen, don't know how I could have survived without your post.

I agree Carl, Moyes' having to answer questions about the attractiveness of United etc. It feels like Everybody is making moves bar us. Fabregas would be a great player AND a great signal of intent. Only Ronaldo could top it imo.

I don't see how it's a huge fee, to me it feels about right. Just look at what players are going for, the transfer market may be a bit mental at the moment but that shouldn't mean that we rest on our laurels and don't go beyond our usual £30m limit which is very outdated now.

I can't possibly imagine a scenario where the club entered into these transfer negotiations thinking they could get him for less than £40m.

Is it pounds or euro, I read that the evaluation is on euro which mean that is around 40m pounds.

Anyway, if we give Cesc those money does those money are subject to taxes or not? It should be but Bayern somehow found a way with Martinez.

I agree Cina, perhaps if Thiago was still there and they were looking to offload him, 30-35 mil would be the price. But he's not and they seem unwilling to sell, so £46 million is fair.

We could loan Cesc the money at 0%apr with him paying it back at £1 a year.

I think that was VAT which is usually fully reclaimable anyway.

Perhaps it's because we seldom actually buy ready made players from other top clubs which is why a few are raising their eyebrows at the fee. Also, he's been far from at the top of his game for the last few years so you wouldn't necessarily expect his price to have risen so considerably.

He's obviously interested in joining us otherwise this would have been put to bed weeks ago.

Stop with this myth.

I'm starting to wonder if all the stupidly low figures we see banded around for our players are actually leaked to the press by us.

Us: "Off the record I'm telling you that we'd like to shift Nani. If you could do us a favour and quietly drum up some interest with an article, we'll keep using you to leak information."

Journo: "This is good, how much are you looking to get for him?"

Us: "Well we don't want to mug ourselves, it's got to be a fair bit, are you sitting down?

Twelve Meeeeleeeeon Pounds."

Exceptional? That's an extreme overstatement. He's been a 7 out of 10 player at Barca.

I tend to agree, it seems hes sitting quietly not saying anything rather than catagorically saying "I'm not interested in leaving"

It's the standard move for a player to do this during interest from another club though isn't it? If Barca fend off all our advances and turn down a lot of money for him, it secures his position within the club and gives him a bit of power to make a few requests come contract negotiation time.
