Fabregas

Are there any press stories doing the rounds about whether we're likely to get any answers on this any time soon?

When did he actually leave Australia? Seems like it was ages ago.
On the same day bbc and ssn reported that we rejected a rooney bid involving Mata. 'twas a day full of caf excitement, cafites pronouncing this as "the best transfer window ever" and posting lineups with Mata and Fabregas in it.

Lawlz.

I remember those halcyon days. It's been all downhill since then...

Cesc Fabregas’ agent denies United negotiations according to Catalunya Radio

Cesc Fabregas’ agent has denied that Manchester United have had contact with the Fabregas camp about a potential move to Old Trafford. Darren Dein denied any contact with United as Fabregas’ representation make their first statement regarding a move according to Catalunya Radio.

“We have not spoken to United,” Dein reportedly told Barcelona executives.
Fabregas joined up with his Barcelona teammates today after his extended break following Spain’s participation in the Confederations Cup and passed his medical ahead of starting pre-season training under new manager Gerardo Martino.

Dein’s denial of contact with United is in contrast to reports that emerged in England this week and while Moyes confirmed that negotiations were ongoing, it seems that United may have only be dealing with Barcelona directly.

Fabregas is expected to make a public statement this week about his future at Barcelona but Dein’s denial of any contact whatsoever with United indicates that Barcelona are going to continue to stand firm with Fabregas and it would be a big surprise if the midfielder declared his intention to leave the club given how publicly they have stood in his corner.

Ah, God be with the days. T'was a simpler time.

What a load of bullshit.

Well Fabregas has been quoted as having a huge admiration for us and for the catering facilities at OT.

Also, I wouldn't give a feck about us being second choice. He's a top drawer professional footballer and if he were to come here for professional reasons he'd still be playing his best to try to force the Spanish issue this year and hopefully after a year at the club he'll have some bond to us built up.

Pizza gate???

Of course they are going to deny it, if we had been in contact before Barca gave permission, then it would be deemed as tapping. That said I am sure we have been in contact and have been given the go ahead to bid. Just the matter of what price Barca are willing to accept.

The natural assumption would be that if he's waiting for a vote of confidence, or an assurance of his importance, or something along those lines - he'd be interested in getting it as soon as possible. Especially with the press all over the story - and him not being the No1 fan favourite to begin with.

I don't know - I find it interesting, this "wanting reassurances" part. I'm just speculating wildly here, but I've always found the "original" story plausible: That first Pep and then Vilanova lost faith in him and more or less decided that he wasn't ideal in the Barca set-up. He then began thinking about moving elsewhere - because he got wise to what the management thought about his role and status at the club - and we made contact with him, having learned that he was "unsettled" and having had dealings with his agent before. It sounds plausible enough - perhaps a bit too plausible, but there you go.

Now, of course, there's the added element of a new manager. That could clearly change very much for an "unsettled" player. If the new bloke meets up with him and says he relies on him and will play him regularly in his favourite position - well, that's what he'll want to hear and our chances go out the window: He probably wants to stay, as such, but not if the club more or less declares openly that he isn't a trusted employee, as it were.

This. I can't believe the basis of that article is: "...Dein reported told Barcelona executives."

I'd go for that TBH. Sounds easily the most plausable explanation to the whole affair. Someone at United who knows him, possibly a Dutch colleague alerted the club to his dissatisfaction with all things Barca and we tried to prise him away. The new manager coming in has certainly thrown a spanner in the works.

I am probably reading to much into this but first Moyes and now Ferdinand have come out and said that our squad is good enough without any additions.

Now I know that they can't say we are in need without affecting the morale of the squad, but it sounds to me like we are planning on signing nobody.

Yeah but Moyes said he was 'sure' we would sign some players before the end of the window.
Of course we will. Although Moyes is happy with the squad but - as seen at Everton - does tend to leave his transfer business usually quite late. Could have something to do with the limited budget at Everton though.

Well he's said something at least.

‘After passing this morning’s medical, I’m all set and very excited about training with my team-mates!’

Nah. We'll certainly sign one or two players. Absolutely no fried doubt at all.

No, they just think that the initial reported offer of £26m was so low as to be pointless. Not that it matters - so what if we made a pointless bid? Nobody was killed. The only relevant bid is the final one.

I really have no idea why our first low bid has caused so much conversation. It is clear that a large number of children in here have never bargained for anything in their life. If we had come in at £40m straight off the bat we would end up paying £50m+.

If and when we do bid £40m, Barca will know that is our limit, if indeed it is our limit.

I cannot see the issue. We are now playing it cool and in my opinion correctly. In fact, I would say, we have played this whole transfer attempt perfectly and this is the only way you deal with such a politically sensitive club like Barca. Any idea of us bullying Barca with an initial big offer would only serve to wind up the Barca board and fans.

If Cesc is likely to move, those concerned will already be aware that it is happening, what the likely final fee will be and how the transfer will be staged.

We still haven't heard him reject us yet and this must add some legitimacy to the possibility of a transfer.

Do you think the very public nature of it was perfect?

How public was it though? Really, I mean a lot has been written about it and said about it but what have the club officially said? To the best of my knowledge DM has confirmed a few offers have been made and that Woody is working on it. Since then he's just said he doesn't know what is happening. Everything else has been 'club sources' which as far as I can tell are almost always made up press stories.

Do you think the very public nature of it was perfect?

I have no doubt that the public nature of the bids was to serve a purpose. We may never know that purpose, but I would caution anybody that thinks The Equaliser and Moyes are fools. They are obviously much better placed to make that call.

Do you think the very public nature of it was perfect?

I think it's impossible for us to say whether that was part of any strategy or not. Some things can't be contained - there are two parties, possibly three, in this negotiation.

People make too much of the public nature of it - and how embarrassing it will be for us if we don't land him. Big clubs go for big names and sometimes they get a no. It's not embarrassing at all, it's part of the business of transfers. Unless Fabregas and/or Barca come out and say something positively unheard of, all bystanders with half a brain will conclude that the deal fell through for commonplace reasons - not because we handled it amateurishly or because it was unthinkable for Fabregas to go to the backyard club that is Manchester United.

What do you expect them to say?

Even if they had spoken to us there's no way they'd publicly say they were seeing as he's likely to stay at Barca and it'd just piss their fans/club off.
