Fabregas

Do people actually think if we went in with a straight £40m offer it would be accepted? Then they be expecting £50-60m if they know our opening offer is that high.

I don't have a problem with how we've been bidding, do you not think this is how we negotiate with other players? The only difference is this time is that the bids have been made public so now all the negotiation experts have come out in full force on this one.
You got a snake in your boots ffs?

I do agree. It'd be ridiculous if we don't bid enough to actually get an official conversation with the player.

We can "pay £60m plus for a player"? Well, here is a 26 year old world class midfielder. Time to put the money where our mouth is.

My frustration has crept in now Pex because I actually think if the club takes the plunge the player is ours. I don't know what's holding them back, I mean who cares if we radically overpay? Every big club is overpaying but it just so happens that Cesc Fabregas could actually be our missing link. No one will care when he starts bossing games for United, providing Moyes with the proven class he knows we require in the engine room. Like you say if we want the world-class midfielder, and everyone knows we need him, then we will have to overpay. If we have to blow most of this seasons budget then so be it...just him is absolutely fine, we have surplus firepower everywhere else. He is the "right player" that has been referenced.

I just hope we keep bidding. If Fabregas comes out and says again he doesn't want to leave fair enough...no shame...but at least offer something that Barca might be tempted by. I suppose the club were looking at the price he went to the Nou Camp for as a guide, but he is worth another 10 million on top of that and probably more.

Has transfer muppetry driven us so over the edge that we can't even reference Toy Story without added aggression? We are a lost cause :(

It's ok mate, we don't have to take any of their crap. I've set my laser from stun, to kill.

This needs Olly.

Sid at the crane game with Woodward's head picking up one of those alien's with Fabregas' head.

Or do a Barcelona picking Arsenal players version. Either way, there be a lack of Toy Story crossed with Football related gifs.

When's Cesc's press conference then?

According to Talksport there was press conference and Victor Valdes said the usual 'I am sure Cesc will stay' stuff. Nothing from our friend Fabregas. A friend also just said that she was watching Skysport and that Rio said the squad was fine and that we don't need to sign anyone.

Cesc was probably busy having contract talks with us then, I reckon.

The one thing that strikes me about this whole bid, which makes it impossible to stop believing, is the fact that there's not been any public word at all from the player. Surely, if he didn't want this move, he'd just come out and say it since the negotiations has basically been carried out in public?

Yeah but Moyes said he was 'sure' we would sign some players before the end of the window.

I think though in line with what he said earlier in the season that if Barca want him he'll stay and so most likely if they're open to selling then he's open to a move. I don't think he's at the point where he's pushing for a move.

And he doesn't want to burn any bridges with potential suitors should a deal be struck. I imagine Cesc will be pretty pragmatic about all of this. If Barca want him and turn down big money offers then great he's their's and will be a part of their plans. If they accept an offer and give him the choice he'll probably weigh it up then and decide what's best for him and at that point a move probably would be. It all comes down to whether Barca accept an offer for him IMO.

Fabregas won't actively push for a move, but he's certainly not going to give a press conference saying he's definitely not moving. That'd be a no win for him

Good insight, Irwin.

I know it's pretty obvious stuff, or at least it seems that way but a lot of people in this thread seem to think he's so unobtainable. All I'm saying is that if Barca's resolve was to be tested I'd be surprised if the player did stay.

How many players stay on at their club once an offer has been accepted for them?

What are you talking about? I said it was good insight.

Yeah I agree, I think if we can strike a deal he'd come. In some ways its similar to Rooney, he's kept quiet about all the speculation and that for him is probably the best approach. If the deal doesn't happen and he decides to just get on with it he can come out and say he's committed, it will sound hollow to a lot of people, but it certainly wouldn't be as bad if he comes out and says he wants to go to Chelsea/move away himself and then it doesn't happen. Though there's still plenty of time for that I guess.

Without a hint of sarcasm?? :smirk:
Not at all.

Well, maybe a bit. Nah, I was just taking the piss because it was you. I agree with what you said, by the way. He's playing the game and won't comment until he knows where he stands with Barca. Which makes me wonder should we bother? If he has no real notion of coming, unless he isn't wanted at Barca, then should we be willing to accept being second choice?

If Gundogan is available I'd say feck Fabregas and get Gundogan. He's already professed a like for us and had said he'd like to play here some day.

Well Fabregas has been quoted as having a huge admiration for us and for the catering facilities at OT.

Also, I wouldn't give a feck about us being second choice. He's a top drawer professional footballer and if he were to come here for professional reasons he'd still be playing his best to try to force the Spanish issue this year and hopefully after a year at the club he'll have some bond to us built up.

I'd feck him off in a heartbeat to get Gundogan. feck Fabregas.

Barca lining up Gündogan as a replacement apparently
I'm not feeling anything in that rumour.

I'm not sure if any aspiring young midfielders who are already regarded as brilliant would risk leaving a set up where they play every game to play second fiddle at Barcelona when players are leaving (if Fab moves after Thiago) for not getting enough time in their favoured position.

Don't see Dortmund losing anyone major until next summer now. And if Gundogan is available at any price, I'm pretty sure more clubs than Barcelona would be sniffing around and almost every big club out there has changed their managers this summer so it's a fairly level playing field.

What do we make of this saga then? Game over? Still alive? Not a fecking clue...?

Somewhere between these two. It's not over till the club say it is but it's not the most likely of transfers. If I was to put a percentage chance of it happening now it would be in the single figures.
