It's ridiculous!

The argument that he's not left footed certainly cannot be used when Rafael is out, can it? How can you explain playing Büttner ahead of Fabio on the left if crossing ability and offensive contributions is what you seek when on the other hand you play Smalling/Jones on the right instead of Fabio. The paradox is baffling.

I understand him completely if he wants out, and I would never hold a grudge against him. Seems like a top lad with great talent, but what use is it when he doesn't get to play games.

When I've seen him play on the left, I always thought he played very well.

Exactly. Moyes has had some pretty strange decisions so early in his career with us.

I do think how his brother has developed clouds our judgement a bit... He's been linked with a move back to Brazil, with all due respect you'd have thought clubs in Europe would've been interested...

He's had one good run in the first team which culminated in playing the 2011 UCL final, and that was at right back.

Essentially that is his problem, he's only ever looked convincing in a position where he wasn't really intended to develop in.

It is rather telling that SAF before and Moyes now have been unwilling to give him too many games at leftback. He simply must not be impressive enough in this position.

I've always wonder we could have Rafael playing in first half and Fabio in the 2nd, without the substitution. This way we will have two identitical fresh player in either half.

Just throwing this out there, but with Rooney throwing his toys out of the pram last year and seemingly being rewarded with both playing time and the captaincy have several other players now decided that the only way to get game time is by putting outside pressure on Moyes by coming out with stuff like this. I'm surprised that both him and Hernandez have both come out with stuff like this only a few games into a season unless there was an ulterior motive.

Or just play him ahead of Valencia on the right, the fullback would have a mare. Double vision, remember the Arse game we won with 7 defenders on the pitch?

I think it's clear Moyes sees him as surplus to requirements, unfortunately. He could be our John O'Shea of the four wing roles at the very least.

At this rate we'll lose fabio, hernandez and kagawa very soon and be left with young valencia and buttner. Nice.

Yeah, posted that somewhere else. After everyone rumoured to be unhappy/unwanted/wanted elsewhere is off we can start:

-------------------Amos
Varela--Smalling----Jones--Buttner
----------Carrick------Cleverley
Valencia------Fellaini---------Young
----------------Welbeck

Should be enough to survive a relegation scrap.

Could be, and with the arse that is Rooney getting away with it, why shouldn't Fabio and Hernandez try the same. The only problem for them is that they don't come across as cnuts doing it; that may well be their downfall! Honestly, it's a travesty that Fabio isn't getting game time. If Moyes is intent on having the fullbacks as an attacking outlet, how can he defend playing Smalling and Jones ahead of Fabio? Considering our team, I would be interested to see Fabio in midfield, tbh. He's played there before and done quite well. He's very quick, technical, a good passer and good at linking up. He also has terrific work rate and a good shot on him. I'm not sure about his positioning.

If he leaves and Kagawa leaves... well... words fail me.

The twins should be our starting fullbacks. Evra isn't good enough to play superman all season long. In fact, Fabio could be a defensive improvement over Evra.

Not sure about upgrade, but I don't think he would be much worse either. His link-up play in attack is very good also, although one musn't understimate Evra's presence in attack either. In time, they should be our starting fullbacks. At the moment, it should be Evra on the left and Rafael on the right with Fabio as cover for both! Lahm and Irwin are two good evidences that you can play at the highest level on either side. Fabio behind Januzaj or Giggs shouldn't be a problem either concerning him being right footed.

This was quite possibly just a reply to a specific question - as in, would you go back to Fluminese. And of course, he may well miss home. I'd still expect European clubs wanting him.

I'm not sure it's got anything to do with Rooney. A new manager comes in and of course some players will be wondering if they've got a future. And rightly so. Kagawa a case in point. They may also get a certain vibe in training, that they're less wanted. Who knows. But one of SAF's key strengths was keeping a squad happy and of course, Moyes has no experience of dealing with a big talented squad. I do hope Hernandez, Fabio, Kagawa, Evans and Zaha start to come into the fold more, really don't want any of them to leave.

Can't say I'm surprised, but he's better than Buttner.

This.

Genuinely confused as to why Fabio hasn't had a proper chance. I still remember his debut in the Cup vs Spurs. I thought that day he was nailed on to take over at left back after Evra.

Na, Rooney could do what he did because of his importance to the team, neither of the other 2 are as important. It could see others like Vidic or Carrick pulling off a similar stunt to get better contracts but lets hope it doesnt.

Think its as simple as him being right footed tbh. Moyes wants a left footer who can cross and early at that. Dont think Buttner has much of a chance at LB for us either though fwiw, we'l be back in the market for a LB.

I still don't get this obsession with needing a left footed player at left back. He's grown up playing the position so he is clearly capable of making it his own if he's allowed the opportunity. You can't give him one match a month or every 2 months and then wonder why he's not progressing.

He can certainly do no worse Than buttner so give him a bloody chance Moyes.

Me neither especially when he can cross the ball well with his left foot anyway. Saw him do it a good few times in preseason. I also don't get why Jones/Smalling are used as cover at RB when Rafael is injured, when we have Fabio.
Really don't want him to go :(

Hopefully Denis Irwin can have a kind word to Moyes about right footed left-bakcs.

Really worried for his future at the club. I really think he could go on and become a regular for United once Evra leaves and if we don't sign Baines. But I won't hold it against him if he does move on for the reasons he has stated.

would be really disappointed if we let Fabio go over the likes of Buttner. Fabio is easily the better player.

I don't think it matters at all that Büttner is here or not. He's looking to play football. Moyes tried to bring in Baines and Coentrao this summer. On the right you've got his brother. He doesn't want to be second fiddle anymore which is quite understandable. I think it's inevitable that he leaves.

Fair point. However, if he was next in line after Evra and his brother, he would be probably be racking up 20+ appearances. That, in my opinion, would be enough for him to want to stay. When you have a player like Buttner getting games ahead of you and centre backs played out of position at full-back, those chances become a lot more limited when they should be increased.

Watching him play tonight, I can't help think that he really is a top class player. His pace, technique, intelligence and attacking skills are so good that he really should be playing in the starting XI of a great team. If Evra is indeed leaving, it's about time easing Fabio in. Crossing early doesn't work for United, but linking up outside the box then making those blistering runs into the box is what works, and that is something Fabio does expertly. I think people are watching other players, especially English like Baines and Shaw, thinking they would add to our team, but I think Fabio can already do that.

This season should be about easing Evra out (since it seems he wants to leave) and Fabio in.

By the looks of it, Moyes thinks Buttner is better player.

Fabio will not get his chance with us in the first team because he is not called Leighton fecking Baines, almost 30, and would cost us £25m

Sad times

Genuinely baffled about how Fabio's career at United has panned out. I remember his debut in the F.A. Cup against Spurs even now. I expected so much after that game and I still think, if given a chance, he'd be capable of turning into a brilliant left back for us.

It's about as baffling, if not more so, as Kagawa not being given opportunities. Fabio is one of those players who can play entertaining and effective football. Imo, Baines is more about the latter, and as I argued above, it doesn't seem like our play is suited to early crosses - RVP has never scored from more than two crosses in a season for instance. I think Fabio has more in his locker than Baines, and has more potential. Right now, Baines is certainly the better player, but as you said, give Fabio game time and he will prove his worth!

No surprise Fabio isn't getting many chances. He isn't better than Rafael and he isn't better than Evra. If he had a storming season for QPR then I would be more miffed but he wasn't even a regular for QPR. No surprise. Decent fullback but I think he's a bit overrated on here and don't think he'll make it as a regular here. Just don't think he's good enough.
Luke Shaw please.
