If the left isnt happening, does anyone think he should get a few games in the reserves as a central midfielder and see how he adapts to the role? He has plenty of the skills needed to be a success there, just isnt offensive enough to be one of our wingers imo. But he could help defend from midfield, has some talent on the ball and he makes very good runs to support the attack. He should easily be a good option as a player breaking from midfield, whether or not he could adapt to control midfield with passing and the rest of it

He used to play as a defensive midfielder of sorts when he was younger, I think - played in the middle for Brazil on youth level.

Not that it's immediately relevant, but hasn't Lahm featured as a DM for Bayern with some success recently?

Lahm would be the best striker in the world if he played there..

and the best goalkeeper in the world if he played there.

Sad to see him only on the bench. I think this probably signals the end of his time at United. If Buttner gets picked regularly ahead of him in these cup games, you can't help but feel bad for him.

Would have loved him to have a career at United but Moyes obviously doesn't see it.

Yeah. It is sad because he's clearly better than Buttner at left back.

Buttner's not a terrible player as some people make it seem. I'd say Fabio is the better player, but Buttner must be showing more in training.

Obviously Buttner isn't a terrible footballer, he plays at Manchester United, he can obviously kick a ball. And as you say he must be training well enough but surely Fabio deserves a chance because he has produced for us.

Like how Young was showing more in training than Januzaj over the first half a dozen fixtures maybe?

Yeah, he deserves a chance, and he'll get it I think. Obviously Buttner's in favor now, but that's no reason to say Fabio won't get his chance later in the season.

Different case entirely. Januzaj is breaking into the squad, Young is an established player who started and played in many games last season. The two left backs however, are young, and are relatively of the same age. They've both played first team games. Januzaj hadn't even played a game for the first team before this season (if I remember correctly).

Both SAF before and Moyes now have been reluctant to give Fabio a run at LB. SAF was willing to buy Buttner rather than use Fabio as a backup last season. Fabios best run in the team has come at right back.

Taking all of this into consideration, I'm not sure why he's still rated so.highly on the Caf. I suppose its the Kagawa syndrome.

Because of his performances at the end of 2011. He made a CL final lineup and was probably our second best player that night after Rooney.

Tbf though, it could also be that he knew he would still prefer to heavily use Evra as much as he could but wanted Fabio to also get lots of playing time so sent him on loan whilst bringing in someone in Buttner as an option if Evra couldn't play or needed a rest, which as expected turned out to not be very often.

I can't see how Fabio would have fallen out of Fergie's favor given when he did get a sustained run he earned the right to be first choice ahead of more experienced players. Injuries though of course have held his progression back.

I think it's a bit odd he hasn't started today, we're playing a very experienced CB partnership so could take the risk with him and I can't see how Moyes would have disliked his one appearance so far against CP where he looked good. I can get he might not like a right footer at left back, but suprised he hasn't gotten in today at rb but oh well.

I really don't get Buttner ahead of him...he's clearly a better footballer. I hope it's not because Buttner is left-footed, would be a rubbish reason.

Moyes is still learning about the squad, he knows now who are the better wingers. Hopefully the full-back position is next.

He's left footed. That can be the only reason.

Moyesie sign him up. Moyesie, Moyesie sign him up!

It's absolutely mental that Buttner plays ahead of him. Absolutely batshit mental. feck it, it's even mental Ashley Young plays on the wing ahead of him.

He looked distraught after scoring.

Waving goodbye?

It did cross my mind. If Moyes starts thinking he could be useful further up the field (would work well with Evra as it helps defensively too) then he'll stay

He better not be going anywhere. I can't understand why he doesn't get more games..

Really mind boggling as to why he isn't seen as second choice for both fullback positions when he is by far ahead of his competition. It's actually not even close which is why it's so shocking that Moyes doesn't rate him. Maybe he just thought Sir Alex didn't rate him because we sent him out on loan and saw Buttner here but I can't see that being true.

Using him properly as a winger simply won't happen. I just don't getbwhy he's not, at the very least, 2nd choice on the right.

He looked so sad that I just wanted to give him a hug. I really can't understand why he doesn't play more. This is a player who was first choice in the run in when we won the league and got to the champions league final, and played well in that final. Yet now he's not good enough to be back up to Rafael or play ahead of Buttner. Boggles the mind, it really does.

Buttner was brought in to allow Fabio to go on loan. It's just unlucky the loan didn't go exactly to plan.

He's out of contract in the summer, he's made two appearances, one as a sub for 10 minutes, despite the fact Rafael has been injured for a good chunk of it, I would be amazed if he signs a new contract.

Buttner has barely played either, besides he might end up playing a lot of our league and FA Cup games. We don't know whats going to happen in the future anyway. Still you are all overreacting.

Didn't know he was out of contract in the Summer :(
