So 9 games in and he's played once this season. Played well though rusty due to not playing much. Why does Moyes prefer Buttner at LB? And Jones at RB?

Your guess is as good as mine :(

Moyes just doesn't fancy him. Don't understand why though 'cos Buttner's a whole new level of shite

He must be carrying an injury. It's the only thing that makes any sense as he is a far better full-back than Jones or Buttner. I love Jones for what it's worth, I think he should get some chances at CB with Rio off-form. But Fabio should play RB ahead of him, even if we are playing the likes of Stoke.

Can't understand his lack of involvement. I genuinely concerned about his future, I feel he will be off, a lot of clubs would snap him up, especially on a free.

I can only imagine he prefers Butter at LB because he wants a left footer over there (esp as the winger is right footed) but I have no idea why he plays Jones and Smalling ahead of him at RB. Makes no sense.

It makes no sense at all not to play him. We were ready to ship Buttner out on loan this season (what happened with that anyway?) so you'd think Fabio would be ahead of him in the pecking order. I'd also prefer to see him in ahead of Jones.

Maybe he was just bread that way.

I can only imagine that's when Moyes thought we'd be getting Baines.

It is strange what's happened with him. He started a Champions League final for us two years ago and was one of the few who came out of that game with any credit, in my opinion. Since then, he's been sent on loan to QPR and now he can't get a game ahead of dross like Buttner and right back Jones.

He started a game a couple of weeks ago and was good. He gets dropped. Jones, Smalling and Buttner all play ahead of him. To me it's absolutely incredulous.

Should be first choice in the absence of both Rafael and Evra. No way should Buttner be starting ahead of him, and using CBs at RB should be an absolute last resort for when both twins plus Valencia are injured, there is just no logical need for it. Yesterday morning MUTV played the last 3 season reviews and Fabio was an important part and now he barely gets a look in.

Baffling why Moyes prefers Jones and Büttner to him.

Büttner was horrendous vs West Brom. Him and Rio should not get a look in the next months based on that.

Baffles me why Buttner is getting game time over Fabio, really doesn't make sense to me at all.

Moyes used him quite a bit on the tour and he played well - I'm surprised he's featured so little at the start of the campaign, particularly with Rafael having been injured.

Maybe Moyes wants to ensure we have someone left footed on the left flank which we probably take for granted with Evra

Is there a reason to think so? Especially considering that despite being a right footer, he makes better crosses with his left foot than Buttner.

Too much rotation of right back when Rafael is out. I get that Jones/Smalling need games but, Fabio should be our de facto backup when Rafael isn't playing - we lose so much with Jones / Smalling at right back going forward and neither provide more in terms of defensive ability compared to Fabio. His lack of involvement just is mind boggling to me.

Well, everything that has happened so far in terms of selection could be looked on as testing and tinkering. We don't know that Moyes regards Büttner as a better alternative than Fabio. He's trying them all, more or less. To some of us players X, Y and Z are so clearly shite that it seems baffling they even get the chance. I personally think it's fair enough that he tests and tinkers a bit, though. He started Ando against West Brom - doesn't mean he regards him as above Fellaini and Cleverley in the pecking order (I can practically guarantee that he doesn't).

Also, the left footed point mentioned by someone else is probably relevant. I think Moyes is looking to replace Evra with a left footer - and sooner rather than later. Hence the Baines interest, hence the reported Contreao interest. I don't know if I fully agree with him there - as I think Fabio could do very well on the left if given the chance. But I can see where Moyes is coming from too.

The twins should be our starting fullbacks. Simple as that. Evra should not be the robot he has been by playing 50 plus games.

Who cares about the left foot. Fabio is an excellent dribbler and can run with the ball extremely well. He can also link well with wingers.

Our technically proficient players should be getting the most games and the grafters should get cameos, early cup games and fill in for injured players.

Playing for the U21s tonight - which I think means he isn't part of the travelling squad to the Ukraine. :(

Not necessarily though. Or at least I hope he would be in the squad for Shaktar.

Nicky Butt is in the dugout tonight too, mind the U-19s are playing in Ukraine on Wednesday.

He should be fist choice cover for Evra and Rafael, I know he has had injury issues but it really is starting to feel like we are wasting a great talent.

He's so superior to Buttner it's ridiculous that he gets the nod ahead of Fabio. It leads me to think Moyes simply wants a left footer over there to offer a bit of natural width.

I'd take Fabio's unnatural crosses with his left than Buttner's and his clueless ones.

I know we all talk about him as a LB, but he's played a lot of games at RB for us, can't get a game ahead of one of the worst players I've seen in our first team, so maybe we don't even view him as a LB any more?

Perhaps they aren't the best of trainers? Obviously we can only speculate, but certain omissions I criticised SAF for (But he could get away with it as he has done this 20 times before)..... Don't feel Moyes handled Rooney well with his comments initially, and now leaving Fabio out, using Buttner too much and leaving out Zaha but playing AY is madness..

I personally don't rate him that highly as a left back, despite playing most of his football there i don't think he looks all that natural. People on here talk about his crossing being good but i have seen little evidence of that also. I like him much better at right back but even then i think his performances get a bit overrated. Would still prefer to see him than Smalling/Jones in that position but i can see why in some games we'd go for the more solid and experienced option.

Moyes is just weird. He played fabio and zaha often in preseason and now is unwilling to try them out ahewd of jones and yoing in the league.
And both performed very good there. Really can't understand Moyeslogic so far.
