Looked like he was being warmed up to come on today. Glimmer of hope maybe Moyes will see how much having a fb that can lend to the attack improves our play and he'll get the nod ahead of Smalling on Saturday. Even if he is being let go - now is the time to play him.

Rafael is out, Jones is out, not sure what's happening with Buttner, Evra looks like a player who could use a breather. If he doesn't get to start on Saturday he'll never get a chance.

I hope we keep Evans/Smalling as the CB's and play Fabio on the right.

He deserves his chance and whoever plays on the right wing will benefit immensely from an actual full back.

I think he's gone, either January or summer, and I say that with deep sadness.

What happens is that Moyes probably doesn't rate him as LB, and he doesn't see himself topping his twin brother at RB anytime soon, so he made up his mind to not renew his contract at some point earlier in the season (or even pre-season). And since he's not committed to us, Moyes doesn't see the point in starting or subbing him. That's pretty much that. Sad, but we'll move on.

I hope Fabio starts RB but as others have stated I think we'll bring in Vidic and push Smalling out to RB.

I don't know how he can not rate him when we haven't seen him properly. He deserves a chance. I think it's a contract issue.

If it's contract issues then I can't see any happy end here because not playing means Fabio has no reason to sign a new one anyway.

At this rate the twins should play the same position, then they could equal one healthy player.

He does lead training sessions every day or so doesn't he?

He might not be doing enough there to merit a chance.

Ashley Young, Darren Fletcher and Danny Welbeck have stepped in and taken possible places for Kagawa Hernandez and Anderson to start...possibly based on the same reasoning, application and effort on the training pitch.

Neither Da Silva twins have ever shown lack of desire, so hard to believe he is just being lazy in training. More logical that Moyes is fixated on a left footed leftback, so Buttner gets the nod. Jones/Smalling have done their defensive jobs on the right - so maybe continues to trust them. Very very hard to believe it comes down to training poorly.

I can't comment on training for obvious reasons, but he can't be worse than Buttner surely?

By far one of the most annoying things about this season. I'll be sad to see him leave but it seems the writing is on the wall. :(

Moyes isn't an idiot lads. Clearly Fabio is either (a) not as good as we're making him out to be (b) lazy trainer or something.

It seems like his best bet is to tie his brother up and put his shirt on. Madness, he'll never get a better chance than this.

Rafale should have just done his brother a favour and just given his kit to fabio instead of reporting his injury

Honestly I think a lot on here overrate Fabio. That's all I'm going to say. I wasn't too impressed with his loan spell last season too. I like him and think he's a decent player but that's about it.

Regardless of whether or not we overrate Fabio, he's in no way less deserved first team actions than fecking Buttner or starting games like this. Since he spends the whole season picking his nose from the bench, we can only wonder why.

Yeah. He looked good for us in that spell at the end of the 2010-11 season. We are probably getting too carried away with that brief spell. It will be interesting to see how he does when he gets his chance elsewhere.

All i'm saying is it's weird he's not even got a look in. Even previously out of form players such as Young, Valencia, Nani, Buttner etc got a chance somewhere down the line. It's unusual that he's just banished with no explanation.

Shouldn't Fabio get a chance before we dismiss him as another overrated talent?

On one hand we see Young, Valencia or even Buttner play time and again, and this guy doesn't even seem to break through!

As I said, maybe we've overrated him? Maybe he doesn't get chances because Buttner is a better trainer.

I don't know at all - but neither do you all. There's a reason he doesn't start, and of course it's understandable for us to be bemused by it but I haven't seen anything from him personally to warrant the hype he's receiving. Shown some flashes of talent.

Overrating Fabio? The boy started a CL final vs Barcelona at right back, I'm sure he could get a fecking game or two here, especially ahead of Buttner

He's far better then any other cover we have for either fullback position. We might overrate him but that cannot be disputed at all. He started a champions league final ffs!

It's obviously not footballing reasons. He's always looked competent at the least and did well in a cl final. Buttner looks a complete liability pretty consistently. Must be some contract or attitude related issue.

While I agree Fabio has shown he can play at the highest levels, starting CL finals isn't the ultimate trump card. Kewell and Traore both started and won a CL final.

We can only go off what we've seen and that's him performing here on every chance he got. Fergie would never have put him in the team in the first place if he was a bad trainer so it is a mystery.

This is what he said after he started the game against Palace in September:
“I definitely want to impress the new manager,” he said. “I did this on the training ground. That is why I played. I trained hard. I worked hard. He has seen me do that on the training ground, so he put me in the team. Hopefully, if I play well, I will stay there and I will fight with my brother for the position. That is what I have spoken about with him in the past. Now we are going to fight with him for the position. Why not? We have always fought over everything – PlayStation, anything. We fight with each other to win. This is no different. Now we are 23. We are mature. It is important, whether me or him plays, that we do well. I am confident in myself that I can play for Manchester United. But Manchester United is one of the biggest clubs in the world. They have fantastic players here.”
Since that game he's had injury time against Norwich in the LC where he scored a goal and we don't see him again. It's fecking baffling to say the least and it's not in his nature to be lazy in training so I don't believe that for a second.

He's the best cover we have for both fullback spots, that much is obvious.

Weren't some people saying he's not getting a look in because of contract issues? He reportedly wants the same wages as his brother and that's why he's being frozen out.

To be fair I'd pick Smalling over him for a match like today's myself. He hasn't featured for ages, starting him now would be a considerable gamble. The fact is the lad simply isn't in the picture for whatever reason.

Whatever else may be the case, it seems obvious that Moyes doesn't consider him a left back - so the constant Büttner comparisons are a bit pointless. He's a fourth/fifth choice RB at the moment, that's the reality. Whether he deserves to be - I don't know. It seems a bit odd. But as other have rightly said, Moyes isn't an idiot.
