Even if this is true, it doesn't fill me with confidence that we are up against City, PSG and Juve. Unless he has genuine love for United I can't see us beating any of those teams to him. When Di Marzio last reported we were in for him at that time it seemed like no one else was really in for him, reliable City sources said they didn't want him. When that was the case I was excited, if we have this much competition however I'm not really getting my hopes up that much

Feck sake, we're Manchester United, not Liverpool. We can beat all those teams to any signing if we really want the player.

The mighty Manchester United who finished 7th, 4th, 5th and 6th in the last four seasons :D

Put simply, Juve want him, he's a versatile player who was a right back and now plays as a midfielder, they have to stump up 45m euros to get him, and N'Zonzi is their other option as the Manchester clubs and PSG are also interested in Fabinho.

I see, thanks.

Has me a bit confused now as I read that Juve are allowed to buy only one more non EU player. Which looks to be Costa.

I think I read somewhere that Costa has a Portuguese passport.

This is one of those transfers which ticks along purely on the hope and prayers of us muppets. I really don't think we are interested for some bizarre reason. If I had to guess, it's because Monaco are much happier to sell Bakoyoko for £35m than let Fabinho go.

I think you're spot on there. Although it'd be brilliant if we did end up with him at some point, I'm not going to get drawn in for now.

Exactly. Usually these types of transfers don't happen when we aren't linked with a player forever. Maybe Martial is the last one where we weren't linked with someone for an eternity before signing. Fabinho would be great, but honestly anybody sort of DM signing would be most welcome. Carrick played a couple games well, and then United seemed to think they could count on him for an entire year. We need to find a true DM to slot in, as I think Mou wants to have a midfield 3 with a DM allowing Herrera and Pogba to roam. Both can be B2B guys who can be strong defensively as well as give something offensively. I don't know if Mou likes any of the academy products to fill in to this spot, but wouldn't seem likely to put one of them in there this year with such an important year upcoming. United cannot afford to be put in a position where we have to win either UCL/UEL again in order to qualify for next season. Mou gave his list to United hierarchy on who he wants, let's go out and get this done early and not be used as pawns in any bidding wars/contract negotiations/rumors

What's his passing like? Because we need someone that's exceptional at it, in that holding role, if we want to improve our team.

We have Pogba to dictate play from deep, and Herrera isn't half bad at it either. We just need someone who can roam in front of the defence, allowing Pogba to attack without being shackled with too many defensive responsibilities, and that's exactly what Fabinho can bring.

That's really not what we need. Pogba is extremely good at it when he has the freedom, and Herrera is good enough at it, also. We need a person that can break up play and allow enough freedom for Pogba and Herrera to roam and do what they do best.

Every successful top team that has a defensive midfielder in that mould also has extreme pace up front for the counter attack i.e Real Madrid, Monaco, Chelsea, we don't have that at the moment. Because of this we need a holding midfielder that controls the tempo of the game like Carrick or Scholes, and pushes the whole top half of the team up the pitch. Fabinho potentially makes a lot of sense but maybe Mourinho doesn't see him suitable for the way our team sets up at the moment.

We need someone who's either exceptional at passing or an exceptional defensive shield/ball winner (like Kante). I'm not convinced an all rounder is what we need which is why it kind of makes sense if Mou is in for Matic. We've known for a while that Mou prefers specialists so may not go for a RB turned DM who's not really a specialist in midfield.

Well that's not really true. He's quite expansive.

I don't think that really contradicts anything I just said.

He has a decent passing range for a player of his ilk - a holding midfielder, which is one of the reasons I think we should be looking at him. He's not a deeplying playmaker though and isn't looking to dictate the tempo of games.

Fabinho is, in my view anyway, a very good defensive shield. He's also decent in the air and much more dynamic than Matic. I too can understand the logic of going after Matic, but if Fabinho has been dismissed as an option, I don't think it will be because of his skillset.

Were we to actually sign Fabdinho,
how long between elation back to doom and gloom worries that we sign no one and get mugged in the process?

Over/under 1 day...nay..22 posts before that sets in

Lindelof news broke on friday, Ronaldo news broke on friday evening. I know this may break tomorrow too.

It's not true.

If journalists like Simon Stone were briefed last week that we're not in for him then we are not in for him.

Sadly this is almost certainly the case. It's just some Italian no-mark writing for an unreliable publication. Everything else suggests this is off.

There is/was a poster here last summer going on about how we didn't stand a chance against Madrid for Pogba :D
Okay. Well, I do think we stand a chance against almost anyone, but I think the reason for that is mostly our riches rather than "glory" right now. Our status has fallen compared to ~2008.

We have to be honest here and admit that we haven't got the pull we once had and even when players use us for a new contract ain't even working now #Ronaldo.

ffs, that is basically two come get me pleas from Fabinho.
