Fabinho

Dier is painfully average. I'd rather give one of the kids a chance than get him.
I can agree with you on him being average. But he is only 23 and I feel he improves. Plus, given the decreasing number of English players in our starting XI, Dier would be a better addition to the team, instead of Matic. Let's hope we just get Fabinho and forget about the rest of the mediocrity.

If Chelsea were willing to sell to us it tells you everything about why we shouldn't be interested.

I agree but knowing us and knowing Mourinho, I'd say this transfer is bound to happen.

Makes a ton more sense to get someone like Fabinho for £40m but I guess Mourinho would find it more of a gamble than to get the PL proven Matic even if he is already 28 and not as good as he used to be.

Either Fabinho is about to sign for someone else ("we never wanted him anyway") or we genuinely aren't interested... either way, that's it for this one. To the Matic thread!

It's obvious we're waiting till Chelsea tie up Bakayoko and then we get Matic. Don't know where these Fabinho rumours came from.
Matic, Pogba and Herrera would be a very dull midfield, strong but still dull. We absolutely need to sort out an attacking left back to come in if we're planning on playing a midfield that defensive.

The recent links to us were tenuous at best, as much as I would have liked them to be true. We shall see what the next few weeks bring, maybe it will turn out we really were in for him.

You'll be in there alone that's for sure.

I'm normally open to most transfers, but I really really hope we aren't seriously in for Matic. I would take Dier every day of the week over him.

It's still early. MEN isn't even that reliable anyway.

I still don't see us moving to any midfielder now till finishing Morata and Perisic deals in the next 2 weeks, then we'll see the midfield options available.

When the rest of the British press start saying Fabhinoff then we'll at least know there's been a briefing after a breakdown in transfer negotiations. When it's just one journalist saying this, it makes it less certain though MEN have mixed success (usually rubbish but 1st to call Schwein/ Schnei day).

I trust Di Marzio a thousand times more than I trust MEN.
What Di Marzio said, was said some time ago. Things may have changed, the MEN may know something. Can't see why they would go out on a limb like this if they hadn't spoke with someone connected to the club?

I'm hoping it's just lazy English journalism as they don't know any players outside of the PL, for starters things didn't end well with Jose and Matic at Chelsea. The other thing is he's too slow and lacking in mobility to pair with Pogba, we might as well just use Herrera in the role as spend £40M on Matic.

Click bait, increased website traffic, more readers, the usual. No real downside to printing rumors that end up being untrue, people tend to forget about most of them anyways.

look silly if we announced today though?

So this one looks off - never really looked on. I wonder what holding mids we are in the market for.

My own thoughts are that Mourinho will persist with 4-2-3-1 and will play herrera and pogba. Might sign competition for them, but won't spend 50m pounds on fabinho only to play him on the bench or replace Herrera who has been brilliant.

Leaves a lot of gun powder for a new number 10 if I am correct. Who is available really though.

Who is out there at the same level and age that Mourinho could have in his list?

Matic and Dier are much worse options and are likely to cost just as much if not more.

I call BS on that article. It ends with saying "Matic remains ahead of Fabinho in Mourinhos thinking". Ehm wait I thought Mourinho "ruled out a move for Fabinho". They don't know shit. MEN smh.

Yes, but he also tweeted a bit earlier that Morata and Fabinho, along with Perisic , are our main targets. No update on their end does not mean not going to happen at all, which is different from what MEN are reporting. Were MEN one of those who thought we were getting Michael Keane instead of Lindelof? Lindelof was reported more by the Portugese papers, who have at least got something right finally. Seems like our best sources after Jose took over are foreign media and journos, while the English ones seem to just guesstimate stories.

MEN are quite useless. Maybe Fabinho won't happen but Matic? Nah.

The day before Van Dijk to Liverpool broke:

So 5 weeks ago we contacted with interest in Fabinho, suddenly now we aren't interested? B.S

Either Monaco have decided he isn't for sale, or he doesn't want to join us.

I think once his wedding/holiday is finished we will see some movement, but I can't see why all these Monaco/City ITK suddenly piped up and said he's favourite to sign for us, suddenly it's gone quiet? it's very weird.

FabINho? FabinhOFF?

I wish there were more credible rumours about our possible transfer dealings to get our muppet juices flowing. :( This hush-hush stuff is so boring.

James Robson is a Man City correspondent. He's never been reliable regarding City never mind United.

But hush-hush is the PROPER way to conduct a transfer - both selling and buying clubs, as well as the player involved, will not want to be too open about transfers when they could break down at any time. Just look at what happened to the Griezmann saga and what he has to say and do now to get back onside with the Atleti fans.

Yes, does seem more like a shot in the dark. If Fabinho is not with us come September, they can point back at their tweets and say:"Look we were right!". If Fabinho does join, they can just blame their 'sources'. Seems like anyone can be an English sports journo these days.

There have been plenty of rumours centering on the same players for weeks now. It looks like the 4 targets are: Lindelof, Matic/Dier, Perisic, Morata/Belotti.
