Fabinho

We let Fabinho go to PSG, Chelsea fail to sign Bakayoko and we fail to land Matic.
What a clusterfeck that would be.
We then try for whoever is on 'the list' after Matic, Dier, and Fabinho.

Let's just hope we're working on some other midfield target that the journos are clueless about. Preferably of the Carrick mould.

You should send a poison pen letter to Woody with that advice, it's brilliant.
Picking Matic over Fabinho would be demanding immediate success as Fabinho is younger but Matic is proven PL winner.

If Mourinho cant win PL next season then he should leave as he is aiming to win it with experienced player and not thinking of club's future.

Maybe he is thinking about the clubs future though. Have you given much thought what happens to TFM if we buy Fabinho? Maybe José feels TFM has what it takes? Just a thought.

I've not seen huge amounts of Fabinho. Seen his obligatory youtube vids. Can someone explain to me why so many people on the caf are convinced we're missing out on something big?

I was really disappointed we ended up not getting Toni Kroos a few years ago. But you could tell within a few mins of watching him in any live game that he was a class act. Exceptional passing ability and the ability to dictate the tempo of a game is what stood out.

When I see Fabinho (and again I haven't seen a great deal) I 'just' see a good athlete making some nice interceptions and keeping his passing very simple. There's nothing to get very excited about is there? What am I not seeing? He seems like a solid all rounder rather than anything exceptional, almost like a good squad player. Why the doom and gloom around not getting him?

I was part of the 'done dealio' brigade a week ago mainly because of his own comments rather than anything di Marzio wrote but I've never been that excited about him as a player.

The future is now. He should buy the players he thinks he needs to get it done.

He's not supposed to be an exciting player. He's a water carrier but they're essential for a team. Just like Kante etc.

He will give pogba and Herrera the ability to get forward and not be scared to be caught short behind.

... The galactico policy is the path Ed and the Glazers have chosen to lead us back to the top. It's the quickest, safest and easiest route for a club of our riches to adopt. ...

The quickest? United are about to enter the 5th season since Fergie retired. In the intervening period you've managed to finish 4th just once - and that has been your highest place finish.

The safest? See above, and also compare to what is IMO the safer route of building for the long term instead of a succession of short-term big name signings and continual squad churn.

The easiest? Well, yes, in the sense that it's easy to write big cheques when you have lots of money.

Thanks for pointing out that United are a club in transition and our recent efforts in the league these past few years have been less than fruitfall. Now tell us something we don't already know.

At least you didn't mention the stadium!

OK fair enough but players like these come along quite frequently right? I mean someone with a bit of basic positional awareness and athleticism should suffice. I know I'm being very simple here but I just rate passing ability and close control of the ball as something that's a lot harder to do, a la Busquets/ Carrick etc. I don't see anything exceptional about someone like Casemiro for example (assuming he's that type of player).

Don't get me wrong it seems the collective wisdom of the caf is that he'd be very good for us but it's not in the same ball park as missing out on Ronaldinho or Kroos or Thiago etc. We should be able to get around this by signing someone else and not have it devastate our season.

I'm sure you have a lot of experience to share with that route, how do you know you ARE building for the future under the correct manager? I'm more than sure that United would be in a far worse position if Moyes or LVG were allowed to continue.

Didn't he say in that article that we've bid, nothing about it being done?
It will be interesting to see how much PSG pay for him. Wonder if it will be more than 50m?

This seems like it will be put to bed in the next few days, if we miss out on Fabinho and can't get Nainggolan looks like we are stuck buying a 29 year old lumbering turd or sticking with the 29 year old lumbering turd we already have.

Yes, I agree, you'd be in a worse position (not sure about far worse tho').

In terms of 'how do you know' that you're building for the future, I'd say that the age of new players signed is one key indicator, as is the number of academy/young players being brought through into the senior squad or given decent amounts of playing time, along with a gradual reduction in squad churn. There are additional indicators of course.

Can't seem to lose my sleep over Fabinho. Good if we have him. Ok if we don't. Much more interested in the striker and winger situation.

Try explaining to Chevrolet, the guys who recently sponsored our club to the sum of $550m, that the galactico policy is no longer in effect, or Nike before them who shelled out a similar amount. These guys didn't hand over that money so we could improve our youth setup, or go bargain hunting in the lower leagues for a potential target, they expect the shirt they have their name printed on to also contain that of a superstar. A brand name suitable for marketing purposes, one that will draw attention to their logo.

You don't seem to understand Glaston, United and Spurs are two completely seperate entities. Run in entirely different ways. Your argument will fall on deaf ears mate.

Interesting, but I just don't think that's the way the top clubs go about their business. When Barca and Real have bad seasons, they buy their way out of trouble; United are just using the best formula.

Good point.
I've been saying that TFM would be the perfect DM, for a while, hope I'm right, and that mourinho sees that too.

The lad got great physique and pace.

He can be good but he's a long way off being ready for first team football. Need to send him on loan and see if he can hack it.

We dont HAVE to send him on loan to see if he can make it. Rashford wasnt sent on loan. Give him a few chances/consistent run in the first team to see how he copes with the pressure. We all know he has the potential but can he convert it onto the pitch? We can only find out if he given the chance.

So basically how it works is that no one actually knows how good Fabinho is. People are busy, we have jobs and university and stuff so we don't have time to watch games other than United ones let alone start following a whole other league. So almost no one has watched Fabinho play apart from a handful of CL games where they probably weren't paying that much attention to his performance. So the way this hype happens is that people have to acquire knowledge by proxy, so instead of gaining first hand knowledge they get their knowledge of players second hand. So if say tomorrow we become interested in Bakayoko, people aren't going to go watch Monaco games back and analyse his performances, they'll just read what everyone else is saying about him and take that as their own opinion, similar to like politics and other stuff in life where it's difficult to acquire knowledge yourself so you read others opinions who you respect/rate and take those same opinions.

So basically the Fabinho hype was one big self fulfilling prophecy where people here and other places online started saying he's really good so everyone started believing it and the hype got driven through the roof. He may very well be good but the truth is 99% of people who say he's good won't have watched him nearly enough to know.

Also YouTube videos are bad for a player like Fabinho because his biggest effect is how he allows the rest of the team to perform. He's not flashy he won't be pulling off great passes or scoring loads of goals but his positioning and breaking up of play will allow the rest of the team to flourish so that's how you judge a guy like him. Similar to Carrick, watching videos he wouldn't seem that special bar a few nice passes but the influence he has on the team is huge.

Fabinho's better than Herrera going forward, and so is Matic.

Or you can just talk for yourself?

Just wishful thinking, he's probably going to be loaned.

DM is one of the most important positions on the pitch, one loose pass and the ball ends up in the wrong net. It requires great passing technique and a certain level of composure, which currently TFM dosen't possess.

We then try for whoever is on 'the list' after Matic, Dier, and Fabinho.

N'Zonzi is available for £35m (reported to be his release clause). He's better on the ball and in the air than any of the aforementioned targets, plus knows the Premier League and is in his peak years for the next couple of seasons. Juve are supposed to be interested.

Even so Mourinho used Tuanzebe there instead of Fosu-Mensah in the last league game.

Whenever he has been given the chance this season he looks very nervous and can be very complacent, when you're playing with a lone DM it becomes the most important role in the team, he doesn't have the discipline yet to play as DM.
