Genuinely think that if we'd have been interested in him, then we'd have got him previous season. Rightly or wrongly, he doesn't seem to interest us much.

Lets be honest, makes more sense for Liverpool if United is going to sign Fred.
He doesn't really fit us that well. Too slow to be our starting right back in my opinion and we've got Matic at DM so he wouldn't get ahead of him. Sidibe is a much better fit, he's the type of full back we need.
Liverpool will be stronger again next season. Fabinho and Keita are very good signings. We need to be ready for them and City.
We would have got him if we wanted last season. Former player of Mourinho and Fabinho was open to the move.

If he's a proper DM, then this signing made no sense for United. Would've been another body. Matic has been our most consistent and top3 player this season and should be in his prime for next two-three years atleast.

Nah. Monaco were only selling a fixed number of players. Fabinho and Lemar were not for sale due to selling Bakayoko, Bernardo, Mendy, Mbappe (loaned), Germain etc.

Good buy for them, ideal upgrade over Henderson at the base of the midfield.
He could have been a useful buy for us, especially if we are not going to sign a RB.
But if we are signing a specialist RB, we don't really need him as Herrera and McTominay can cover for Matic.

Doing the numbers: Fellaini and Carrick out, Fred in (Fabinho not coming) means there is one more midfield position left to fill in. I wonder who it could be?

He hasn't been available which was a problem because he was promised the opposite. And PSG tried their best to unsettle him.

That is not what I'm saying. Fabinho and Lemar weren't for sale to any club last summer as Monaco had already sold 5 or so other players and said they weren't for sale that window.
That tends to happen when you offer whatever deal the selling club want.
Whereas we drag it out for days/weeks.. it’s bloody aggravating as feck.
From what I've seen of Keita, he's a lot more attacking than that and has a lot of quality going forward (as well as having a brilliant engine). A midfield with those two and AN-Other suddenly looks a lot more daunting, especially if they add a new keeper and more depth in attack.

Herrera is no way near as good as Fabinho whenever I've seen him. If we want to win more games we need to look better than Ander Herrera in driving the ball forward and finding players. Yes, Fabinho does not play to the same strengths, but in games where Matic is unavailable or Pogba is dogshite you at least have the better options (Fabinho and Matic would both make more cutting passes than Herrera does, and Fred would occupy Pogba's role if Pogba was on poor form).
And then the RB option, which I've read somewhere is his preferred role although I'm unsure to what extent this is true.
And where did you read he is an average RB? French posters have been saying he's a very good midfielder but his RB performances prior to that were even better. It was just working for the team better to have him in midfield because Monaco had Sidibe.
