Good argument except that Matic and Fabinho are actually different in many ways even though they occupy the same section of the midfield. Also, the need for tactical flexibility can make it a huge advantage to have both on the pitch at times. We should remember that one of Fabinho's outstanding traits is his turn of pace (and pace). He is also a good passer of the ball and likes to bomb forward. Something he picked up as an adventorous right back. Let's also not forget Matic's evolution as a midfielder. He does not only have the ability to break up play but with a solid partner, he can play a DLP role well.

I think that in certain types of games, a Matic-Fabinho combo can provide solidity, stability and complete attacking freedom for Pogba. A Fabinho can be a substitute for Matic, a partner to him in some games and an option for right back.

I wouldn't consider Fabinho particularly quick, and for me both him and Matic are decent passers without being top class playmakers, they are Fletcher's, not Carricks and IMO we need the latter in the mix in some form. I just feel that we'll run into the exact same problems as if we used Herrera or Fellaini in the role, do a job options but lacking either ball carrying or creative qualities to aid Pogba in supplying the attack.

If Fabinho comes in he'd prevent the high quality CM we need also coming in as neither will accept being bench players, that's why I'd avoid him as he's not going to be just added into the Herrera/Fellaini role as well as us buying a top class playmaker.

Oh, Fabinho is quick for a DM and his turn of pace is impressive when you compare him to Matic, Carrick or Fellaini.
I agree with you about prioritizing creativity in the middle though. I wouldn't classify Fabinho as very creative.
But my thinking is that we will be needing two new midfielders considering the fact that we never really replaced Bastian(DM) and Morgan (DM); Carrick (DM) and Fellaini (ocassional DM) will probably be leaving and we just sold Miki and replaced him with a forward. The only new addition to our middle is Scott and he's a newbie who is being slowly blooded. So we do need serious reinforcements in the middle. In an ideal world, I would get a steely, ball playing DM and a creative AM.

I agree, we definitely need two CM's added this summer with those exact skillsets, we need to create midfield depth if we are going to start using a 3 man midfield as our regular formation. Matic has looked legless for weeks now so he needs cover/competition, while the 3rd man needs to be a creative compliment to Pogba who can play a bit deeper and support the DM more.

We need a 6 and an 8. Fabinho could be perfect as he can play as a 6, a right-back and as an 8 in big games where we need to sit back more.

Add SMS, Thiago or another world-class 8 and have a perfect balance to give freedom to Pogba. That way the need for a RW would not be as great having MLS up front. Still think we should go for someone like Bailey too.

Fabinho(£40m), SMS(£60m), Bailey(£40m) and Sessegnon(£40m) would constitute a perfect Summer for me. We could probably get £65m from Blind, Darmian, Herrera and Mata, which brings us to a net spend of £115m.

IN/OUT
Fabinho (Herrera)
SMS (Carrick)
Sessegnon (Blind)
Bailey (Mata)
TFM (Darmian)
Pereira (Fellaini)
Gomes (Ibrahimovic)

You are spot on about Matic. Apart from his brilliant display in the last match, he has indeed been very leggy and Pogba needs a creative compliment.

Yes, we really need to play the 4-3-3 formation much more but with the right set of players, I am a big fan of 4-2-3-1. Teams like Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Dortmund/Liverpool under Klopp, have used it to good effect at times. I think the 4-2-3-1 formation helps teams to cover more of the pitch, achieve stability and allow for more attacking options because it offers the opportunity to use four forwards if you so wish. The primary problem we have had with 4-2-3-1 is a shortage of genuine ball carriers in the defensive half of our pitch. This is why we don't retain possession well enough, we lose the midfield easily, we fail to feed the forwards with enough chances and we hardly ever get the best out of Pogba as he has to play one of the '2'.

Always found it funny that Bakayoko ended up being the one that ended up at a big club while Fabinho was left at Monaco.

PSG tried to sign Fabinho and there were lot of good journalists reporting it. Maybe Monaco didn't want to lose anyone after selling so many players. Same with Lemar.

Yes but he ended up being there another season especially when his stock is unlikely to be as high as it was last summer this time around. Gotta suck.

If we sign him, it will be for right back. He has always said, he wants to play there.

Consider that in Monaco's brilliant league winning season, Fabinho contributed 12 goals to the cause.
That's a very healthy return from a defensive player.
9 of those were penalties.

Fabinho beside Matic with Pogba upfront will be a great midfield. I don't think he'll cost much as well, 40-50m or something like that I believe.

However there's nothing suggesting we're linked to him now.

Fabinho Matic Pogba midfield will be way too defensive. But I would buy him, he has said his dream is to play for United, he can cover RB & DM, two positions we have no cover for and if he progresses well, he could be our long term DM.

He's good in the air, good tackler, good passer and a good crosser. Also he won't cost much, 40 or there abouts, same as Bakayoko. But if we are planning on buying specialist RB & DM, then he would be an unnecessary buy because he's good in those positions but not great or top class. He's a bit like blind, can play in multiple positions at a good level but not top class in any position.
Would rather prefer a DLP and a young RB

If Blind had pace, height and strength, I'd agree.

40mil for Bakayoko who maybe hard to sell this summer. Good deal that. Fabinho may yield less fee now, but he is helping them fighting for CL place. If it becomes a success, arguably it would offset that loss fee while maintaining Monaco as a good attraction for young players. It both works better for short and long term, than keeping Bakayoko who is no help and hard to sell.

His market value is rather around 55-60 millions

The strange thing about that to me is that Mourinho knows Matic has stamina issues but hasn't rested him very often, I am guessing he was expecting to be able to use Carrick more this season so he could rest him, but I'd have thought he'd use Herrera as a makeshift in there now and then.

I like the control in possession you get with 4-3-3 and I think it can be just as attacking if you stock it with the right kind of personnel, it's very dependent on the type of player you use in that second #8 you choose between your DM and AM, like Barca using Xavi and Iniesta or City using De Bruyne and Silva are just as offensive as the 4 forwards system I feel.

Matic can comfortably operate as a DLP. He used to occupy that role before Mourinho signed him to cover Fabregas and now Pogba. Having a Fabinho signed could free him up to be more creative and attack oriented

Has to disagree with this. How many times we have seen Matic struggled to pass the ball? The guy isn't DLP, he's more of a destroyer not playmaker. Signing Fabinho might not be a good idea, we need someone who is like Pirlo or Carrick, add composure in midfield and someone who can dictate the tempo & knows how to read the game well without taking too many touches like Pogba.

Fabinho is type of defensive midfielder and if we want someone who is more type of defensive then we already have one Herrera.

His wife just signed for their female team last week. Dont know if it means something but doesnt look someone who is planning to leave the club.

Yeah the problem is that we keep asking Pogba to be one of those DM's :(
Very true, Herrera and Matic need to be in the engine room. Let Pogs have more licence.

Do you mean Herrera and Matic? As Herrera's more box-to-box.
Will you stop, we ain't had a true box to box midfielder since Keane left. Herrera is a 6 outa 10 at everything and not an 8 out of 10 at anything. A 25-year-old Carrick would be ideal but Herrera will do for now and he is a little more adventurous than Matic so with a few games they could gel very well. I think the way our fullbacks push on its absolutely ideal for us in what would basically be an inverted 442 in attack and two banks of 4 and 3 when having to tuck in.
The 3 lads up top ensures they can't push on too much! I think it just suits us to play this way and we have the players to match it perfectly.

Not so sure Herrera will be here after the summer, so we do need someone! Fabinho could be good along side Matic. Unlike City right now, we have to put in much more trench work to earn the right to be feared where we can play with a mid 2 with only one holding Midfielder. But i do wonder, do we over crowd the attack denying ourselves space in which to play.

I was talking about it from Fabinho's perspective. The type of clubs he'd attract and the financial package he could secure.

Pretty sure that De Gea won't be there in the starting line up should this scenario happen because all of his Spanish mates being shipped out.

I was under the impression that his performances has dropped a level this season?

At the start of the season apparently. He seems to be in a better shape these days.

Monaco always sells its players at a high price and he is a key player for many reasons:

- as a defensive midfielder, he's at the heart of the game
- he makes the other players better I think, which contributes to the other players' value increase

The team lost M'bappé, Bernado Silva, Mendy, Bakayoko. Lemar generally injured. So, the context is more challenging.

.
Matic has zero in common with a destroyer. Zero. He also doesn't struggle to pass the ball in any shape or for.
You dont have a pass success % rate in the high 80s and be classed as struggling to pass the ball.

% rate of passing means nothing if you play safe & simple passes. Cleverley also has % rate in the high 80s with us. People know Smalling isn't good with his passing and not ball playing centre back but he also has high 80s % with us. Let's think, why did we struggle to control the tempo of our midfield with Matic & Herrera partnership?

How is Matic has zero in common with a destroyer? His biggest asset is his defending and breaking up play. He is clarified as a defensive midfielder for a reason. You want to see example of true DLP? Have a look Busquest, Carrick and Alonso.

Always found it funny that Bakayoko ended up being the one that ended up at a big club while Fabinho was left at Monaco.

Well, Bakayoko was on the last year of his contract and had 6 good months in three years, so Monaco were glad to ship him off for more than they could have dreamed. Fabinho on the other hand has a contract until 2020, if I'm not mistaken, and he is better and more valuable for Monaco.

Matic struggles to create, not to pass the ball as a whole. That's something he's very good at.

He is nothing like your prototypical destroyer whatsoever.

Something he's very good at?

So he's anywhere near deeplying playmaker like Carrick, Alonso & Busquest then?

Did I say that?

Not sure why are you asking the question when pretty sure I was the one who asking you a question here since you called his passing the ball as a whole is very good.

OP said he's DLP. And I shouted some name of true standard DLP is Carrick, Busquest & Alonso. Are you denying that he's DLP?

His passing is very good. So is Ederson's and Mats Hummels, doesn't make them deep-lying playmakers. I would still however say he's closer to that than a prototypical 'destroyer'.

Off topic but, Matic could have been a DLP, he has the technical abilities for the role but at some point between Benfica and Chelsea he lost the aggressive passing style that is required.

Edit: Ideally, I think that Matic is a defensive box to box more than a destroyer or DLP, he has the qualities of both roles but the mentality of none.

First of all, good you save my time more. @Red Indian Chief Torn Rubber

Second, let's get back to the discussion.

Hmm sorry mate. You are comparing Midfielder's passing with a keeper & centre back passing ability. Deeplying playmaker is a midfielder. There is defender is called as a ball playing centre back.

 You are funny though. He's not DLP but he's not destroyer. Matic plays in a no 6 role, a no 6 who is called to be very good with his passing should be in the category of DLP. If he's not DLP and not destroyer. What is he? Just an average midfielder of no 6? Matic's best asset is his defending & breaking up play not his passing, he's closer to be called as 'destroyer' more than as a DLP.
