F1 2021 Season

Gutted to have missed this. Seems like an absolutely mental race.

Everything else aside, how the feck does Mazepin pit six times and finish ahead of Hamilton?

Proper season this one. Will be lots of pushing and the consequence will be mistakes and failures like today.

Early in the race red bull told Max or Perez to take care of one of the tyres. Forget which driver and tyre. I'd love to see what % Max's tyres were at failure.

Hamilton mentioned he thought he turned off magic mode and the pitwall said he did but it failed? Didn't quite catch it. Anyone?

Thought he said he accidentally hit the button on the restart which changed the brake balance.

He was able to unlap himself as a result of the safety car/red flag and so was with the pack when Hamilton went off at turn 1.

Was Verstappen and one of the rear tyres. Given Perez's tyres were fresher, he's better at managing them and he was at 10% on the graphic before Verstappen's let go, I'm guessing Verstappen's were in the same situation. Hamilton's rears were at 20% at the same point so he'd managed to keep a bit more in them.

With Hamilton, he'd turned it off and then accidently turned it back on when changing gear and that cooked the brakes. Watching the onboard you can see that at the restart he got away like a rocket but actually seemed to try and brake quite early and cautiously despite being able to fight for P1 as a result of his start, he just had no braking ability in the car. Amazing how such a small error on the steering wheel can undo all the effort he and Mercedes had put into rescuing this weekend.

Oh wow. I really wish they'd do more audio and add subtitles since they are on delay. Adds a lot to it.

Lewis has said he turned the brakes off on the steering wheel when perez moved over to cover him and he didnt realise he had done it. Lucky boy that could have been one hell of a crash if it had been at somewhere like socchi or monza.

Yeah, they occasionally do a transcript as well as the audio and I enjoy that. Shame they don't do it more cos we do miss out on so much. I've really enjoyed the new team/race director radio, wasn't sure at first but getting to hear the Red Bull guy calling for the red flag so everyone could change tyres was especially great, partly so we could find out it was for that and not just the race director trying to inject some drama but also for the insight of knowing that the failure seemingly came out of nowhere like Silverstone last year.

That said, if they played a lot more driver radio, this thread would become even more unreadable due to all the drivers being accused of "whining" so swings and roundabouts.

Agreed!

It does seem pretty crazy that you can nudge a switch that turns the brakes off on a car that does over 200mph.

I missed the race and it sounds like it was brilliant.

Surely you can't turn the brakes off? It's rather the auromatic brake fluid pressure control innit ?

It just moved the brake bias to the front of the car to 75%, so essentially locked up gloriously.

That makes more sense. AKA bottling it:lol:

So much salt in this thread today.. Pretty likely it will only get worse as the season goes along as well unfortunately.
Grim isn’t it. Just fan boys on both sides with zero objectivity.

Good race. Pleased for the podium.

The switch is designed for safety car restarts as an easy way to put heat into the tyres, the speed they're going at during that period doesn't need a completely balanced set up on brake bias. However he'll be ruing that something so simple had an impact on a race win for him.

I guess I don't have a clue what half the buttons in the cockpit do tbh.

Just an odd one today- can't remember that happening before.

Yes, this is the most pressure a 7 time world championship winner will have ever had. He finally "bottles it" due to the pressure of Baku.
Max and Lewis battling for the 'Baku bottler' nickname on the caf.

Bottas had an embarrassing race. Didn't even look like he was trying that hard.

Absolutely no confidence with the car set up, you can tell by how early he's off the throttle and braking for the apex.
He was also on old tyres and think most of the cars he was racing in that clip had pitted towards the end of that safety car stint. Was a dreadful weekend for him in general though.

Bottas and wheel to wheel racing just don't go together. Nothing about car set up, he isn't a racer.

Why didn't they change tyres before the final 2 lap dash? I thought they could under red flag conditions or had they used all available sets?

I don't see Bottas going to Williams if his seat is taken off him, reckon he will go to another form of motorsport

I'm wondering whether they will give Bottas a new Chassis. This has happen in the past before where a driver and team cannot workout what is wrong with one car out of the pair. A new Chassis is built (at a cost of something like £750,000) and suddenly the struggling driver isnt struggling anymore.

Also if as i expect Lewis signs on for another 2 years, i think he may request/demand/ask that Bottas remain in the team. After all he has Bottas under control and the relationship in the garage is much better than it was with Rosberg. A young hungry, with a point to prove Russell isnt what Lewis needs for next two seasons while he fights Max and whoever else for WDC's. A solid no2 like Bottas is what he will want beside him.
