F1 2021 Season

I think him and Hamilton are quite fun together and their relationship since Vettel stopped winning all the time is better. I think Hamilton is bad loser and Vettel is a bad winner.

Verstappen is an all round cnut, I’m dreading him winning all the time when Hamilton retires.

I’ve softened a bit towards Verstappen. Used to be a grade A cock, but think he’s matured a little recently. He’s still a smug git, but I don’t think he’s as bad as he used to be.

He does have millions of insufferable fans though. We were absolutely surrounded by them at Monza a couple of years back and they didn’t give a feck about the race at all once he had a first lap tangle and ripped his tyre off.

To be a winner, you have to detest loosing.
More than anyone I have watched in F1, Lewis Hamilton is a true winner, as well as being the best driver I have seen.
You don't get to a a seven times WC by not hating loosing.
I cant disagree with any of that.
Lewis is one of those that you either like or dislike, I like him but he has his faults like everybody.

Vettel & Hamilton seem to be the ones really pushing the FIA on its anti-racism message which has really impressed me and it seems to have brought him and Hamilton a lot closer together. It's noticeable how unified they seem to be on that message and how outspoken he is. That's definitely had a positive impact on how I perceive him as he comes across as a thoughtful good guy now.

The fact he's not winning all the time definitely helps as well as he came across as a pretty poor winner sometimes in personality.

I think most have agreed he was lucky? what's the issue.

People can still support him and say he did a good job.

Of course he did a fantastic job. I'm not a Hamilton fan but appreciate his skill. Just read the whole thread and you will know what I'm talking about re: Hamilton fans.

My favorite is Kimi so I have no bones to pick right now at the top of F1

Interesting to read that if Leclerc overtook Verstappen when he span off at the rolling restart, he would have to had started from the pitlane, or received a 30 second penalty.

Not surprised Leclerc didn't go for it as the rules are very complex, but Max is a lucky boy that he didn't!

Who would have had to start in the pitlane/had a penalty? And where did you read that?

My understanding is that Leclerc probably would have been fine overtaking Verstappen, but Leclerc wasn't 100% all Verstappen's wheels had crossed the line so he held back.

I'm saying Verstappen would have had to start in the pit lane.

The same rule that Raikkonen got a penalty for.

If you lose your place in a safety car restart you have to start from the pitlane, you aren't allowed to over take to regain your place.

They've now changed the rule so that this doesn't have to happen anymore.

Have to agree with this. He's just not very likeable in the slightest.

Interesting, although in that link Masi does say that that wouldn't have applied to Max.

Verstappen is quite a nice guy on Dutch television. Surprised to see so many disliking him.

True, but if Leclerc bolted at that point he wouldn't have caught him by the safety car line. Wouldn't have been from the pit lane though - but could have made it interesting between him and Hamilton.

I get it tough. I have never seen interviews with him outside Drive to Survive, so I have only that and his appearance to go, and he really comes across as rather arrogant there. I wouldn't say I would 'hate' him; I don't think he actually says bad or awful things. Just not someone I see myself warming up to. But it's true, he comes across well and reasonable in written articles in Dutch - so maybe we'd all need to see him in a more relaxed environment like those Dutch interviews you mention.

Was Kimi always a sour bastard? I wasn't watching F1 when he first came onto the scene.

I do love seeing compilations of his unique personality though.

How's he sour? In Drive To Survive, he just appears Finnish to me - an introvert with an understated sense of humour who's left cold by the circus.

You're right. I like him, don't get me wrong, but a big part of being a driver is PR so I'm assuming he's only become salty in his later years as he has the power to be like that.

I think it's hilarious how he just keeps going year after year, accepting poor cars and basically not giving a shit about anything. :)

Awful decisions.

Try out new things when a season has already been decided, this is just ridiculous.

Even then, the idea is terrible. The only one I understand is a sprint qualifying with the grid the reverse of the standings. This double qualifying is awful, and the awarding of points a despicable decision.

I don’t see the point. It won’t mix the grid up. Simply means that if Max or Lewis make a mistake during the sprint, they have 20 laps to make up for it. Pretty much guarantees a Red Bull or Mercedes pole

Very well summarized. If Verstappen becomes dominant after Hamilton retires, that will be it for me for a few years.

I too am surprised to see the Max hate sometimes. He doesn't strike me as any more a cnut than most of the field - and generally most of that seems to be based on their early years more than after having been around a few seasons. He's actually been surprisingly measured and calm the last two or so seasons. Imho anyway.

I think people forget how insufferable Lewis was before Mercedes. In fact, I think Vertstappen is way more mature at his age than Lewis was.

Hamilton is a poor loser, no doubting his talent even though the Merc has been in a league of it's own for many years now. I think he lacks the charisma to be the people's champion.

Why the hell are they changing the qualifying setup? Friday..... Bullshit

Yes. And driving average cars really quickly. He is what he is. A very good F1 driver.

WTF is this, why change it when it does not need changing, FRIDAY qualifying is just stuipd, most will be at work and wont even see it !!

eh

How/why are they having fp2 in between qualy and sprint

Practice is largely for car set up on the track no?

Usually in park ferme conditions after qualie for the race

Schumacher was hardly a charismatic chap either

Cant say Prost was... and Vettel whilst having some personality was burdened with that being the personality of an utter twunt

Ive not sen enough of fangio to say but it was such a different era its perhaps not a relavant example anyway, however, based on the recent evidence being a charismatic champion of the people seems to be rather detrimental to being a multi time f1 world champion (where who'd a thunk it but being simgle minded and focussed and caring more about winning that anything else seems to kinda help)

They'll do a first practice to setup for qualfying, then a 2nd practice to setup for the Sprint race / Feature Race.

There’s parc ferme after qualifying on the Friday apparently, so they won’t be able to make changes to the car after that.

I think it’s more to do with being able to do a long run sims in FP2 ahead of the race on Sunday, with the track ‘closer’ to what it will be on Sunday. The teams will be too preoccupied with getting the car setup correctly for the entire weekend in FP1 to be bothered with tyre deg data & long race strategy.

It is weird though. You’d think you’d have FP1/2 on Friday when less people can watch, Quali Saturday morning, Sprint Saturday afternoon and feature race on Sunday.

The cynical part of me thinks they’ve stuck Quali on Friday to boost Friday ticket sales…

That doesn't really make any sense, unless they're just going to set the cars up for race conditions and then do qualy?

I can understand parc ferme after the sprint race but not before. Anyway, we will see as I think it's all still open for changes.

That's what they have to do currently, which is why it's a bit strange that there's a practice session after quali

@Wicked_Badger @Grib

just seen a video that confirms setup changes will be allowed after qualifying. only after the sprint race will full parc ferme come into effect
