F1 2010

Were they not supposed to have an actual F1 test driver helping out with this, or was that all marketing spiel? How did he miss all of this?

What I don't get is how all of the reviews seem to have completely missed all of this. Did they play it for 20 minutes or something?

They got Massa when his eye was half hanging out.

Such a shame that a game so wonderful to play has so much borked with it.

Unless patched I worry that the career mode will be a complete waste of time and that was the main selling point of the game for me and many others.

Just had another race where seemingly half the AI are immune to the pitting rule so slipped down from inside the Top 6 to near enough 20 with no recovery other than what I could claw back gradually myself. That's complete bullshit really. It's not such a big deal when your racing for one of the poorer teams as you expect to be near the back but how the hell are you gonna win a race for one of the top teams when you know you're already at such a massive disadvantage?

It's like eating the most succulent steak and then finding it's got maggots in the middle of it.

Still gonna eat it tho.......

For anyone with technological knowledge of how games/programs work:

would a patch fix the lack of split times, give actual AI instead of cars only existing when you're in view of them etc? or will that have to wait for F1 11?

Either that or Codemasters told them it wasn't the final build.

Split times maybe. I doubt they cold patch the AI.

I'm more bothered about this pit stop bullshit. That needs addressing first.

Anthony Davidson was/is the F1 man involved and widely known as one of the most useful and informative feedback drivers in the business. His job however was to get the feel of the car correct etc not nothing to do with AI interaction and bugs.

Well the qualifying is faked not the real race.

Anyway finished 10th at Monte Carlo. Could have done better but got suck in pit traffic

Well the qualifying is faked not the real race.

Can you explain this? You'll have to do the calculations, but something is off, and whoever did the video I don't think understands something very basic going on.

Here, someone in the lead, the player, gets a lap time 6 seconds slower than the AI driver behind. Yes, it's giving you your first lap time from where you start, not from when you cross the line, but even still, it takes 3 seconds to cross the start/finish line and you pass Webber after about 10 seconds. He finishes the lap around 1 second behind the player.

If it takes the player 3 seconds to cross the line where Webber started, and Webber comes in around a second behind, how is it possible that Webber did the lap 6 seconds faster?

If it wasn't faked, this should not be possible! That AI car is not getting the correct lap time, most probably because that AI car isn't being correctly simulated.

I haven't even noticed most of the bugs and I still find it great fun. Driving with no aids on finished 24th, 24th, 12th and 18th so far in my career with Lotus. Got Monte Carlo next, did a few practice laps and I noticed some frame rate issues on some of the corners it was quite jumpy.

Much better. Loved Istanbul. So many long long straights :D

Finished 7th. Team delighted :D

Hamilton must hate the sight of me. Tried to overtake me at the second last corner but I held my line and the same thing happened to him as it happened in the race today

Beware

If your playing without breaking assists be ready to bang your head a lot :D

You need to get around Level 27 to get an offer from Renault. That's going to take me many more races considering I'm on about Level 8 now :(

 I shall look forward to it. I only did one practice lap that didn't go so well lost the whole front wing. Can't be arsed doing the race tonight though. How far into the season are you?

Just one race ahead. I played the one after Monte Carl i.e Istanbul. Got upto 7th there. Lovely track. Lots of straights and easy to overtake

I loved the Catalunya track, very quick and then that tricky little chicane at the end.

I hated it. That end of the track ruined it for me. And on top of that Hamilton rammed into me at the start and destroyed my race

Oh well I've been lucky to totally avoid rain in any race till now. Did get it at the end of qualifying at some place but it barely made a difference since I was not even close to improving my times even before the rain

One saving grace is that it's unexpectedly good fun on line.

The 3 lap sprint races do a very good job of creating a condensed hyper realistic take on the real thing. If you can avoid the inevitable pile up on the first corner and you know the track you have a very good chance of winning the race. The time punishments for people cutting corners and shunting are enforced well.

I've had both Melbourne and Catalunya in heavy rain  Was hard trying to overtake when you can't see anything for the spray off the car you're trying to pass :D I've got Montreal next which is my favourite track by a mile so far. It's the only one that I know inside out and am really competitive with manual brakes.

Finally got my first career win at Monza in the Virgin (on Expert). Absolutely creamed the lot of them with the lowest downforce setting with a slight tweak of the wings, I like to have the front wing a point lower than the rear as it gives abit more rear stability in the fast stuff I find.

My reputation is now 13 I think and I have offers from Virgin, Lotus and Toro Rosso. I was kinda hoping 2 poles and a race win in essentially a shitbox would attract a few better teams than that.

That was a bit of a tongue in cheek dig at Weastie ;)

You at least play these games. It's when you are so sure that a game is going to be the most brilliant thing ever that you are willing to buy a 2nd console for, without even playing it, that's the level you need to stay clear from mate

Anyhow, have you played F1 enough to give an opinion yet? I'm interested, since you also play the decent PC games as to what you think with this one.

Driving wise, i'd put it on par with F1 CE. Not sim but not arcade. Which for me, Studio Liverpool found the perfect balance of. Codies need to refine theirs very slightly. Could of been a very very good game if they had ironed out some bugs. I remember brad I think, talking about releasing the game earlier to coincide with the season launch, and they should have done this for next years season. It gives them another 6 months to work from and not try and get it out before this season finishes.

I also extremely hate the fact that you can stick a HRT or Lotus anywhere near the top 10. They've royally fecked up on that one. They didn't want to make it sim like, but thats what made F1 CE fun.

Remember I was talking about actually wanting to race for a win, not just to finish the game? Well, there you go. I'm glad I didn't buy this because it'll end up like Grid. I've played it once, finished, will never ever play it again. There is simply no draw. Its lifeless and dull.... Its like that typical cliche of a smoking hotty. Extremely attractive, but the personality of a parking meter.

It's not race A.I that's faked (although I've not experienced it yet to know whether that's good or not).

In all, it's piss poor but not totally unbelievable coming from Codemasters. One of those forum members pointed out that the likes of iRacing weren't brilliant from the start, but built up to what it is now over the years. However, the makers of both games wildly differ, I doubt this F1 series will get much better too quickly.

Once iRacing got some money behind from users, it kicked on massively. The physics and the like have always been fantastic, but the online play was a bit iffy. Effectively, this is just Dirt 2 with a different cover. Seems like they didn't change the engine at all apart from the driving.

I've managed to recover a fair few spins. I didn't though from word go, I wonder if its a traction issue because as soon as I turned Traction Control and ABS off I could fight the car during a spin and recover it.

I'm really enjoying racing around the track, fighting the corners etc. But the actual races so far are really disappointing. Far too many bugs at present to make it enjoyable.

But learning the track and driving round with steering wheel/pedals is great fun. China has some great fast corners. One thing I have learned though, the more curbs you drive over the more likely you are to destroy your tyres but also spin out. If you accelerate whilst on a curb/white line then your chance of spinning out is much higher. Stay on the track and you'll be more consitient.

I think I left Traction Control at medium, everything else is off though. I'll take all the advice on board like smoother throttling and trying not to touch the curb. I hate the curbs in this game.

Do any of you guys enable "flashbacks"? I can't bring myself to enable them as real F1 drivers don't get that luxury do they?

Will never use them, I'm onto china now, 40% chance of rain on race day due to stay dry for practice and qualifying

It seems like a total train wreck.

I have no doubt that actually driving the car is enjoyable. I suppose that online is fine? But that lot is simply not acceptable for a full priced fully licenced F1 game. It was obviously seriously rushed out when it wasn't ready (due to contractual obligations for one).

Most of the issues in that bug thread are wrong though mate.

I've never had puncture yet. Fact it the punctures are a great sim element to stop overly aggressive drivers.

Played last night a championship of 7 races with a full room (12 lads).

Was immense, no lag at all which is a miracle in its self. One of the most enjoyable online nights for a long time.

I have my issues with this game, it is not perfect but it is one of the best driving games made for consoles.

FF needs a patch, timing data needs to be put in, but racing on this game is unmatched.

Yes but you need to actually simulate punctures for it to be worthwhile. Most people are saying they get them for no reason other then the game randomly selecting when one occurs.

I'm yet to see it be recreated as accurately as Live For Speed. Punctures from overwear, wrong tyre pressures and flatspots. Even iRacing doesn't do flatspots.

Well if you have the AI set to a low difficulty of course you can.

Put the AI on expert and no way will you be challenging with a low team, unless there is a train wreck and you get lucky.

No, not most people, a couple of people who are being told it is because of driving over curbs, hitting other cars etc.

If it was a bug we would all get them.

Fact is I played a full room last night 7 races and the only punctures suffered were in crashes, makes perfect sense to me.

played this a bit at the weekend, very hard to get into a run on it - must have played hours on that first track, trying to learn it well enough to do well in qualifying (best time if have got is 2:04 on Q1, couldn't match it in the later rounds and finished up with 8th with a 2:05 or something like that)

Really do find it enjoyable though, love having to get to know the tracks.

I have noticed a few bugs, such as the timings being completely wrong (on the first lap I did a 2:11 and made up a few places - people behind me had 2:04's!) but to be honest i don't really care about that, the timings during the race don't matter to me at all. As long as the cars behave and race well (when i can see them) i don't really mind what happens elsewhere.

The pitstop bug does need to be sorted though - it is a big problem.

Still though, looking forward to getting home tonight and putting in a few laps.

To be fair, I doubt most of the people complaining realise why they've got punctures. I've put in quite a bit of game time now and have only had one puncture, which was a result of having a bit of gravel on the front left tyre and hitting a curb at a silly angle. I actually think punctures don't happen quite enough, considering some of the stupid things I've done. (Although if the A.I is largely faked, it no doubt would only be a hindrance to the player which of course is shit).

I think the tyres are handled quite well actually, the main problem seems to be they've not balanced the effects quite right (trying to make it too appealing to all, they should have left it alone at the highest level). For example tyre wear does affect the handling correctly, but not enough. Rain and the wet track is the same.

Driving over curbs doesn't cut tyres unless they are on extremely low pressures and the sidewalls are still soft.

12th on the grid in china, looking right up the arse of shumachers car:D

That first corner in China is soooo frustrating. I've learnt though that you don't actually need to break for that corner, just use the gears to slow the car down and when you get down to 2nd you can then turn it in.

I think China is probably the most enjoyable track i've raced round so far. The stands are amazing too.
