Evra to Juve?

If we're bringing in Vermaelen as cover at LB then we'd better hope Shaw stays fit and plays well, as when I've seen Vermaelen at LB he's been really poor.

Aye Vermaelen coming in only makes sense (albeit not someone I'd choose) as an experienced head at CB. Absolute pants at LB.

I just don't see the point in the transfer at all.

From reading the reports it seems that Evra wants to leave and therefore the club is allowing him to leave. I think that's fair enough, Patrice have given us eight years of wonderful service and he doesn't want to stay here as a backup to Shaw.

Still incredibly hard to see him leave though. My favorite player in this United team.

Massive shame to see him go but I think he's gone about things in a very decent manner, given how Moyes tried and failed to replace him and he never raised a stink. Sharp contrast with the way Vidic left us...

I wish him all the best and I wish there was some way we could afford him a testimonial. The man definitely deserves one.

More to the point, his wife wants to leave. How she's suddenly decided she's homesick after 8 years or whatever is beyond me - it was only going to be one more year anyway.

It's a bit weird. Been rumours about her wanting leave for ages though. Might just be that now he's no longer first choice he's lost his motivation to keep on convincing her to stay in Manchester.

Is she Italian? I suspect in reality it's a convenient excuse to allow him to take up a 2 or 3 year deal elsewhere.

More likely what Pogue said. It is not worth the effort to convince her to stay so that he can be Shaw's backup.

Fair play to him for wanting to seek out first team football though (if that's what Juve are offering him - and I imagine it is)... in a world where players get lambasted for sitting on the bench and collecting a paycheck when they could be playing first team football at a similar level elsewhere - Evra at least is doing the right thing for his career, of which he can easily play 2 or 3 seasons top level football at Italian pace.

Thinks shee's French but has lived in Italy before:

Born in Dakar, Senegal, but raised in the tough Parisian quartier of Les Ulis as one of a Senegalese diplomat's 24 offspring, Evra learned the meanings of loyalty and teamwork from an early age. He has been with his wife Sandra for 14 years, meeting at school and emigrating to Italy together, as the then unrated striker struggled to establish himself.

I know virtually no one thinks this, but I think it's a perfectly good excuse if your wife wants to live somewhere else. Particularly if it's her home, or feels like it. There is life outside of football.

And unless his wife is Italian, she's still going to be homesick?

Edit: noticed the question was answered above.

I would have thought most people think that's a pretty valid excuse, though they'd prefer him to stay.

Not happy with this to be honest. Juventus are the biggest scavengers in today's transfer market.

It's a fair comment - it's just one of those things that no one thinks about! I imagine moving cities/countries for very young players, or players with children, must be especially tricky, - yet it's never given much consideration by anyone when talking about transfers.

I feel you. Just that most people would firstly see things through red tinted supporter glasses, rather than seeing things objectively.

In football they usually act like the wife's a selfish diva, or that destination is a weak second to the status of the club. Personally I'm surprised more people don't move to Roma or the New York Redbulls. I would.

There is life outside football. There's also life after football. Unlike almost any other profession, you can earn enough money by your mid-30s to never need to work again and live wherever the hell you want. That's why it can be difficult to understand a footballer making a move that is detrimental to his career, just so his wife can be a bit nearer to some nice shops.

Of course, in this instance, moving to Italy probably means playing more football (for a team who have a great chance of winning trophies) and a nice end of career pay-day. As well as keeping the missus onside. So it's a no-brainer for him, really.

Thierry Henry did it nicely

London
Barcelona
New York

Sweet.

Toronto would be another one I'd be considering, amazing city and quality of life.

I'd just keep moving places on a free after doing my 4 year deals.......Man Utd to Barca to Roma to Bayern to Paris to retirement in NY with loans to Australia/Argentina to keep me fresh. What a working career it'd be.

cnuts got Pogba, Pirlo, Llorente and Vidal for like £13m combined.

That's the Juve way.

They are less picky then us and they tend to sniff some great deals around. Mind they had their share of expensive feck ups. Felipe Melo and Diego to mention a few of them.

If I was a world class footballer and wasn't a fan of any team in particular, Manchester would be well down my list of potential homes. It'd probably go Barcelona > Madrid > London > Paris > Everywhere else. Obviously you'd have to factor in playing for great clubs, which would obviously make us an attraction, but for purely lifestyle reasons it makes perfect sense, as you say.

L.A would be pretty high on my list.. would definitely be up for finishing my career with the mighty Galaxy.

Yeah, but nobody says that when they're making a detrimental move. They say it when they're making a sideways move. To a Milan or a Madrid or a London. fecking wife for wanting her husband to play for a good team AND live somewhere she likes. What a bitch.

Obviously I'm using a completely staw wife here, but it happens.

Have we told them they can have him in a swap deal for Vidal and Pogba yet?

Yeah, but nobody says that when they're making a detrimental move. They say it when they're making a sideways move.

Depends which club you support. Up until *spit* last season, you could argue that almost any move away from MUFC was detrimental to a footballer's career.

And that's even when you consider the very biggest clubs in the world. Compare and contrast Ronaldo's first few seasons at Madrid with the success enjoyed by United in his absence (which would have probably been even more substantial had he stayed put)

You're obviously not married.

So can any Juventus watcher explain whats going to happen with Evra? I was under the impression that Asamoah does a good job up and down the left in their system. But if Evra is leaving because he fears he'll be 2nd choice here, why would he be signing for Juventus to be the same?

Maybe Asamoah can play on the right as Juve are struggling to keep hold of Lichtsteiner.
I hear Conte wants to change the formation anyway, pretty sure Evra will be first choice

We have lost too much experience in too short a space of time and it's hard to see this not coming back to haunt us at critical points in the season. However when a player who has served the club so well asks to leave the club is obliged to respect their wishes . I wish him well in his future endeavors.a.

I wish he would just shove off already, and United accept the £2-3m bid. I dont want Shaw learning from Pat when his defensive qualities have dipped the past three years. I'd rather have Shaw develop under a proper coach.

Sad to see Evra leave, but it's better that he leaves on his own terms. As great as he was, he will not be happy being 2nd choice at left back. It's sink or swim time for Shaw. Hopefully we can get Daley Blind in for cover at left back and other areas.
