Everton 2017/2018 thread

Think Koeman would look to continue with a 4321 system.

Pickford
Coleman Keane Williams Baines
Gueye Schneiderlin Klaassen
Barkley Rooney
Sandro
That team lacks goals. They are sorely going to miss Lukaku. £100m to United or Chelsea it seems now. Insane.

I rate Koeman and he is a good manager, if they ger a striker in like Giroud, they will be fine. I think the reason why Lukaku scores so many goals is because of the system Koeman set up. I actually think Rooney will thrive there as well and could be a 15 goal scorer.

Lukaku was scoring goals at Everton before Koeman came.

Anyway, so much for their billionaire owner spending money heh? They're simply using the Lukaku money.

A system that creates goals for their striker to score? What witch-craft is this?!

Good business, building a squad rather than just a team. Something Everton haven't had in decades.

That said, their dealings are receiving a great deal of attention, possibly disproportionately so. They've bought well but it's being framed in a way that doesn't really reflect where they stand amongst the top sides. The hype seems to be related to the speed of the business.

Their strategy has been to get transfers done early; it is to pick low hanging fruit and avoid protracted negotiations. That's a decent approach but it doesn't buy you real top quality that Everton need. They were way off top 4 last season and I'm not sure buying these guys will have bridged the gap. It reminds me of Liverpool's 2011 summer business. Lots of perfectly decent footballers but very little real top talent.

Is it a case of Everton running fast just to stand still?

You're underselling their signings.

Keane and Pickford are very good players already with loads of room for improvement. Sandro would've been signed by At. Madrid, had it not been for the transfer ban. Klaasen, I haven't seen him play so no clue about them. Rooney is bit of a strange one, I don't understand why they want to sign him.

I think they're good players but are they getting into the top 6 with them? Bare in mind that most big business isn't done yet. Most top 6 sides haven't done much business yet. Their "firstness" is possibly giving them a heightened sense of strength.

Are they signing Rooney to replace Lukaku or will he battle Barklay for the 10 position?

Cover for Sandro Ramirez will be my guess. Klaassen will fight it out with Barkley for 10.

I will say they've definitely bridged the gap between them and the top six. This is obviously based on my assumption that their signings have improved the squad and Klaassen, Ramirez and Rooney will make up for Lukaku's goals to a good extent.

If Arsenal lose Sanchez and Pool mess up their transfers, they are in with a chance. I would definitely be excited right now if I were a Toffee :D

But even if Liverpool don't buy another player they still have far more quality than Everton.

Would love it of they crash out of Europe and finish 10th or something next season.

They still severely lack firepower. Why the hell did they want Rooney?

Rooney is not getting into their side for long if they sign Giroud and Sandro settles well.

Just wonder what will David Moyes be thinking after operating on a tight budget for 10 years. He would not even sign a player outright try him for a loan spell for a season and then next seat make his move permanent. (Howard,Saha & pienaar come to mind)

I like what they are doing this window. Sigurdsson and Gray are rumoured to be also on their list

Yeah, because Moyes was Mr.Decisive when he had the Utd budget behind him. papers today reporting Chelsea are interested in Davies, if its more than paper talk we need to be all in for him, been impressed with him every time I have seen him play.

As I'll have to stop saying at some point, my Dad is a Blue so I know plenty about Everton. I think they've done great business all in all and the fact that they've hardly spent anything (net) is a plus, not a minus.

Getting a decent keeper was arguably the top priority. Both of their keepers last term were woeful and Pickford could add 10 points alone. Keane is a top class addition too and the pair help keep a little bit of an English core at the back.

Sandro could well be the bargain of the season. His goals per minute ratio in La Liga was better than Neymar, Benzema and Griezmann. Not bad playing for the side that finished 11th! He's a brilliant all-round striker and has apparently looked sharp in pre-season. Schooled at La Masia you can be sure he has a good brain too.

Klaasen is a tough one because the Dutch league is poor but captaining Ajax at 24 to the Europa League final suggests he could be very good and he scores more goals (albeit in Holland) than Barkley.

With Everton's youngsters - Davies, Holgate, Calvert-Lewin and Kieran Dowell - as well, they have solid back-up and a decent squad. If they start the season well and get some confidence I definitely think they can challenge for the top 4.

The issue, as we found ourselves last term, is that the "Big 7" are now all spending huge sums and all have great squads. It's going to be an interesting season, that's for sure. Everton could finish 7th (or lower!) easily but they could even finish 3rd.

Edit - Sorry, forgot to say about Rooney, I think this is partly for his off-pitch impact and "the project" (as seems to be the modern parlance). His role with the youngsters but also in building the stature of the club globally. They don't have anyone anywhere near as recognisable or marketable.

Nah, they've left themselves short up front. Rooney is a busted flush so ultimately relying on the sort of striker we've seen time and again come to this league and flop is a massive gamble.

Klaasen is an interesting one. Very Dutch player in that he's intelligent and technically sound. Not convinced he'll fancy it over here though.

Loved Rooney but so glad he's not our problem anymore. He looks a mile of the pace.

Didn't look very impressive today. Sandro has looked good for them whenever I've seen them and he looked good in the games I saw him play for Malaga. Klaasen is clearly their main creative spark, I have my doubts about how well he'll adjust to the Premier League but we'll see. If he adapts well he could have a good season. Everton are badly lacking on the wings and I don't see them replacing Lukaku's goals. Despite not being particularly great, Barkley will be a loss also.

It must be painful having the current Rooney upfront. I know that feeling.

They have essentially sold there goal scorer for more solidity at the back.

I know it was not really down to them but I would rather have kept a 25-30 goals a season player in my team than what they have bought.

There are not enough goals in that team imo.

Not like you can choose having a productive version of a player desperately wanting to leave.

Lukaku made it clear he wanted out.

I am slightly puzzled why they didnt go for Chicharito, he would have been decent for them.

Scraped a win and hopefully will scrape through to the group stages. I'd hate them to go out now and have an easier time in the PL !

They look like they are all playing with cement blocks on their feet so far. Obviously the season hasn't started properly yet but they were atrocious over both legs against that Slovakian side.

I also wonder where Sigurdsson will play when his inevitable transfer is completed. They really need to replace Lukaku too. Sandro might prove to be a good player for them but I still feel they need an out-and-out scorer like Lukaku was for them. So far, it looks like they will be spreading the goals around the team but I feel they'll badly miss Lukaku.
