ECA statement
ECA announcement:

Reads like a massive WUM.

Exactly where do you think a full league worth of football is going to take place in a congested fixture list?

I don't know. Let's wait for more details. Anything other than that is a gross overreaction at this point.

Sky and BT under the Premier Leagues orders charging fans £15 a game during a pandemic and they have the balls to come out and criticise this.

Everybody is in it for the cash, they’re all in on the heist they just don’t like their cut.

Agreed

Simon Stone: ECA held an emergency meeting in which none of the 12 clubs responded to invitations. Meeting chaired by Edwin van der Sar.

Can someone please summarise this for me I've no idea what the proposals are if honest. A change to the champions league with a select number of teams in it every year no matter what?
As far as I am aware it would be a breakaway league, so all teams involved would leave their current league and not participate anymore.
There would be 12 founding members who cannot be removed from the league in the form of relegation.
5 clubs would be invited each season to participate (the winners of the remaining teams in the top 5 leagues england, france, germany, spain, italy)

Point being? You just can't can the best performing or best viewed teams from a tournament for non sporting reasons. Lawsuits would fly.

You certainly can if the participating club is in breach of contact. The TV license deals are paid out annually. If it doesnt happpen, it simply doesn't get paid, or the clubs are forced to pay back the fee, like they were in 2020 during Covid.

If the product isn't able to be delivered, the value of the contract will simply be lowered.

Ourseleves & Arsenal kicked out of the EL semis as well then
Oh yeah definitely.

Lets have a quick look at the english clubs involved in this.

Utd: american owners, who just want to take a healthy dividend from the club every year and would sell if someone offered them a few billion for the club.

Arsenal: american owner, who would sell if he was offered a few billion for the club.

Liverpool: american owners who would sell if offered a few billion for the club.

Spurs: levy, who would sell if offered a few billion for the club. Its ready made pacakge for sale, new stadium, new training ground.

Chelsea: no idea if Abramovich would sell the club.

City: no idea what the owners would do.

So for at least 4 of the clubs involved, the owners would stand to make a ridiculous profit from their clubs being in this breakaway super league. Who cares about fans, tradition, history of the clubs. All that matters is selling it at the right time for the right price i.e. breakaway super league after a few seasons.

So many posts on here saying the CL is shite and boring anyways...

Couldn't that just be recency bias due to the fact United don't play a major role in the competition for quite some time now? I can observe it myself, that I am not really interested in CL football anymore as soon as United is out of it/isn't even in it to begin with.

But from a factual point of view, the CL is as exciting as it ever was, maybe even more so. Over the last few years alone, you had fecking Spurs in a Final, Liverpool winning it, Ajax in the Semis etc. That's pretty diverse if you ask me, far from "it's always the same 4 clubs". Sure, not so long ago you had the Real triad but that was also exciting imo, as no one ever managed to defend the CL Title prior to that, let alone win it three times on the trot.

And United don't play a major role due to no ones fault but our own, make no mistake. It's not City's or Chelsea's or oil money's fault that we had no claim to make in England, let alone Europe, for the better part of a decade. The same goes for Liverpool, as well as for Arsenal. Now our collective owners, 'murican investors the lot, want a guaranteed seat at the big boys' table on financial grounds alone. It has nothing to do with the quality of the CL at all, they just want to be in Europe's elite and profit from it, without having to go through the arduous task of actually doing anything on the pitch to deserve it.

Ffs. I was fully against it but since Boris Johnson is also against it then I am now fully in support of it. Bring on the Super League

There’s no announcement tonight is there? Not a single official announcement about one too
