Europa League 24/25

So it’s either Galatasaray, sociedad, Alkmaar or Midtjyland for us next round.

Won't be happy with either of Sociedad/Galatasaray to be honest. Hate Spanish teams and getting 1 out of possible 6 points against Galatasaray last season is still frustrating.

We have to be favourites. They’ll be a few teams that would give us tough ties but over 2 legs should be seeing them off.

Considering we struggle against every team, I think every club left will give us a tough game

Tomorrow 13.00 CET the playoffs..
Feb, 21 13.00 CET the Ro16 involving Manchester United and Tottenham
I don't really get what there is to be drawn for the Ro16? We'll be away then home vs the winner of which tie is drawn tomorrow. What's the draw for on 21/2?

We don’t know who we’re playing after the playoffs yet. It’s us or Tottenham vs the 2 winners out of those 4 teams. My guess anyway.

But we do know, it's all mapped out; or rather it will be after tomorrows draw. We know we can't play Spurs until the final and tomorrow will know the other 3 top 8 sides (and their opponents) who we won't be able to play until the final.

We already know that it's:
RO16 - Sociedad/Galatasary/Alkmaar/Midtjylland - away first, home second
QF - Frankfurt/Lyon/USG/PAOK/FCSB/Ajax

Having just read up on it, the 21 February draw is to determine the home/away order for the QFs, so it's a QF draw which makes far more sense.

Only undefeated team in the competition! Pretty comfortable in the end despite the struggle that Ten Hags first 3 games were.

A few decent sides in the competition who all ended as the top 4 (Lazio, Bilbao, United and Spurs), but the rest are pretty shit who we should be beating comfortably (or out playing I should say, given scoring is always a struggle so they might end up tight).

We seem to be picking up a bit of form now and the players are more used to the system.

Europa league has to be our #1 priority for this season as it's our only path into the champions league for next season which would be huge.

2 of these 4 will qualify on the 20th February… And on the 21st the final table will be drawn, only then will we know which among the 2 teams that qualify (let us assume Sociedad and Galatasaray) will play us and which will play Spurs…

“Who plays who next?

Manchester United and Tottenham both know they will play one of AZ Alkmaar, Midtjylland, Real Sociedad or Galatasaray in the last 16.

Rangers will play one of Fenerbahce, Twente, Bodo/Glimt or Anderlecht in that round.”

With our luck, it’ll be Sociedad, right?
Damnit, guaranteed to be either Real or Gala.

Oh for goodness sake, what a bloody waste of everyone's time when they could easily have it all sorted in 5 minutes today. That 12:03 rush to book flights on 21/2 will be lovely.

Play-Off Draw

FC Twente v Bodo/Glimt (will play Olympiacos/Rangers)
Fenerbahce v Anderlecht (will play Olympiacos/Rangers)

Union St. Gilloise v Ajax (will play Eintracht Frankfurt/Lyon)
PAOK v FCSB (will play Eintracht Frankfurt/Lyon)

AZ Alkmaar v Galatasaray (will play Man Utd/Tottenham)
Midtjylland v Real Sociedad (will play Man Utd/Tottenham)

Ferencvárosi v Viktoria Plzen (will play Lazio/Atletico Bilbao)
Porto v As Roma (will play Lazio/Atletico Bilbao)

Playoff games to be played on 13th February and 20th February.

So if we finished between 5th and 8th we'd get easier draw than finishing 3rd. Think Sociedad beating Midtjylland is a given but not that sure about Galatasaray vs AZ. Last year they got knocked out to Sparta Prague in the playoff round.

I don't think Sociedad are that strong this season. We should be able to knock them in 2 legs but then we ourselves are crap so any of the sides can beat us.

It's like our fate in the Europa cup is to always get knocked out by Spanish clubs....it'll be Sociedad but hopefully this time we can reverse our fortunes!

Wary of the Spanish sides in particular. Been our Kryptonite since we've been crap.

Not really in recent years. Sevilla has been the bogey team.. Since the start of the 2019 season, we are 8W-3D-3L against other Spanish sides. Against Sevilla 0W-1D-2L

Is this one of those weird “feels like” things, then? I have PTSD from the times we used to get a pasting. :(

Nice to know the actual data though, so cheers for that. :+1:

That’s surprising. We’ve still been knocked out of Europe by Spanish sides every single season (apart from last year because we didn’t get past the group) for the past 6 years though.

Sevilla, Barcelona, Sevilla again, Villarreal, Atletico, Sevilla again…

@giorno that’ll be a feisty one if Roma get through!

The relative big hitters taking each other out leaves this competition wide open.

That Porto/Roma v Bilbao/Lazio section is good for everyone else. That's two of the bigger hitters that are going to be gone right there.

If it was a more ''normal'' United side I'd be more confident but obviously we know it's not. If we can get our act together it's a great opportunity though.

Our record against them has actually been alright in the past few years. It's under Fergie I reckon we had a bad record against them.

So more than likely Galatasaray or Real Sociedad in the knock out stages for Man United. A trip to hell or against Spainish opposition and has been hellish results against teams v Spain.

I wonder if no CL teams dropping into the EL has just taken the shine off it. With the teams left there’s no real reason we shouldn’t expect to win the thing. Other than Sociedad, Spurs and Lazio I can’t see many giving us much trouble. Couldn’t really say that when you had the likes of Inter, Barcelona or Porto dropping in to say hello.

Good. About time we had some luck.

I hope United isn't watching Ajax and Mokio right now.
