Europa League 24/25

Are there *any* good teams in the Europa League this season?

Seeing the results, so-called big teams aren't impressing?

If you had to call it right now, who would be the two teams in the final?

I mean Lazio are quite good. Athletic are better than us. Frankfurt are better than us. Lyon, Spurs and Real Sociedad on par with us. Besiktas have that Ole magic now.

If we were on the level we were in 19/20, 20/21 and 22/23, I'd back us to win it. With a mess we are atm you'd think we could be losing against 5-6 of these teams.

Which really big teams are disappointing in your opinion? When I look at the table I see most teams roughly around where I would have expected them. There is no team truly standing out (maybe Lazio), but I think that just shows it's a balanced competition.

To call two teams, I would just go with Lazio and Frankfurt. Lazio because they seem unstoppable so far and Frankfurt just because I feel they are due another cup run and this could kick off things for their "new generation".

This went under the radar. One of the worst results ever for them. A team of that stature should not be losing against a 20 years old Latvian club.
Or this 20 year old Latvian club set up really good to beat the Ajax. :)
Greetings from Latvia and cheers to Ajax supporters - that's what you get when making a mess in our city.

Porto is in completely shambles, we are the Portuguese United at this point.

Looking at your nick, did Deco (whata freaking great player) at some point work with you to help attracting players? or Lucho, or Lisandro? (this last one it's too involved with Racing I guess).
I guess this trio could easily help to attract some South American talent to teh very least and help with socuting I guess. Seems like all of them went to other former clubs to do their thing.

PD: Long time I don't watch Varela, his form has dip a lot nope? I watched when he first arrive and he was in the same good form he had in Boca, since I don't hear anything about him, he must have drop his level quite a lot.

Roma last game did some great intricated passing and dribbling but was pretty toothless and even silly in their last pass, finsih that made them end loosing.

Isn't this a format issue too for both competitions? Between the extra games and the opportunity to lose a couple of games and still progress, it's hard to make much of an assessment. There's not enough jeopordy, even though the format has its advantages compared to what it replaced.

Well said buddy

I can’t remember if Deco brought anyone to Porto when he was an agent. But he did the Nico deal with Barca since he became their Sports Director.

He still has a house in Porto, so there’s a great relationship with the club.

Lucho and Lisandro haven’t worked with the club at all since they left.

Varela is playing like shit, well the whole team is, but he seems very slow, bad reaction time, don’t know, might be tactics but he is struggling with the pace of European football. He was good for a bit last year but will see, maybe the new coach will bring some life into the team.

Btw, do you know anything about Anselmi? Seems he is going to be our new coach, our Amorim!

Fair. Appreciated all the replies. My feeling is the level doesn’t look to be what the competition has been in the past when the CL 3rd placers dropped down into the competition. I guess we’ll see when the KO rounds are on.

Not really, he had so far a carreer on the verge, with good success in places that do not tend to have that. He looks like some sort looney young innovating coach, time will tell I guess.

Yeh, Bielsa seems to be his idol, so at least it will be fun.

Roma don’t usually impress in group stage but they’ve been good in Europe’s KO stages over last 4 years. 2 finals (won ECL vs Feyenoord, and lost EL shootout to Sevilla) and 2 EL semifinals (defeated by United in 2021 and by Leverkusen in 2024).

Last game they had less teeth than Nobby Stiles, some very cool passes, dribblings, interplay, yet no end product and AX was trying on every counter at the highest speed till they got their goal.

Couldn't agree more.
And also at the Dutch journalist who asked if Latvian club has professional players.

Big victory for our country.
Proper Dutch arrogance. They can be really insufferable in the football world. Remember when we (Iceland) beat them at U21 level. Before the game their manager said they didn't bother to scout us because they were more focused on their opponent 3 days later.

I'm watching the Goal show on TNT as I can't stand Lucy Ward's droning. It's been a while since I've suffered Joe Cole as a pundit and it still makes me laugh how he is always being talked over and almost being cut off by the host.

Why is English singer, songwriter football pundit on tv?
