Europa League 24/25

Víkingur beat Panathanaikos 2-1 in ECL. Should have been 2-0 at "home" (play abroad because winter home games are impossible in Iceland).

Quite a bad result for the Greek champs against minnows that haven't played football for three months.

Good away win for J Bialystok against Backa Topola.

Its impossible because they dont have any approved pitches for European games right now, not because of the season. They likely had same conditions as they would have had, playing in Finland at -7'C. Poor Greeks.

We should be beating any of the 4 teams we could be facing. Would prefer to avoid sociedad though as the Spanish play dirty

Who is it that we can play again?

Galatasaray getting smashed is great for us to be honest.

I would be more confident against Sociedad (even considering our dreadful record against Spanish teams) than them, and also think we would beat AZ.

Yeah, really don't want to play Galatasaray... They always raise it when they play us

It's been like 5-7°C the past few days but it's more than the weather that stops the games. Infrastructure isn't there to meet UEFA's standards.

I don’t want Sociedad. From the little I’ve seen, they look like they drop, keep a shape and have a good defensive record? .. we seem to struggle against teams that sit.
Ye I agree. Plus Spanish teams in general are awful to play against. They dive around on the floor all game. AZ would probably give us the most entertaining game.

Isn’t it great to see Magnus Wolf Eikrem still playing for Molde? Had such high hopes for him when he was with us in the academy.

Long may it continue. Money incoming for him, Sancho and Rashford in the summer.
If we sell Antony it’ll actually cost us money in PSR terms. Unless someone offers daft money that is.

Terrible game of football, as I expected. Neither us nor Roma know what to do with the ball so most of the game was spent in midfield doing nothing. Even both our goals had to had defender's deflections (Roma in the assist, ours in the shot).
I expect the second leg to be like this.
We miss Nico so much, we didn't get anyone to replace him and it shows in our midfield, no one can get the ball in the middle and transport it to the attack.

Pleased to see Galatasary being (nearly) knocked out. Didn't fancy that one at all.

Ye true. Same with sancho. Only Rashford brings in pure profit. Which worries me because I think teams are going to come in for Garnacho but I don’t think we should sell him but I reckon we will if someone offers over 50m.

I think we will break even on Sancho if his chelsea deal goes through. Antony is the big worry.

Obviously isn't over yet but Galatasaray will have to have big performance in Istanbul to come back into tie after tonight.

I'd rather we get AZ than Sociedad given how many times we got knocked out by Spanish teams over the years.

Wrong. The remaining amortization from Anthony's purchase will hit our books one way or the other. Selling him just changed when it hits the books. It's a sunk cost.

All the money from any sale is additional revenue, with no additional costs associated.

Selling Sancho was a massive boon for us. His fees were going to be on our books one way our the other. The £25M greatly offsets that.

People get confused with all this "pure profit" nonsense. Make no mistake, it's massively beneficial to sell someone like Sancho or Antony for PSR purposes compared to the alternative of them sitting on your bench collecting all their wages.

Yep, this is entirely obvious. Can't fathom why people thinking receiving millions of pounds and taking a player off the wage bill will cost us money.

I also hope we get AZ. Spanish teams always worry me.

AZ currently 2-1 up away at Galatasaray, so 6-2 ahead on aggregate.

I was definitely hoping Galatasaray got knocked out so that we didn't have to travel to Turkey if we end up playing the winners of these.

And I assumed they'd be the stronger of the two teams - and are top of Turkish league v AZ being 5th in the Dutch league, 14 points off the top.

But the ease which AZ are winning the tie is a surprise. Are they stronger than their Eredivisie placing suggests? Or just a poor showing from Galatasaray?

Aside from Utrecht the 3 other teams ahead are cruising through Europe as well. Eredivisie heading for a decent coefficient this year, who knows, could maybe even get that extra CL spot?

Ah, interesting. So looks a strong year for the top Dutch teams.

Sounds like that would also be a tricky tie then - mind you, with the state we're in, getting past anyone will be tricky!

AZ fan here too (my 2nd team)

We are absolutely capable of giving any side a good game on our day. Defensively we are one of the best sides in Eredivise despite young players in our back line. We lack the absolute top draw players right now to hurt sides in attack more than we do, but the first XI (when fit) is a really good mix of players who fit the system we play well.

It’s a young side, but it has a solid core of players. Not as good of course as Ajax or PSV but there is absolutely no reason we can’t be considered the 3rd best side in Dutch football right now.

I’d absolutely love a United vs AZ in the next round it would be my dream come true! We played 5 years ago and convincingly won, but I think this side is better balanced, even if it’s lacking a talisman of Teun Koopmeiners, we make do with his brother Peer.
