Erik ten Hag | Currently unemployed

I don't like it for two reasons:

1. It sounds like it's something the club wants and not the manager. Which is something that has caused us problems in the past. If ETH wants an ex player then fine, but it shouldn't be a board decision.

2. We're a bit obsessed with the past, similar to what we used to mock Liverpool for. We've had multiple ex players on the coaching staff previously and it clearly hasn't helped.
It's one coach, I'd understand if they told him he had to work with Carrick, Van Persie, Rio and Evra as his coaches. Most people coming into an organisation like United would insist on having an inside man so you don't make mistakes like Moyes did.

Just out of curiosity, I looked at the coaching staff at Liverpool, Chelsea, and City and haven't found any former player there.
He didn't play for City but Pep had Arteta as his assistant for years. There's nothing wrong with trying to bring nurture a young coach. I imagine a teacher like ten Hag would love to have one on his staff.

Yeah. Good point. There’s nothing strange, unusual or inherently negative about ex-players taking on various roles within the club. As you say, it’s basically the norm at top clubs everywhere. Including the club ATH currently manages.
Clubs like Bayern have a well oiled machine of competent people making those decisions.

At united, it plays more into the same old "we'll hire this top guy, but then also hamstring him by imposing decisions on him based on marketing, fanbase coddling and whatever the CEO feels could be good and fun to see."

Amount of changes we need him to make at United is huge. Hope we all are patient enough here.

We literally have zero midfield who would fit his style. Assuming Donny would take one spot, you still need a DM and a midfielder who can pass -
100m for 2.

We don't have a left footed right winger - assuming Anthony or Raphinha would come in .
50m minimum.

A striker who can hold the ball and finish.
50m minimum.

A left footed CB who can build from back- 50m minimum.

That's 250m .

Lingard, Pogba, Hendo,Jones, Cavani, Mata to leave . Hendo could give us 25m. So net amount to be spent - 200 - 225m
We'd need to try and eye a few free transfers, promote some youth and/or try and shift the likes of Rashford/Martial/Dalot for reasonable fees (we shoot ourselves in the foot with the huge wages we hand out!). Even then, this is a 2-3 year rebuild I would guess.

ATH manages Ajax, not Bayern.

How ‘it plays’ to people who don’t have a clue is irrelevant tbh.

So you'd be fine with hiring Jaap Stam?

If it was established he and ten Hag's views were similar in terms of playing football then I wouldn't mind seeing him on the staff. He already was well thought of during his coaching stint with Ajax (including the under age groups) and whilst ultimately failed at Reading he did have them playing the right way and finished in the playoff places with them in their first year.

Seems a good coach but not a.great head coach so to have him on staff might not be so bad.

You missed the joke

Erik Ten hag's tactic is quite similar to Pep's. It's possession based, keep pressing, a lot of pass and good movement in order to make space.
One thing I notice is I don't see Ajax play counter attack style even team is forced to defend in the own half.

We have learned our lesson… surely?

Edit: Stretty News is the source so take that into account.

Step1 : wake up
Step2: check United news, see they interviewed ETH
Step3: think about some bullshit that will work with the interview
Step4: post it online
Step5: see how United fans panic about it
Step6: enjoy the clicks

1. The club want to do it because we know that ETH doesn't really change clubs with large amounts of staff. He comes with one or two assistants and the club sources out the rest. So ofcourse it would be the club looking for assistant managers. I would have actually loved to have McKenna/Carrick with ETH. I feel Carricks understanding of the game would have come to the fore under ETH.

2. We will never stop being obsessed with the past. It's our identity. Mocking Liverpool for it didn't make them suddenly forget their past instead they were lucky to find a manager who bought into their culture while they bought into his philosophy. That's progress. I don't want us to forget our past because it is why I became a man UtD fan.

I wasn't thinking of who it played to as much as the pattern of behaviour it plays into.

The c-level people at united have a persistent pattern of running interference on the sporting side without the qualifications for it. Stuff like this is where they should be exercising restraint rather than bringing their own ideas to the table.

You all know that Ten Hag’s staff at Ajax also consists of many ex-players?
Reiziger, Poulson, Bogarde etc…

I get why United would want an ex-united player but it would have to be someone with coaching experience. Which none of them have I think?
RvP is the only one I can think of. Not counting the Nevilles. Perhaps Stam? Anyone else?

Ruud

I would take Roy Keane as assistant manager, actually.

EtH to select and organise the team. Keane to sit on the bench and look menacing whenever someone stops running. That’s his job.

This isn’t his no2 just an assistant. Rvp wouldn’t actually be a bad assistant, been involved in the sidelines for the Dutch team and also one his old clubs not so? More qualified than most. We do have to rebuild our setup if ETH only bringing his main guy.

RVP comes across as very knowledgeable. Same with Ruud. Rio, not so much as good a defender as he was. And no this isn't an anti English thing. Gerrard for example is proving a good manager himself.

I have it on good authority that these are the questions;

1. Can you tell us about a time when you changed something for the better?
2. Tell us about a time when you changed something that the team didn’t want to do?
3. Tell us about a time when you managed conflict?
4. Can you tell us how you’d deal with @United in sin being a Poch fan boy in every thread?
5. Tell us about the time you voted for @golden_blunder as the best Modmin off all time?

Why not Rooney?

I wouldn’t mind RVP coming in. Obvious Dutch connection with Ten Hag, plus he has some coaching experience already and has a stature in the game that would command respect, players would look up to him.

I agree with this and it’s my main concern with Ten Hag (controlling the dressing room). It will rely on those already in our structure to identify who those people are. They obviously need to be fully bought into the vision, system etc, previous experience playing with these tactics would be nice too. I don’t know if this is RvP or if his name is being thrown in because he’s Dutch.

I hope we stay from this choosing assistant bs. Dont think this current United management will do that.
ETH should choose who he wants. Same goes for Poch in case he is selected

I find the waving arms thing quite interesting. If you remember, Ole sat on bench for 90% of his tenure - even when we were shit. Even when we were trailing by a goal or 2, he just sat on the bench.

I think that sends a different message to the players. The message that came across was he doesn't know what to do, or he doesn't care how badly we performed.
Yeah and he only got off the bench with the coaching speaking just after we scored from a moment as usual without anything to do with coaching most likely, as if it got then confidence to speak.. In the bad moments he couldn't deal with it

Brucey

Manchester United board already fecking up their good choice in getting Ten Hag as manager by forcing a former player as his assistant. Why am not suprised.
You really shouldn’t believe anything you read. There’s no proof United are thinking along these lines.

Isn't ETH assistant known for setting up Ajax's defense which is quite brilliant ? Why wouldn't you want him to be coming in as assistant?

I dont trust the source but given that it's us , I won't be surprised if we have made a demand like that.

You have one job, just do something competent. Don't feck this up .

United have done it with every other manager - hardly a surprise if it’s true
