Such awful management. Pogba should have been sold if this was going to be the outcome last year. You don't let an asset get to the final year of that's just asking to write off huge money. With that cash we could have taken the budget up to £170-200m
Who would buy him during the pandemic?

Nobody in their right mind would blow a good chunk of their budget on Pogba, and selling our players was made even tougher with asinine valuations by Woodward and co, not to mention the stupid, over the top wages our players are on.

Hoping Rangnick pulls out some gems from his pocket.

All the teams around us will be looking to improve their squads too. We won't have a better squad than Chelsea and Spurs. Top 4 next season isn't particularly likely from where we're at.

It is not just who has the better squad.
Did 99% of people agree that we have a better squad that Arsenal and Spurs at the start of the season ? Arguably some said we are even better than Chelsea and ermm...Liverpool and look where we are now, by having incompetent managers.
If ETH is good enough he should at least achieve 4th next season, let's leave aside the "3 years to build" scenario. We have no guarantees he won't leave us in worse shape than we are now. If no clear signs of improvement in terms of actual football and RESULTS are to be seen I would prefer us to be ruthless and stop hoping we found the holy grail. That should be applied to players aswell.

I don't recall this

Worth noting Arsenal nosedived when their key players such as Tierney, Tomiyasu, Partey all fell to injuries. They also had to cut Aubameyang whilst Conte strengthened in January.

For what its worth though, I don't think our squad is worse than Chelsea's at all. They will lose Rudiger + their attack isn't as formidable looking on paper. They had a prolonged phase of almost always relying on their right back to cut open teams, and that's under a proper manager.

I'm sure ETH will be able to carve open teams for fun with the selection of attackers at United.

Its tough. Think as a nation we are wired to always be doing something but, for the first time ever, when I started working remotely due to the pandemic, it really hit home in terms of how much time I was devoting at work and how much more I can do with my day if I’m remote. Think a lot of the country is now starting to feel similarly.

Same over here mate. I think the most a lot of people will do now is hybrid working. If an option I can’t see many going full time back to an office again.

Nobody was going to pay any type of fee for Pogba on top of his wages knowing his contract was expiring.

Particularly with his injury record. It could be made up but the rumoured evaluation of 150m from the club in 2019 was always completely daft.

We beat Spurs twice this season and Chelsea didn’t blow us away.

I am still sticking to what I said about needing 6 players in, this summer. CB, RB, DM, CM, WF, CF.
This would be a start to rebuild.

This is it, we've essentially shot ourselves in the foot over the last 10 years with poor management of the club.

We could all easily list off about 10 players who have been here for YEARS longer than they should have, because we are incapable of selling players due to us placing both a high valuation and they're wages being so inflated it's impossible to do a deal.

It baffles me some players have lasted this long.

We easily have one of the most toxic individual dressing rooms in Europe, i've never felt such dislike for a bunch of players, and more so owners than I do currently.

I've said before and i'll say it again - unless we change the whole structure of the club, from the very top right through - it doesn't matter who the manager is. No manager will ever succeed while we are run the way we are. It's a thankless impossible job.

This is why Ralf is such a good appointment, but only if he is allowed influence and we actually implement the changes needed. Same with Ten Hag - he's got such a good set up at Ajax, and to replicate that here he needs changes in the background too or he's doomed before he starts.

We also dropped 14 points between Southampton, Everton and Watford. Not saying we can't catch up but we need to get our summer business spot on.

People need to stop looking purely on signings.

Look at Spurs for example, a couple Conte signings and they look good.
Look at Newcastle, a couple of Jan signings and they look different.

We cannot underestimate what a good coach can do with the current group of players.

If ETH is as good as people say, this squad should get top 4 with a 3/4 signings, its proven over last 2 years under Ole that this is possible with a sub par manager.

I know it means nothing really but just reading that our main club offices are in London made me shiver slightly. Who’s even left there if Woodward and Judge are gone, and Arnolds based in Manchester?

Do we know when ETH will do his first official interview?

I'm going to guess he leaves Ralf running the team and doing pre and post pressers this weekend (no need to get tarred with the current performances) and an official press conference next Tues/Weds?

100%

The group we have drastically under performed this year.

We went from 2nd + EL final last year to 6th and crashing out against a decent but not stellar Atletico side.

While we clearly do need reinforcing in certain areas, a proper coach will get us +15 points next year no problem.

I don't expect ETH to be able to turn the ship around over night, but I do hope by the start of the 23/24 campaign we should be right back at the top.

Don't look at signings but then mention teams that improved because of good signings?

Quality of players is more important than any manager. Let's not forget a widely held view on here was that we'd improve under Ralf - we actually got worse.

£120m plus £40m Dean Henderson’s sale can give him 3-4 good quality players for starting XI.
£5M - CENTRE BACK = Goncalo Inacio
£35M - CENTRE MIDFIELDER = Frenkie De Jong
£10-15M - CENTRE MIDFIELDER = Ibrahim Sangare
£10-15M - VERSATILE ATTACKER = Christopher NKunku

Total spend: £60-70M. That leaves room for more strengthening, such as Rice (£50-60M) + AWB replacement.

I agree a good manager can change a lot, but 'should' is really not an appropriate expectation. City and Liverpool are miles ahead and that gap can't realisticly be closed. Then you're fighting with Chelsea, Spurs and Arsenal who are all one step ahead at this point, Chelsea arguably even two steps. A few good signings and good management bring United back into that mix for sure, but then it's still a coin toss cause you've got 4 relatively equal teams competing for 2 places from which United has the most ground to make up. Top 4 next year is possible if things turn out well, and not playing European games might work to United's advantage, but it's not by any means something that should be expected.

I mean if you read properly then you'd note I said "stop looking purely on signings"

Yes because Ralf is a coach who has been coaching all his life?

You can post this a million times in all kinds of threads, but it won't make it any different. These numbers remind me of when you allegedly offered 7M euro's to sign Robben from PSV and their chairman responded you could get his signed shirt for that amount. With the numbers you mentioned you'll get nothing else than signed shirts.

You'll need that full 60-70M to sign De Jong and probably even more to sign Nkunku (unless he has a lower buyout clause).

Arsene Wenger's 40m+1 pound offer for Suárez was another classic.

Exactly this. Although I expect a coach to improve us I do not expect us to get to Liverpool or CIty's standards next season.

We can easily get to Spurs, Arsenal standards and eclipse Arsenal easily.

You dont need to spend too much to get a team organised, just some organising in that teams structure will get us 10+ points next season, add to that new players, better attacking structure, we should be targeting top 4.

Catching City and Pool next season is impossible, but we have seen Chelsea Spurs Arsenal all have their weaknesses. We need to capitalise.

If the budget is £120million and we're genuinely looking at FDJ and Timber then we'll be left with about £20million for the other gaping holes. We best hope that either our youth develop quickly into first team players, we become brilliant at selling, our returning loan players step up or that figure is b*llocks! I'm hoping it's a bit of all of them.

We won't stop at 120m.

We’re not going to sign de Jong.

They’ll play the game of their lives and win 9-0 Ronaldo, Rashford and Maguire hat tricks :wenger:
Yes, and that itself deserves kicking out of the club. Not giving flying kite whole season only to become pro football players last game to suck up to new boss is nothing to cheer for. In 5 months they do same to Erik. Like what Roy said once on tv: " Leopards don't change their spots".

I agree it should be a hope not an expectation. I expect next season to continue to unearth how much unsustainable patterns we relied on the last 3 years.

Its also not exactly like the team was even remotely built in the image of his football. ETH would have never bought half of the players, we can't just translate players like AWB into his system like some linear equation.

We have many limited players and will spend the first couple months forcing them to adapt before knowing who is even worth persisting with.

Then we can't also assume all of our signings in the summer will hit. No one had a 100% success on those. High expectations for next year is relying on too much to go right.

Hehui, the best pundit (in my opinion) in China said United will win the title this season...

I mean firstly, you'd expect us to recoup some funds from sales - if we sell Henderson for £40million and some deadwood for a total of £20million, thats another £60million recouped. That gives us £80million for another 2 decent signings or one very good signing.

Secondly, contrary to what everyone's hoping for, we're not going to sign half a dozen or so players in one window. 3-4 is the best we can hope for this summer IMO.
