Our center back get a lot of criticism on the ball but they always look better with Matic on, especially last season ..it's very vital we get a midfielder comfortable receiving the ball from the back line, atleast Fred is decent receiving in more advanced areas

Oh yeah. Makes a big difference. Makes CB's look a lot less incompetent when there's options. Take City for example. With Rodri and their two floating 8's, De Bruyne and whoever they pair with him, if Rodri's passing lane is covered, one of the two 8's becomes the out ball for rotation.

surely there is a better example than this? He has two players close to him one already moving towards him, if he has receives the ball there he has a good chance of being closed down and losing possession

In that one clip alone, there is big difference between what McTominay and Fred did. If you understand the difference, you would know and understand why people call him hiding and why that was good example.

He does this a lot during games, he will hide behind opposition players when we are looking to play out from the back which gives us 1 less passing option for the midfield

That’s hilarious to use Donny as an example. He’s the worst I’ve seen for hiding from the ball since Tom Cleverley was here.

Good thing is we just hired a manager who knows all the fundamentals of positional play and how to implement it.

According to various reports he wanted JLingz out on loan and he was frozen out. If a manager can't make changes then we might as well not hire him in the first place. Let Ole or Carricky finish the mess they started

Various reports are probably full of shit though. He obviously wanted Lingard to stay and blocked his loan after letting Martial leave on loan and losing Greenwood unexpectantly late in the window.

But anyway mate let's not start an off topic discussion about Ralf in here.

Fred was hiding at the beginning of the clip, jogged down and hid behind the second player.
Not much difference if you ask me.

I mean I did phrase it from my PoV, so I don't know what you're trying to argue here?

The same way you think coming in early is a sign he wants to "succeed more", whatever that even means, one could argue not ensuring you're properly rested and charged is neglectful and counterproductive to an undertaking of this magnitude.

I'm just not moved by these gestures. It is what it is.
How do you know how he likes to rest and unwind? Are you holiday pals or something? Maybe he’s the type who’s happy and finds joy in his work? Maybe he’s proactive and likes to get things running before leaving on holiday so that he can actually enjoy it?

If someone terminates their previous contract to get a head start in their new job, it’s only a positive by any sense. This is not some ‘gesture‘ whatever that means in this context.

How would they have his number?

DVB without doubt would but would he give it out?

He is the new manager and it is reported that he has been having conversations with players. I am sure the club or someone would have given it out.

Fred wasn't hiding he was the no 8. He had to drop since McTominay is hiding behind the opposition players not giving his team mate good options to pass the ball to. In that situation what makes you think the CB can successfuly pass the ball to McTominay if he's hiding behind the opposition? On the other hand, when Fred dropped he went in the space of between the two opposition players. Big difference.

Why is wanting to ensure the club has its ducks in a row prior to the transfer window opening a "gesture", particularly while the backroom is undergoing massive reorganisation? Why is that anything to do with "pashun" or "wanting to succeed more"?

The difference is that when Fred drops down, he has more space because one of them has to stay on McT.
My point is that this example is bad.
It's supposed to be a team game, but not many help there... Nice stick for the McT haters to use, og course.
The whole team runs too little, workrate is crap, and... Lots of wrong in this team right now, and it's unfair to put all the blame in McT here.

is there one clip of McT hiding in a game I can look at? Would like to understand what people mean by this

I think hes just shite at positioning

I would like to look at that too.

McT hiding from passes is a popular Redcafe myth.

Fred moved to the position where the passing path is not blocked while McTominay moved/stayed in the position where the passing path was completly blocked by the opposition players. There were lot of unblocking-path spaces where McTominay could move into (for examples: whether it's space between the CB & full back or the space where Fred ran into), but instead he chose the ones where the opposition players are blocking the passing path. That's why people call it hiding and that clip was good example because in that clip he doesn't want to be responsible to receive the ball.

As i said earlier, McT could run like a maniac, with 2 players watching him, he wouldn't find any open space on his own.
You need more players for that.

When Fred joins, he finds space because the other player is following McT.

This isn't a McT thing only.

For the record, i don't care more for any player in the squad than others, so no reason to defend only him.

Our midfield har been crap for a decade, it has made both our defense and attack look worse than it is, but it's not because of McT.

What he did was obviously inexcusable and not appropriate - so he had to be rightly sacked - but not such serious offences that he should never be able to go back to Ajax or work again after some time to reflect and become a better person surely? It also doesn't change the fact that Overmars played a big part in building the title winning teams, without him would they have? Who knows

Important to point out that Overmars resigned and was never sacked

You don't understand the benefits of moving into space.

First, player can move into space to open space for others not only for purpose to receive the ball. If McT runs into the space where it was unblocked and then the opposition player decided to follow him, what happens? It provides open path in the middle. What's the benefit of that open path? Our centre back can pass the ball to more advanced players like Bruno or Fred who were no 8 in that match or our centre back (example Maguire) can dribble the ball forward as he sees big space ahead while McTominay stays behind to cover his position. He didn't need other players to allow McT to do this first scenario.

Second, if McT moves into space let's say the ones between Maguire and the left back, the opposition players wouldn't be ahead of him but still behind him, then McT had enough time to receive the ball or passing it back first touch to the centre back again if the opposition players were too quick to press him. So blaming others for McT didn't do this second scenario is also non-sense because he didn't need others to do this second scenario.

Did you notice Fred around the 10 second mark dropping back as if to say enough is enough? That's the space Mctominay could have occupied rather than putting even more distance between himself and the ball. Well noted the press was intense but at a point his movement was far from ideal and he needed to come shorter or drift wider. I actually also thought these were exaggerations but even if he wasn't hiding it doesn't make him look better that his movement amounted to the same thing.

yeah I kinda agree but this just reinforces my point here, his positioning is the main weakness and he’s not deliberately hiding in games

he just doesn’t know where to be to play the position that’s being asked of him

Bit weird that he's already talking about how he could end up back at Ajax.
Not really. It sounded like more of a sentimental comment, possibly a passing statement of praise and gratitude towards their fans. It’s not far fetched to assume it would happen too, he’s not going to be our manager for his entire career even if hes a huge success here.

I like your debating style. It’s like, I’m not going to explain this thing here, I’m just going to say you are so ignorant that it’s not worth talking about.

okay then, let’s leave it at that I guess

Who cares if you are moved or not. How you try to find a negative in the situation is bizarre really. Always moaning.

If it's possible, I would like to avoid long discussion about McTominay in Erik Ten Hag thread. And to do so, I used this method/debating style by using video/clip and combined my direction to tell you which ones you need to focus on to see the difference and the problem. Hoping the posters would get it right away without needing further explanation and discussion in Erik ten Hag thread. I guess, I shouldn't expect anyone who initially never understand would get it anyway, that was the blunder I made.

I do appreciate your direction

especially the part when you said look at the players that are in this clip

without it I’d probably have never looked at the players that are in that clip

And at which point did I mention or make any remark on having any insight on how he likes to rest and unwind? or is this you just pulled nonsense out of thin air and try to pass it off as something I've implied? What I said is that resting and recuperating are important.

Allegedly coming to Manchester early or not really has no bearing on if I think he "really wants to succeed"

Again, as evidenced above, I've phrased it from my PoV, so once more, what are you arguing with me about?

Gesture/action/move - find the synonym that makes you feel most at ease. I'm not moved by them.

Why is wanting to ensure the club has its ducks in a row prior to the transfer window opening a "gesture", particularly while the backroom is undergoing massive reorganisation? Why is that anything to do with "pashun" or "wanting to succeed more"?

Gesture/action/move - find the synonym that makes you feel most at ease. I'm not moved by them.

I was not the one that said anything about wanting to succeed more. In fact, my stance is that potentially going on holiday/resting/not coming to Manchester early doesn't mean he's less thirsty for success or whatever

Who cares if you are moved or not. How you try to find a negative in the situation is bizarre really. Always moaning.

I mean you guys are the weirdos replying to me trying to convince me that coming to Manchester early means "he really wants to succeed" Even making up stuff like I'm trying to find a negative/moaning - when my initial post was "I don't know why this whole coming to Manchester early thing is being equated to "professionalism" . Verbatim.

Your poor reading comprehension and defensiveness has nothing to do with me.

Lots of reports coming out of us being in talks for players (Jurien Timber/FDJ) already, sign of change already? Hats off to Murtough, Arnold and Ten Hag if true!

ETH is starting work early because he has a huge job on his hands. The fact that he is coming in early also shows to me he is not one for wasting time. There are major issues he needs to address and thats before we get to recruitment. Everything so far has been positive and im sure we all wish him every success while hes here.

Unfourtounately what i learnt today is not everyone would understand the problem and the differences by just telling poster to watch the clip to see the differences of what the two players do in the video clip. My effort trying to spend less time to talk about McT in ETH's thread was wasted.

its all good mate, we can’t always see eye to eye

let’s just focus on the positives here and we finally have a manager who knows what they’re doing tactically

and I think that means moving on from McT as a mainstay in our midfield

You don't understand the benefits of moving into space.

Stopped readin there.

Good to see i'm not the only one coming to this conclusion

Yeah this is another reason why I didn't want to explain it in the first place. @Tarrou

Not worth of someone's time if they don't want to read.

what do you expect when you start with "you don't understand…."?

Can't be bothered with your kind.
