We need to have a better plan for what happens when a game is getting away from us.

We're the only team in the league who pig-headedly exacerbate the situation when we're beaten in a game.

Some of the goals conceded weren't even about tactics.

Tactics can be thrown out the window when the other team just wants it way more. I don't think we won a single 50-50 all game today and almost every goal they scored in the 2nd half came from 2nd balls being won by them or even the 3rd ball.

Just an awful day.

Luckily for him, he's experienced a couple demolitions already this season and has managed to pick up the pieces. This one may be a little harder as we were in some good form, so much harder to explain. Thankfully, we are still in a couple other competitions and can quickly put this result behind us by progressing in those and refocusing the minds.

I hope he makes the whole squad watch that game in full a couple times this week. That can never happen again.

I love how Anthony keeps the ball and gets us up field, also love his passion and determination. But for the love of god I wish he’d go on the outside Atleast once, I don’t think I’ve ever seen him beat a man on the outside and go on a run. It’ll get easier to defend against.
Hoping he improves this with time.
Keeps the ball? He appears to cough it up with great regularity. His passing is poor, his shooting good once every blue moon and his crossing unbelievably bad. Some seem keen to give him credit for his ball retention abilities but it appears to me much of that is just him passing the ball backwards because he can't beat a man

He got the team wrong but the players lacked heart and desire

Was thinking about what the consequences for this are?

Ten hag has maintained that everything has consequences so far. How does cover for this one?
We don’t have the squad right now for major repercussions. Hopefully Sancho and Sabitzer getting more chances but really it’s this lot he has to whip back into shape.

I think we will react positively

Yes, because xG tells you all you need to know about the shambolic defending in the second half.

They scored from half chances because we allowed them to play pinball in our box. The fact we've got away with it before doesn't meant today wasn't a shambles.

This is obviously not the right thread for it, since EtH gets a pass from me but this kind of statement is bloody pathetic.

I wonder, do you want to go back and find the xG for the Arse 8-2? Do you think that'll make Arse fans feel better?

Losing 7-0 against Liverpool is fecking inexcusable.

Remember the Villa 7-2 Liverpool game? That's another freak result that should've ended 3-1 or 3-2 to Villa, according to xG. The only consequence of the result being 7-2 instead of 3-1? Us rival fans laughing at Liverpool and their GD being a bit worse than it should've been. Nothing else. xG gives you a way better metric of performance.

And had we lost 3-1 today, no one would be saying dumb shit like "an elite manager doesn't concede 6 and 7 goals in a season" or "he's already 52 years old and still learning, not a good look" etc. Reactionary posts like that are so pointless

He needs to drop at least Bruno and Shaw after that disgraceful performance, probably more. Dalot shouldn't have started in the first place.

That was weird and was apparent in the 1st half when we didn't even play badly. The players especially in the middle were either hesitant or refusing to go for any 2nd ball and almost every time backed off the Liverpool player going for the ball.

A very bizarre game.

Is this genuine or are you mocking those types of people?

I am just saying if we get a new manager and just win our game in hand, we would only be only ten points behind and so if we win all of our games left over - we can still do it

Literally the story throughout the day.

We showed absolutely no pride nor professionalism throughout the game.

It was a disgrace.

He’s missing the part which ironically seems the easiest, it weird. I do think the issue is exacerbated by not having a good CF though and he’s young.

You’re nowhere near as funny as you think you are with these sarcastic parody posts. And if you’re serious then that’s much worse (for you).
You say this but I’ve found it terribly funny

Genuinely not. This was a shock. Those results were inevitable. In isolation it’s worse but I’m confident he’ll get a response.

I think i'd prefer to lose 4 or 5 nil than 7 though.

However, I do think we'll brush this off fairly quickly.
It was a strange game amongst must win Euro games and a cup final, and very obviously much more important for them.

However, that has to be be a one off for mentality that one. We all thought that'd been massively improved but that was as bad as any tool downing in the last decade.

Don’t think that’s fair. We’ve been going for every competition with an unbalanced squad. Can’t always play champagne football.
I wasn't unfair. Our football has been slowing up game by game, and that's why I'm not surprised we got beat today (although the scale was unnecessary). But yes there are reasons for that. He's working with a limited squad.

He does pass back an awful lot instead of beating a man but my thoughts were he is genuinely hard to dispossess and if he does lose it he fights to get it back, may be wrong

I've been saying the Weghorst experiment needed to end and it got punished today, but honestly I think today was more on the players than ETH. We were second best to way too many duels, which can be attributed to a bit of fatigue, but the complete quit after conceding that third goal is fecking unacceptable. Bruno needs to be fecking sat and quite frankly shouldn't wear the armband ever again for that embarassing effort he put forth. Shaw as well just completely lost his head.

It was also a game of extremes, and honestly we already knew we are a few players off of being a top team.

ETH said after the League Cup win that the players must know only with sacrifice can they keep winning and good is never enough. Today is a great example of that. The result hurts but if it reminds our players that taking their foot off the pedal can result in humiliation like today and spur them on henceforth then good. But feck me, this score line is seriously fecked up.

I’m not surprised. If you find that funny you’ll find anything funny. Not a bad thing to be easily amused I suppose.
Perhaps I came across poorly, but the reason for these silly posts was the reactions in the match thread about ten Hag, Casemiro, Rashford et al, every reaction was OTT which was the reason for my idiotic comments. I was trying to emphasise how stupid those reactions were. Obviously, the result is miserable but we’re still a very, very good team with some very good players who had an off day.

Wrong tactics and/or team selection can and will lose you games, but when you ship 7 with something approaching your strongest line-up, there's a lot more going wrong than tactics or team selection. The players could be managed by a chat bot and you'd still expect them to have enough pride and fight in them to avoid that.

Yep a one or two goal loss could have been down to the tactics but this is just a dereliction from the players

This was a new low and a loss of epic proportions, no two ways about it. Deep down, every poster is massively disappointed. You just cannot lose 7-0, and then to Liverpool. Embarrassing really.

Lets see the response, but this one hurts and will hurt quite a bit

He has just called the players unprofessional, which they were but not once did he take any responsibility for his part
That's because he doesn't need to, to a certain extent, if the players had followed his game plan that he put to them at half time there would've been no collapse. It's all on the players for just giving up for some weird reason. We played well the first half, there was no need to change things straight away at half time when only 1 down.

I think this will be (a) the reality check some around the club need and (b) a chance for ETH to deliver some home truths to the squad.

This was an anomalous, freak performance and result and his job now is to pull everyone back and consign that result to the history books.

As hard as that result is to stomach we must remember the goals of the season; top 4 and maybe a trophy. It’s only through his incredible impact that we’re in the position where we are, having competed on four fronts, playing every 3.5 days for as long as we have, with a wafer thin squad without a real striker, this has been an amazing overachievement.

We keep the faith and see how he responds to what’s going to be a challenging few days. If it’s anything like how he responded to the last one then it’ll remain onwards and upwards.

Yep and not only 2nd balls, how many headers went uncontested today?

Far too many.

Every single goal they scored the 2nd half was a result of basically zero effort/pride.

It was deplorable to watch.

A serious wake-up call for the entire club.

Embarrassing defeat today and it was coming (expected it to happen v Barcelona away) but let's not throw the baby out with the bath water. Before this season started we'd all be delighted with a top 4 finish and winning a trophy. Hopefully can hang on to that top 4 four spot, which would be easy with tired players and busy hectic fixture ahead including two cup competitions

Could not agree more. 7 goals were a freak occurrence today. Don't get me wrong, this was still a bad defeat. But Liverpool last year didn't even try hard.

A well balanced and sensible post.

In my opinion, ETH got the set up wrong. He himself ended up undermining Rashford, Bruno and WW with their positions. Surprised he didn't change it at half time.

Big test of his and this team's character now.

Barring the goal right at the end, the first half was a near-perfect away performance, a prolific striker in the team and we could have been 2-0 up before their goal.

The players absolutely lost it in the first five minutes of the second half, I don’t see how you can coach against that.

It was a complete freak occurrence - Ten Hag’s job is to make sure it never happens again.
