I’m gonna go out on a limb here, and assume ETH didn’t ask them to time trial 14 km.

Running 14 at a relaxed clip is a pure recovery session for a half trained athlete with any sort of endurance training behind them. It’s nothing. A half trained hobby jogger will go out and do it tonight, after spending eight hours at work followed by another four hours battling the kids, and they’ll feel refreshed after the run. And that’s after a 40 km long run yesterday!

If these players can’t handle a 14 km jog because they played a match the day before, that should seriously be grounds for contract termination for a lack of fitness.

So two of our worst players DDG and Maguire have a bit of tension between them? Too bad. Just send them off somewhere.

”In ruins” sounds very dramatic. They are professional athletes ffs. They should run 13k atleast 3 times a week. And every player should be able to run a marathon 42km without any problem.

Not being funny but the average man in the street with reasonable fitness levels can run 10k. It's like 50mins of running.

Elite athletes should be able to do that no bother.

I would assume that it wasn't a simple jog, but more of a interval training or something like that, as it otherwise doesn't make sense that the players would be in such a state after it.

Probably Shaw complaining  I can see him pouting about missing his Sunday roast.

Well if it’s true about a bust up in the dressing room, that explains why we’re not playing as a team and getting leathered every game. Knew there was something wrong behind the scenes, not a chance we should be conceding 4 to Brentford in like halve an hour! Get rid of every single one of them who don’t like each other… let them fight outside of our club so it doesn’t distract anyone. Ten Hag hasn’t helped himself though… when he came in I thought he’d make some big decisions and that included changing the captain, obvs the players aren’t happy with it and they shouldn’t be… he’s useless, on the first game against Brighton he didn’t even know what side he should be leading the team out on so had to ask the Brighton players to swap sides in the tunnel  . Should do what city have done and let the players vote who the captain should be.

My impression is that it was more of a pay your dues, cover the distance thing. But I’d love to see the details of the session, and physiological data like HR and lactate from during.

Captaincy is not a huge deal and if the players are bickering over something like that it’s pathetic.

i support the running part because it is an exercise in showing them how big a gap there was in terms of effort levels. Only yesterday I read an interview with sessegnon where he said conte made them run 42 near sprint lengths of the pitch in preseason to the point half the squad was vomiting.

That's the problem. Sounds like they would vote for DDG - who is no better. These players don't make good decisions, they are thick as hell. The problem for ETH is that no one else is captain material. So I say scrap the captain bullshit and just rotate the armband around for each match days until we can buy someone who can lead.

I’d stay away from anything United related in any form of media for a while. Everybody knows the fans are livid and clicks are easy. Putting a manager under such scrutiny to get clicks from fans who are notoriously volatile and ready to turn on him is unfair. The Athletic or who ever, they are all doing what generates the most money.

We REALLY need to support ETH.

I couldn't care if we finish 15th, he needs to stay and win the power battle.

The media are already trying to hound him out, the players are already complaining. It's pathetic.

We CANNOT keep going in this cycle. Things will never change unless we get a manager that is full command. He needs time to ship out the boo boys and get players that don't crumble at the first sign of hard work.

Exactly!

We don't like some people we work with but that does not mean we stop doing our jobs. This is what these players are doing. It's terrible.
They're like fecking spoilt kids, except kids have an excuse of not being an damn adult. Disgusting stuff.

Yeah, it makes no sense. It's a punishment not a regular training session.

So what? They ran 13km less than Brentford, that is fecking unacceptable.

Having them make up the difference is brilliant. They will run more next week, guaranteed.

If there were no bust ups in the dressing room after this, I‘d be fecking worried.

Agree. We need to send those emails off to United/Arnold about this. Don't let these useless players get away with the nonsense again.

THIS. ETH is absolutely the man to take this club forward and I’d back him over any player in the current squad. The question is whether this board will be able to hold their nerve when the pressure really starts to build through further poor results and the spotlight being turned on them and the owners, and I really hope for the sake of club they do.

I’d of said Bruno was captain material… obviously form out the window. He’s captained sporting. But ye your right the players don’t make good decisions and we’ve got a rotten bunch. Seems like no quick fix unfortunately.

I like Crafton. And I like the Athletic.

But I'm not entirely sure that Ten Hag's decision merits this kind of response/scrutiny.

So it begin.

When ETH is inevitable getting the sack, I am sure there will be a lot of articles come out to paint him as a bad manager.

We will never become a good team again if we can't squash the media/content creator culture in our club.

That's my take as well. But we all know what will happen. Same thing happened with Ralf and the same will happen with ETH.

The players will win another PR battle, they are expert at in.

If Spurs players can do it, you pansy feckers can do it.

Just consider yourself lucky that its not 20km.

Those who are 'in ruins' can get the feck out of this club, those who can stand up again and carry on please continue.

I didn't criticize the manager for making them run 13km, nothing in what I said or suggested is an example of anything.
I didn’t say you did…I replied to you saying that this was a nonstory originally because there is ample recovery time. Then you said something about recovery times being different (implying it could be important) and now you seem to have backtracked.

Have you read the post I was responding to? I was saying that it makes no sense to treat it as if it was part of a normal training program because it's a punishment, not something that is going to repeated weekly.

100% with you on this. He’s the man… just need a good 3 windows to sell and buy players. Klopp finished 8th in his first season at Liverpool. I couldn’t care if we finish outside of the top 4 this season… obviously the rebuild will be helped by finishing top 4 as we will get more quality players. The glazers just think about the money though so finishing outside top 4 loses them a ton of money and then they sack the manager.

Let's not be negative on this.

We have to try to get them not to win any PR battles. Be harder for them this time cause most of the fan base hates their guts.

No, you suggested that you couldn't "ruin" players by making them run 13km and I said that it wasn't true it depends on how you make them run those 13k. I didn't backtrack nor chance a thing, your statement is simply wrong because it ignores the most important variable.

Ffs. It is just 10-12 players running 13 km in total. A mile per player, it is nothing for a pro athlete.

I think he should just rotate the arm band. Bickering stops. At least for the time being.

Not really. If our performance doesn’t improve and we are making the same errors over and over again he will be gone and rightly so. There are very few managers in the world for whom you could say ‘we should stand behind them no matter what’ and ten Hag has not earned that reputation. Allowing him to replace entire team with his own players is probably not the best idea either.

Ten Hag love-in among fans is still strong but they will also eventually turn if we keep treading in this direction.

While I don’t really rate our team and think we are way behind the best teams in the league, I find it silly that ten Hag seems to be absolved of any blame for our horrendous start and seems to have grown into this fan base darling just because our players aren’t very good.

I am a little bit unsure whether to believe this story about making the players run an extra 13k in training. It sounds like the kind of story designed to make a good headline rather than an accurate version of events.

I wouldn't be angry if it did happen though. You wouldn't want it happening every week but some of these players need to wake up. A physical reality check might be what it takes for those who are too tone deaf to look in the mirror.

Honestly, I can't help but think the ludicrous degree of scrutiny the club is under generally is a big part of our problem. If I was a player thinking of coming to United I'd take a look at the way United players get treated, whether it's by our fans, opposition fans or the media and run a mile.

What about Real Madrid, or Barcelona, Bayern? It’s the same there, except if you are shite they generally get rid of you.

The twats should have been bussed out to the countryside and forced to run back.

The source on these leaks is probably Murtough. Keep the focus on the manager when things are going shit.

Promising that the only selection question mark was whether Maguire would start though. Means he's closer to a permanent benching than previously thought.

Yeah the whole captain thing is a non story for me. Maguire shouldn't have been made captain in the first place, but what do you do now? Who is even a settled starter in our team? Literally every position is up in the air.
  • GK - de Gea has been here the longest and would be a fair shout, if he wasn't an absolute garbage goalkeeper these days
  • RB - we need a new RB asap regardless
  • CB - Maguire is captain, Martinez new signing, varane always injured and just 1 year here, the others should be sold or not the level to be captain
  • LB - Shaw is about to be replaced by a new signing so he won't be it
  • CM - Fred probably the best shout here which says it all. Bruno might not keep his place with Eriksen here. The rest are nowhere near good enough.
  • Wing - I would say Rashford if last season didn't happen. But as it is, that's not captain material ever
  • Striker - Ronaldo wants to leave and is toxic in our dressing room at the moment
So what does Ten Hag do? Best to just leave as and see how things play out and make his mind up once he gets to know them all and makes his mind up on the players.

The most alarming thing I've read at the weekend and its only a rumour: ETH has been ordered to play certain players no matter what (not sure who) and if that is true - well is the manager the person to blame afterall?

Where did you read that?

what we saw on Saturday was ruins

It’s not a huge deal for a team like Real Madrid with a team stacked with natural leaders. But I feel it’s significant for us to have a captain with strong leadership. And Maguire isnt the one.

I would even say that it's nowhere easier as a player than at United. Fans excuse everything, the media happily launches stories against the managers and the money is excellent.

Fans of Real, Barca or Bayern would never accept players being that lazy, the noise of their boos etc would reach to Manchester if something happens to them like that 4-0

We haven't got any one in the squad who can be a good effective captain - this is the problem......
