I suppose one can’t have a manager on an expiring contract. Is that the thinking here? I can get behind the whole keeping him decision, even if I don’t agree with it, but extending his contract? A one year extension with a pre-agreed and reduced pay off amount in the event of termination, yes okay. But anything more than that, I would not be able to get behind unless the severance is pre-agreed and not contingent on how long is left on the contract.
We’ve agreed to keep him, his power will be curtailed, okay….good. But he still has a lot to prove and is surely being assessed on a 6-12 month rolling basis right now.

Why can't he have an opinion on Southgate? Despite everything last season he did what Southgate hasn't done and stepped up when it mattered, under immense personal pressure.
Unlike Southgate he also didn't have such an array of talent available for a number of reasons, that he could just leave the likes of Grealish, Rashford and others at home. Southgate has got it made. I’m not sure his ‘bravado’ is the right thing right now. Or, maybe it is, time will tell.

Well, respect goes both ways, doesn't it. INEOS actively and publicly looking for his replacements after he just won the club an FA CUP, does not reek of respect.
BTW, some of his statements are just one word calamities. All he had to say is that INEOS came to the conclusion that he was the best candidate for the job. And that statement doesn't do any harm. He had to say that he believes he is a better coach than the rest of them. Note, he was well beaten by both De Zerbi and Tuchel.
I would honestly not put aside him walking out of the job becausenot agreeing to the new terms, since he has huge transfer power in his current contract. And it will put the club in a really awkward situation where after interviews with 2+ managers, we will have to go again on the Managers Market.

I would say that his most recent comments can easily be interpreted as quite contentious and combative. I find that in itself quite disappointing because it is wholly unnecessary. He seems quite clearly ill at ease with the fact the club talked to other coaches, and has made some comments such as “they are playing football for the first time”, which can only be interpreted as quite condescending and dismissive of those in control.
I won’t debate the merits of whether he is right or wrong. I suspect people’s interpretations of that will be largely determined by whether they were/are Ten Hag “in” or “out”, rather than on their merits. But I will say that whether one thinks he is right or wrong in what he said, the fact he is saying it is quite unproductive and divisive. It doesn’t bode well for the new season if you are going into it with a coach that is talking poorly of his superiors. Very few organisations succeed with a level of dysfunction or resentment at a senior level.
I don’t like what he is doing in the media right now. I personally think he is very lucky that SJR and co have shown faith in him and exhibited patience, and he’d be well advised to shut the feck up.

Yeah this is bang on. Even before this he was somewhat dismissive of Wilcox. I wonder if there's a U-turn in the saga before the season starts.
Compare the two sides....one full of shite, players not following directions, injuries, cnuts refusing to play, zero help from the top, and the other, all the best players in England.

The key here is, what message are INEOS sending the players?
Given they have talked with multiple managers, if they don't extend his contract, the message sent will be "we're trialing you out because no better manager is available and we'll pack you off as soon as we find one". This will result in the players not taking the manager seriously next season and will ensure underperformance.
On the flip side, if they do extend his contract, it'll be telling people he's the best man for the job and they firmly trust and back him. Whether that's true or not is anyone's call, but it won't at least setup a platform for failure.
He ended the season (last few games) very solidly. Maybe he has turned the corner and can adapt his tactics suitably. Ah well, why not let him go with the momentum. If the injury crisis is over and yet we play badly, he may himself decide to go.
We had one good game, the final.
Brighton and Newcastle dominated their games, we were shite, and both should have beaten us.
As I said, I don’t have a problem extending the contract as long as the severance payout is capped. Those terms should understandably remain private. Your points are legitimate. They can also be somewhat combatted by also shipping out underperforming players this summer and having a consistent approach across the board.
Well if you look at the players available and our CB choices, I think that is where the injuries theory/excuse comes in. We were pretty solid once we had Varane and the Butcher back and firing for the final. Anyway, I preferred a new manager but can go along with EtH for another year.
Southgate wanted to play expansive football after the first goal but the players simply disobeyed him.

In the last couple of pages, people have been discussing the article on The Athletic about United's season. The article claims Varane was opposed to the manager's approach, had a 'challenging' relationship with him, and disobeyed tactical instructions. It also reiterates that Ten Hag attempted to drop him. It's hard to square this with the team being improved by his presence; he cannot be part of the problem and the solution.

He has every right to aswell. INEOS handled it so wrongly. Especially interrupting his holiday with his family. It should have been sorted before he went away so then we could have focused straight on signings. They’ve basically shown that they have no faith in ETH and I reckon the only reason they didn’t get tuchel or someone els is because they probably wanted full control or more wage than what was being offered. So INEOS are basically saying we have no other choice but keep ETH. I’d be fuming if I was him and I’d be tempted to quit my self if that ever happened to me. It’s like he’s being used because no one els wanted the job.

You think so? 3-2 vs Newcastle, we almost allowed them back into it.
2-0 against Brighton, they were the better team for most of the game.
and though we managed to execute against City in the final, we rode our luck at times and won with like 27% possession, which isn't sustainable.
I don't think I saw anything in those games that I hadn't seen through the season, to be honest, with the exception being that we looked more solid/compact vs City.
Next season will be interesting
