Agree with this
we've only kept him as none of the available replacements wanted the job.
What a load of garbage that directly contradicts all of the available evidence. More likey we carried out the review, interviewed potential candidates and decided Ten Hag was a better option than those available. Nonsense to just randomly assume we have been “turned down”.

can’t believe he’s still here. it’s like when you drink too much and then wake up because you’ve shit yourself, then go back to sleep hoping that when you wake up again, you won’t have shit yourself.

Yes, rimmy. Very relatable example indeed.

Casemiro was still the wrong signing. At best we were going to get 3-4 good seasons out of him and were not going to be competitive near the top anyway.
In hindsight you are right. I do think signing an older experienced player can be good if it is the right one. Kovacic to Cheaty for example. Maybe not for 70 million though.

He was darn good though that first year. Hag wanted to bring in winners, he is one.

We’ve all been there…right

Article in the Athletic today says we even got to discussing wages with Tuchel in Monaco last week. So I'm not contradicting evidence at all.

1) the athletic regularly chat shite, it’s not some bastion of truth.
2) even if that is true, why couldn’t Utd have disagreed on a major point that made them change their decision? Why is It more likely that the jobless Tuchel turns down the biggest job of his career?

Number 1 is true, most outlets have basically confirmed it.
Number 2, like I said Tuchel probably wanted more money than we were offering him or more of something else, transfers. style of play or whatever, so he turned down our offer.

Either way good result for Utd, never wanted the slender man Cnut in the dugout.

If we finish in the top 3 next season, are you going to admit you were wrong and Ineos made the correct decision?
Depends on the football played. If it's like his first season, then no. Ultimately the goal is to compete for the PL and CL, and playing good football is a prerequisite. If he gets 5th, but gets United playing good football I'll admit I was wrong. I'm not tied to results. I know others are, but I'm not. It's the same reason why I wanted Ten Hag gone. Results can come after the good football is here.

Have a horrible season beating most records in our PL history and get a 2 year contract extension. Only at Man United

Floor shitter, is that you?

For me it now boils down to this:

The managerial situation has been decided, like it or not;
Close this thread and support the club and team you claim to support;
Let's look for positives rather than whataboutery.
Good post

Any chance ETH changes tactics a little bit next season? Let say we sign Branthwaite, could he then use Martinez as an inverted LB similar to Ake at city and then play Branthwaite LCB. We’d still probably need a RCB aswell though.

Even the fans are evenly split on this. Not an easy and obvious decision. I am sure the contract can work in our favor if certain goals are not achieved

Would those of you who want Ten Hag to stay be happy to keep him if you walked in on him satisfying your wife? She climaxes for the first time ever (you thought it was a myth) and orders a takeaway that night.

What sort of Takeaway?

Top 3 is a bit vague, finishing 1st is vastly different to coming 3rd. Granted coming 2nd with a strong challenge might prove some people 'wrong'.

But what would a 3rd place finish prove?

100% agree...we have now accepted mediocrity as the norm
The fans have now accepted it too. 8th place and out of the CL bottom of a relatively easy group. But we managed to pull it together for 1 game vs City after they had a night out so it's all ok. People forget that Coventry was an inch away from knocking us out of the FA Cup. What I will say though is that there are no exercises next season. I don't want to hear any cap for us getting outplayed by almost every team in the league twice.

  • I want to see progress in the league not further decline.
  • We need to win the Europa League as a minimum.
  • Ten Hag is apparently a pro at domestic cups so we should win another.
  • I want to see us dominating games against at least the bottom half teams.
  • I want to see us for a structure and style of play on the pitch.
  • I want crap players who've been here for too long, gone.

Im told on this thread that clubs give underperforming managers who have just clung on to their jobs new contracts all the time. Apparently you have to do it because otherwise the poor lambs have no chance of success because the press might ask awkward questions.

I don’t actually think anyone has yet given a single example of another club doing it though.

What I hope happened is:

INEOS gave Ten Hag a fair review, discussing positives and negatives.

Straightened him out on expectations around transfer policy and need to be more flexible on tactics etc.

Gave him a chance to consider and accept the feedback fully - with the threat of being fired hanging over him if he didn’t.

After a couple of weeks they got on the same page and the contract extension was put on the table.

‘emotional?’ no they took a while to make the decision was obviously very considered

‘What the fans wanted?’ if they read this forum that wouldn’t be the case
I don't think it was "very considered" until the FA Cup final. It seriously seems like a streak of 3 good but also very lucky games turned the corner for Ten Hag, but I am convinced he was destined to leave before the final game, and that would be the right decision to make as it was after a full season of miserable results, breaking all sorts of negative records and playing as terrible football as this club has seen.

I can understand that it's all about trophies, but people seem to think "the review" is just checking if Ten Hag achieved all the KPIs. Is he staying because he delivered a trophy (if that's the case, why did it take so long to announce?), or is he staying because all the alternative moves collapsed? I don't know, but I have my suspicions.

For this reason I am surprised he's staying. Players will see how weak his position is in the club now.

It’s just an absolutely crazy outcome, like I can still understand (though I don’t agree with it) the decision to keep him on but to extend him is just terrible. This idea that he will be on the edge all season is so awful, because firstly he will be on the edge anyways regardless of what happens with his contract. Everyone knows that you were not sure about him and so if the team plays badly again he will be gone. All it does is increase his compensation and sends a terrible message to everyone that we are ok with mediocrity

He doesn’t pay for players. There’s people who do that that can happily tell him no. That’s beyond our budget. Surely?
So he’s just kept in the dark

not a single mention of “Eric they’re saying 80 mil, this is going to hammer further transfer windows, are you sure?”

do you seriously believe he had no clue on the final price

If next season is a continuation of the last 18 months of bad football are you going to admit you were wrong? We know goalposts kept moving last season. "Give him until November", "give him until christmas", then until x player returns, then until the end of the season, then give him another season. Ole finished 2nd and 3rd, it's hardly the most amazing achievement that would prove anyone who doubted Ten Hag was wrong at the time.

The love our fans have for ten hag really is quite a confusing phenomena. He is an autocrat lacking any real charisma and the football we have played has either been dull or incredibly chaotic. He has won a couple of cups but also had a disastrous year in the big competitions and in total He has managed to get us playing good football for a matter of 2-3 months over two seasons.

He seemed to come on board to bring some of the ajax style but has since talked confusingly about how he isn't going to do that but wants to make us the best transition team in the world. There is little evidence of any clear style to our football under him

He often talks about our football in a way that doesn't reflect reality and it seems quite a lot of fans are somehow buying into that.

Given the lack of evidence he can make things better I assume it's just blind hope from people who are weary of change

We’re also the only big club in Europe that have been intricately and purposefully destroyed from within by its owners for over a decade. This has infected every area of the club and it makes those kind of side by side comparisons a little problematic imo

exactly. I’m baffled by this tedious narrative about “oh how the standards have fallen” despite the clear evidence that Ineos are making big changes and demanding the highest standards going forwards.

They did their due diligence, considered several other managers but concluded the grass isn’t greener and are stick8ng with Ten Hag. You could also interpret this as great strategy from Ineos if you look at it another way. While they are trying to transform the structure things probably won’t instantly improve next season. They now have a manager that they can fire next summer easily rather than a new guy on a 5 year deal that peo0e would say hasn’t been given long enough

Who knows but it sounds like they always decided that nothing will happen mid season and they wantes to wait until the aeason was completely over and then have a review with all things considered. People complained that no secision was announced immediately after FA Cup final but actually they weee doing what theh said and having a full review.

IMO no manager ia going to come in mext season and win the league. Therefore, of the managers available v Ten Hag who is going to move is fwd next season? Ten Hag clearly knows how to win when the circumstances are right. Despite the crap that people say aboht just luck, it is more than luck to win trophies in consecutive seasons.

That's not a small thing and isn't a given, considering the fact we were pretty bad for most of last season's matches.

Keeping a manager because he won two trophies in two years is the sort of thing I'd expect Woodward to do because it's very superficial. The question is whether ETH can really take us forward in terms of style and results in the bigger competitions. I hope INEOS have had the ability to look under the surface as well.

That comment is kind of daft. We were smeared with injuries and despite that were only 8 points from 4th. Year before we were 3rd.
