I think we will know in the first 3 PL games if it is the right decision.

We played Wolves last season in the opening game, the signs of us being open were all there.

Obviously, December for results but the way we play in the first 3 PL games will tell us if Ten Hag has learnt at all or not.

I think it will be clear in the pre season. Our pre season last summer was an absolute shambles and it was clear the way we were playing it was going to be a struggle. If we see good football in our pre season then maybe he can turn it around, i'm not talking about results, but the actual football we play. We aren't going to get anywhere playing the same shite brand of football as we have been playing so something needs to change. Fingers crossed he manages to get it all working because honestly, I have zero faith he can turn it around. But hopefully he proves me wrong. I'm not sure I can cope watching us play another 12 months of horrendous football.

The reason Bayern didn't win anything is not Harry Kane. Kompany though, that's weird as feck.

I never said he was. Bayern rarely pay big bucks for players, and they decided to spend 100m on a player and they are now worse off than they were a year ago. They had bigger issues than replacing Lewandowski for Kane.

I hope that Ineos and ETH only identifed transfer targets that our young players are unable to fill. If there are upcoming youngsters, I prefer that we don't buy any replacement. I still think we need to go back to '92 where experience players were sold and young players have an opportunity to make their mark. We won't be competing anytime soon, I would rather ETH start developing talents for the XI. That's a cultural reset.

Yep which is why logically it makes sense, it had to happen really. Still feels a bit eh (not heh) after last season.

I'm fully backing him though, I hope we can have a very positive summer, and really kick on. We should in theory be ahead of teams like Chelsea and Liverpool going into next season, as we're years into a "project" now. We shall see.
Yes I am looking forward to it. I think it was really a crazy season with the injuries, if it were a pie chart of why last season was a failure then I'd attribute a very large chunk to that; then there was all the off field issues and general negativity that always follows a club of our stature. When you think about it it was a cauldron of many issues, it's no wonder it went to shit.

Ten Hag is lucky no doubt, I am fully backing him but there's no getting around he is a lucky man since football is ultimately a results business, but what has gone on under the hood cannot be ignored.

With some signings and a fit and firing squad next season there should be nowhere to hide, we will see what can happen. We've seen already what he can do with a proper team.

I wish I could be this optimistic about the way it's been handled

'considered thought' is a generous description of how this played out

to me it looks like we were all set to sack him, couldn't find a decent replacement and eventually bowed to fan sentiment after winning the cup

now we go into the new season with the managers position looking weak as piss

I mean maybe, yeah. But even if this is the case…. So what? I don’t really see anything particularly wrong with any of that?

Football management operates like this all the time. His job was on the line but then he won a very big game/trophy. There then wasn’t anyone else that wasn’t a huge gamble so he gained a reprieve but will go into the new season needing to hit the ground running. What about that sounds like anything unreasonable or out of the ordinary?

I also don’t think for a second people who wanted Ten Hag to be sacked actually give a feck about the manager’s position seeming weak, and that a full throated confident backing with bumper new contract right after the game would’ve been gladly received. In which case, it then just simply comes down to “they didn’t sack him”

I’d have sacked him but don’t have an issue with him staying, he’s clearly on thin ice and any new contract is fairly meaningless other than ending some of the speculation. He needs to improve dramatically or he’ll be sacked and at least can get on with buying and selling players now.

How awfully logical. This is not the thread for you pal.

Agreed, last pre season was poor and there were warning signs. We couldn't score goals and we were open in pre season too. So like you say, pre season we will know what we are going to see, I agree with that assessment. I hope he has looked at this and gets us playing better than this season gone.

Hit the nail on the head, exactly my thinking and feelings around this.

I think given all the variables it's the right decision, for now. If there was an outstanding candidate available that INEOS really liked, or if they'd been blown away by the meetings that clearly happened, he'd be gone. There isn't and they weren't, so better stick with what we have.

It's worth noting that everything suggests ETH's role in transfers will be hugely minimised - INEOS want a head coach - so tranfers should be made agnostic of the manager. If that's true, than worst case scenario ETH is unable to improve and he's gone by Christmas, at a time when there's a new landscape of coaches out there.

If the injuries/lack of right players was the issue and we look good by Christmas, than even better.

A good tweet? Its daft and it's been explained as to why. Others also shat on it

I'm not rattled, just chuckling since the "football IQ", as you put it has been on top form. In the past couple of days, you've pasted sentiment from articles without actually reading them, shared talkshite and thought you're in a place to mug off Goldbridge while doing so.

Goldbridge is a complete tit, many agree with him too.

But as @Berbaclass would agree, "il do what I want", right?
I concur

You seriously think there are no other factors?

I don’t think those other factors are enough to give him another season. We've had this discussion on repeat since Saf retired. We drag out the saga far longer than other clubs rather than part our ways when we've been humiliated suffiently.

This is where I am at as well.

And to the people complaining about a new contract, what difference does extending his deal by an extra year make?

Yeah, I'd have sacked him mainly on the basis that the performances suggest that a significant number of the players aren't committed to his methods (or haven't got a contract renewal coming up I suppose). I wasn't convinced there was a standout candidate to take over though, or that they'd have much better success with the same players.

It'll certainly be interesting to see whether this goes full disaster with players totally giving up until he's gone, or if an injection of new players will head off the power of a revolt. I think the former is most likely, as it typically is following a vote of confidence in the manager by the board.

Great to know the decision finally. I just hope it won't be Mourinho/Ole situation where we keep them in May/June only to sack them come November/December. Good chances that'll happen again but hopefully not.

Finishing 8th in league is really poor so surely next season will be better? I actually don't see us finishing higher than 5th/6th so winning Europa League would be more realistic path to CL football.

With all the staff coming in this summer (Ashworth etc.) perhaps it is best decision to keep ten Hag for now and not change in that position as well. Options that were available like Tuchel, Pochettino and de Zerbi aren't the ones that you'll just go straightaway to sign them. Some of them (+ McKenna) should be available in 6 months/a year anyway.

It makes almost none. The boost backing him gives us far outweighs the extra compensation if we sack him.

Its a completely different scenario to those.

Jose and Ole finished 2nd and then had to push on and couldn't, Ten Hag has had that bad season so, hopefully we only improve from here.

We were only 8 points from 4th this season, so who's to say we can't get 3rd or 4th next season?

Those are the same fans who applauded the team after they lost 4-0 to Palace. Those fans know things are shiit and the team was trying, which they appreciate.

The FA cup win was a way to repay their support. We have the best fans. Not on this site though.
I strongly disagree. MU has the most deluded,gullible,mediocrity-tolerant fans on the galaxy. This is a fanbase that supports all managers, not the club, regardless of how crappy their performance. No wonder the club is going backwards, and the fans of rival clubs are jubilant about what has happened.

Let's see how Mr Hag handles the incoming pressure and scrutiny. I am happy there will be no hiding place for him from day one.

I think it was handled poorly and that doesn't bode well for this new era

I can get behind backing Ten Hag and that decision quite easily, but the way it was handled looks messy

I'd like to bullish, celebratory, about this meaning no Southgate. However, I think keeping with EtH lines up more with that happening.

England will fail at the Euros and Southgate will leave post. If the players aren't behind EtH then we'll get off to a dreadful start to the season and he could be sacked. It'd make less sense to gamble on EtH if we'd then replace him with a manager that's available right now. Maybe that does or doesn't make sense, I'm just preparing myself for the worst outcome (Southgate).

These Guardian sports journalists are so full of it, honestly.

I think JJ stopped caring a long time ago. Honestly, he comes across as someone who's had enough of writing about football and gets increasingly outlandish, but can't seem to get sacked. Bit like the plot of Office Space.

Ah the old "I'm a better fan than you" line. Always a winner.

Media still trying to dunk on ETH. Telegraph front page; "Cliched Al Pacino speech saves Ten Hag". If it was Klopp you could guarantee it would read "INSPIRATIONAL speech".

Seeing as Newcastle failed to get European football next season, why are the Media not baying for Eddie Howe to be sacked in disgrace?

Hopefully we start signing and selling players soon after the most important decision has been made.
