United still leaking like a sieve

Tuchel to come in next summer after his sabbatical then if this goes belly up?

This really is the last chance saloon for Erik, 2 cups is great don’t get me wrong but last seasons league form is inexcusable as well as the cl exit, let’s see how the ineo$ support structure works this season but it might be too much of a hurdle to overcome. We also need a better plan B, and we can’t be so reliant on players who seemingly get injured so often (Shaw, Martinez, plus now we’ve got no Varane, when fit he was class).

None of the other options screamed “this has to be our guy”, Tuchel the best of the lot imo. Much better than Southgate but that’s like calling the sky blue.

Interesting times ahead.

People would have complained whatever the outcome of this review.

The reality is the options we had were managers who have either failed at top clubs in recent years or have no experience managing a top 6 team...in any league.

It would have been a big gamble, and considering ETH has won things under the shambles of the Glazers, he deserves some credit.

We give him until December, do another mid season review and take it from there. I think this was the best option.

Giving him until December regardless of results up to then would be throwing away the season. If he starts horribly he should be gone swiftly, as we started last season terribly off the pace and never recovered.

Don't think he is good enough to get us where we want to be.

I especially don't want him anywhere near desicions about transfers.

But I also think the club behaved atrociously in the run up to this, and if the alternatives really were poch or southgate, its probably the right option to keep him.

We will need better if we want to be winning champions leagues again though.

I think it’s the wrong decision. The FA cup win papered over the cracks that were there all season. If we start next season playing more of the same, INEOS will come under immense pressure. But I’d be happy to be proven wrong.

At least now we can focus on yet another summer rebuild.

Thankfully that's over. What a mess. All the other options were either risks or not suited to the club, so I am happy with keeping ETH at least for another season.

Key question is, how long is this extension? 1 year extension probably means they're still cautious over him. 3 years and they must believe he's the guy.

I still don't think he can get us competing for major honours but I am happy to let him see out year 3 at least.

This guy pretended to be an ITK and then deleted his all his tweet and then decided to do it for another season which ended up in the same way. I see he is back.

I know some of you are furious but come on, dont post any tom dick and harry opinion here

The reality is that there wasn't an obvious and available option to replace him with. He stays by default.

Slightly meh about the whole thing. It really wasn't a great season in the league and Europe. Very poor quality football on the whole. I want to know how that's going to change.

Guys just in the door. Rushed to get logged on. Does anyone know what Ross Harwoods thoughts are on this?

If the options that were seemingly available, I would rather stick than twist even if I wanted him gone. I don't want him gone for some other seemingly middle of the road manager

Am not worried - I think the whole process of review, rather than being the clusterf some are claiming, was set up as an intentional deliberative process that was designed to signal a significant psychological shift in how the club operates. There is no manager, there is a committee overseeing the playing side who select and evaluate a coach. The decision makers are not concerned with feeding the press or letting a 'manager' have all the control, the are very explicitly seeking to demonstrate that the committee will work in its own way and a coach is a cog in that new machine. Well, I would like to think this anyway.

Vital he gets the CB, CM and ST he says we want now. All with a rumoured £50m net spend budget.

Not happy, not upset

Way overreaction from some posters on here though, it's not the worse decision some here make out, nor is it the best decision.

It seems they've made that decision because there's a lack of top managers available. Every manager/coach available in my opinion was as much of risk as just keeping him, so it was an 'easier' decision for them.

Hope he can turn it around. If they get him the right players and tell him to play the football Ajax did, it'd be fecking great, I still doubt that would happen. the contract extension...bizarre

The contract is on INEOS. He should have stayed as the manager until we figure things out and consider the extension during mid season. INEOS played over smart and delayed the decision. Now you can't go into the season without giving a new contract else players will know he is as good as gone.

I’ve not been his biggest fan but if it was between ETH and fecking Southgate/Frank then thank god he’s staying

Poor league performance last season but the injuries and off the field drama don’t help, the club with the new footballing recruits need to express a desire to play fast attacking football he’s done it at Ajax and I don’t want to see excuses why it’s not done here

I’m behind him 2 trophies in 2 years at the end of the day

"Right decision", good luck selling that when Southgate is managing us in January
The fact of the matter that had the FA Cup final gone the way that it did last season, we'd be making the opposite decision will never sit well with me and continue to be a source of malaise in regards to the new people in charge and our long term prospects as a club for me...

Where's that Guardian "journalist" that said he is sacked no matter what?

Glad for him. He'll know he hasn't done good enough this season, but I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt as we have been plagued with injuries.

Going into next season, he really needs to find that balance. He needs to address the fact that we are easy to play against but also think about how he's going to get the best out of our attacking players.

Rashford Hojlund ?
Mainoo Bruno
?
Shaw Martinez ? Dalot
Onana

Get those three signings right, and I don't see why we can't replicate our first season or better under ten Hag.
Pull Mainoo back to pair with ? in front of Martinez and ? and I'll agree with you. But man, ? is gonna be BUSY!

Maybe they've not forgotten that ten Hag had a very good first season, whereas some fans seem to have short memories.
Very good is a stretch but I'll give you that. At no other serious club in the world does a manager does this bad in the following season and gets rewarded.
First season also had a lot of embarassing moments and this one... Let's all forget about it

At least he can return to work confident that Ineos had his back all this time. Oh wait…

Now he can plan for another domestic cup victory while overseeing us getting dumped out of the EL and masterminding a 13th place finish in the league… and still spout on about us being the most entertaining and dynamic team in the division.

Great.

My gut feeling says this is the right call. Poor alternatives among them, but also I think despite such a horror season there were glimmers of positivity and he absolutely never lost the players despite being through awful form and countless off pitch dramas. We can only hope that this has built some character and resolve, and a more close knit group. Certainly Ive found the team more 'likable' in spite of some truly horrific collapses. It just had a different feel to previous reigns that felt over.

I hope a good window can add to a potentially good base of onana, dalot, martinez, mainoo, ferandes, garnacho, hojlund. theres the makings of a very good team here and surely we can never see such a level of injuries again. Thats obviously something else to try fix.

Happy with this news on balance of things

Not sure why they want to extend contract? Why not, you know, just wait and see how the season goes?

He'll be under much more intense scrutiny and will be expected to hit the ground running next season. The fact that they were even interviewing candidates suggests that INEOS aren't big fans of him as a manager and will basically be looking for a reason to sack him next season. If our league form doesn't improve he'll be gone before December.

We need to stop acting like our choices were Ancelotti or Alonso to replace him. The only names mentioned with any consistency were Tuchel, Poch, De zerbi, Southgate.

When the first two are ruled out, i don't understand whom people wanted to come in? You want ETH sacked but don't want Southgate. So what...just take a punt on De Zerbi because he's just there and you want vengence?

We need better option that ETH, not just pick the easiest option because i need to feel good about someone getting the sack.

There'll be a break clause in any new contract based on CL qualification I reckon. I'm glad. There were no strong, viable alternatives.
