Someone posted a damning verdict on Murtough on what he has achieved so far, youth, women team etc. My major concern now is that we have the right manager but not the right setup, facilities, people in charge

Read similar comments a week or so back that's he's very strict and almost a control freak which is probably not what these players are used to  :nervous: . Hopefully not many of these players will remain at the club though.

Plus ETH is independently wealthy so he doesn't need to compromise his values or vision. The only way it will work is with young kids who are impressionable and mouldable. The few real elder statesman professionals who are willing to change for the sake of their craft will survive.

Otherwise, the likes of Jesse and Pogba have their own fashion lines or other brand activities and meetings to attend in the afternoons won't have liked it one bit if they stay. Too much of a sacrifice.

Rashford is young still and maybe maleable.

Great it has now been confirmed. Hopefully he can get us playing with some sort of focus.

I usually like his videos but he lost me with Maguire and Rashford starting, also suggesting we sign some random Sassuolo forward to lead the line?

Yeah he didn't really offer anything insightful besides shoehorning our current players into Ajax's 4-2-3-1, suggesting we sign a defensive midfielder (shock horror), and possibly sign a centre back to PARTNER Maguire, yes partner not replace. No idea where he found the Sassulo forward either, I'm sure he just wanted a left of field hipster choice no one had heard of.

Analytics like Scamacca. 23 years old, good physically. Sassuolo are playing possession football and Scamacca works hard out of possession, so he'd fit the bill.

Ecstatic about this. Next few years will probably my shape up like this if everything goes according to plan;

Year 1: Utter confusion. Starting XI at the beginning of the season likely very different from final match day starting XI as ETH explores who works and fits and works to impose his system (likely a 4-2-1-3 before shifting to his preferred 4-3-3). You’ll see wonky losses and things won’t often look fluid. Inconsistency will be common but there will be a plan, and the players will not look like they just don’t care. ETH will play with different tactics as he adjusts to the EPL. In a low stakes season, ETH’s experimentation will be welcome although many will think he’s out of his depth for going out on a limb with little on the line.
Year 2: Things start to make sense. There’s an established identity and ETH has quite a few players he really likes. The team has a defined playing style and they begin to accumulate results. They’re not world-beaters, but respectable on any given day. The team could go on a run for EFL or FA Cup, and the focus is top 4 football. ETH has mostly adapted his routine and his tactics to the EPL and this confidence is shared by a team that improves weekly.
Year 3: ETH has his team. The plan is in place, formations are drilled, and years of roster building have given him his ideal XI. The team competes as it should and challenges for the league or Champions League. However, United at this point are likely a team built around a strong XI and a super sub or two. The team can play, but the question is how far they go with whatever depth they have. Tactics are not so much the issue as filling in the edges to compete with the super teams (Madrid, Barca, Bayern, Liverpool, City). ETH likely drops a player everyone loves while simultaneously making a stunning signing that makes everyone clap and say ‘Yup that’s why we picked ‘em!’
Year 4-Forever: ETH has his men, a filled out bench, and the ability to rotate properly. Everything is on the table and United are competing for every bit of silverware. They combine a mixture of strong veterans in ETH’s system with youth who have come up being prepped to fit in and now United are in the proper business of flipping older players for cash and investing in promising youth to create a cycle of success. These are golden days

OR

It all comes crashing down after a year or so and we all head down to the pub for a pint and watch Liverpool/City win yet another league title while we wonder whether it’s worth living on this good earth any longer

A lot of it is going to rest on how quickly we can wrap up signings of incomings & get rid of liabilities. If we have the entire squad/coaching staff set by 1st July & we start practicing as a unit for a month and a half, we're going to have a decent year ahead. I hope the players have their vacations cancelled this year and made to train on their fitness. Last thing we need is for players with their current level of fitness to come back 10 kilos more heavy.

When do we ever wrap up our signings quick? We always drag it on up until near the end of the window.

Good post. Unfortunately, people just don't wait 3 years anymore. Its the social media generation. Instant gratification and the slightest mistake in 18months time and everyone will be calling him a fraud.

Think this will be a boom or bust move. No middle ground. Whether we find our own Guardiola or DeBoer only time will tell now.

Of course Ten Hag is lucky to be coming into such a patient club and fan base. I mean we give managerial frauds 3 years and big money, so the bar is set pretty low for him.

I’ve seen a lot of comparisons to De Boer and Koeman, but I don’t think that’s fair on Ten Hag. Ideally what you look for when you seek a coach to manage at the very highest level is a coach that has proven they can overachieve. You need a manager that has shown he can dominate “weaker” leagues, not just win games with the best teams. That’s what Ten Hag has shown, he hadn’t just won back to back titles, but his teams look so well drilled, they make so many games look like training drills. Especially early days this season they had a ridiculous goals scored/goals conceded ratio, something like 59 scored/5 conceded. Whilst his teams don’t exactly play like Peps city, it’s the similar level of domination. That’s the overachieving I point to that separates him from other managers such as De Boer.

Plus he has shown he can effectively rebuild a side, and he has earned his stripes, slowly working his way up from being an assistant, to managing second teams, then getting a couple of first team gigs. This isn’t an Ole situation, but it also isn’t a LVG situation whereby the manager is past his prime years.
Yeah, I thought my post would have blown away those comparisons, but I guess not.

Ranking of most goals scored per game in Eredivisie of last 12 seasons. This includes every dutch side (Ajax, PSV, Twente).

1. ETH 19' = 3.5 gpg
2. Jol 10' = 3.12 gpg
3. Advocaat 13' = 3.03 gpg
4. ETH 21' = 3 gpg
5. ETH 22' = 2.96 gpg
6. MVB 19' = 2.88 gpg
7. de Boer 12' = 2.74 gpg
8. ETH 20' = 2.72 gpg
9. Cocu 15'= 2.71 gpg
10. Keizer, ETH* 18' = 2.62 gpg (* ETH only had 2.19 gpg after he took over).
11. Cocu 16' = 2.59 gpg
12. Cocu 18' = 2.56 gpg
13. Rutten, Cocu 12' = 2.56 gpg
14. Schmidt 22' = 2.54 gpg
15. Bronckhorst 17' = 2.53 gpg
16. Adriaanse, Mcclaren 12' = 2.41 gpg
17. Rutten 11' = 2.32 gpg

Notice the goals de Boer put up against ETH's Ajax sides. Those comparisons should die off already. De Boer managed Ajax for about 5.5 years btw. So the fact that his name only shows up once below 3 of ETH's Ajax sides, proves the comparison is off.

Which do you see as higher priority out of RB/CB
CB. Rather use Laird there. Feel like Ten Hag can do wonders with him and maybe something with Dalot. Wan Bissaka has to be sold, unless Ten Hag is a miracle worker and can make him usable. I’d rather see Bissaka in a different position or role.

So the club needs 2-4 billion to get us a league?

I actually thought that was a typo.

Put the crackpipe down

No idea what a crackpipe is, im not spending time searching.

Given 200m doesnt buy a lot, 2-4 players that spend of over 5 years is 10-20 players and 1b. That doesnt even consider failures. SAFs signings weren't always successful, there is zero reason to believe going forward all signings will be a success. I could easily see 2b being needed.

When do we ever wrap up our signings quick? We always drag it on up until near the end of the window.
That's when we're chasing big names. I reckon we'll be quite efficient at bringing in players this summer.

Hopefully mate, now the managers confirmed there’s no reason why they shouldn’t be contacting each other on targets and then getting them wrapped up as soon as possible.

Now this is the sort of thing I can get behind for identifying players who are a good fit. Rather than throwing household names around randomly.

What are the chances that his name used to be Erick and he changed it to fit in?

Wheres the verdict? Wouldn't mind giving it a read.

Murtough is clearly a knowledgeable man, just not in what we need, ie building a successful club again.

I've said all along, ten Hag will only be successful if Rangnick is given a more promenant role. He has the know how to build clubs up successfully, his knowledge definitely needs to be more tapped into than just a couple of days a month.

He has a presser coming up tomorrow so I'm expecting him to answer some questions about his new employer :D

Hope they leave him alone and don't ask anything about united. It was reported the announcement was made before the end of the season as he and Ajax were sick of all the media attention due to the uncertainty

There definitely will be questions, that's what journos feed of off , unless he just shots them down at the very start.

Thanks for confirming you no older than 12.

interesting: your determination of age isn’t through a measure im aware of, and it’s irrelevant to the topic on discussion.

would you care to share how you used a tested measure to determine age or would you prefer to discuss ETH.

I am hoping and praying it is.

Yeah, same. But, we should stop waiting for a saviour also (another Fergie). If it doesn't work out, hire another progressive coach. Don't go for Simeone after, like we did with Mourinho.

Just wondering how our lot will swim in this. :nervous:

No chance of that happening.

Also if you look at the last decade, we had no idea what we wanted. We threw a million darts blindfold hoping something will hit the target. If we know what profiles we need for each position, filling them up is going to be a lot easier. I hope we do this time around.

Agree with every word. But I think he has to take the wrecking ball to the squad in June and July....and ensure that at least 90percent of the rotten core is disposed off. 8 new starting 11 players I would say are required to carry out his vision. I know it's too much for a single window but one can hope.

Listening to the initial comments, its sounds like LVG re-visited. the level of details almost made the players' heads explode. Instead of praising them, LVG would go into detail on how they should improve themselves by correcting this mistake or that. The players felt that they were always under a microscope.

I worry that with our Gen Z players, I don't know if they can handle such levels of 'criticism' as opposed to 'analysis'.

Proof that the players have been elevated above the manager. Any players of that disposition need to go.

I don't understand that at all. She's a Liverpool twat. Why is she covering us?
Does it really matter?

Murtough is the right man for the job, pushes for Ralf & pushed for ETH over Poch. Fed up of defending Murtough to people, do your research, there’s plenty of posts I’ve made, where you can see why he’s made for the role.

The Murtough criticism is unreal, despite doing everything right since taking over people still want someone else.
