Poisoned chalice.
Ronaldo's toxicity is going to wreck the dressing room.
Lost out on Timber, FDJ (potentially) and Antony
Squad with a rock bottom confidence and mediocre ability
Ultra competitive league possibly the most competitive ever and rivals have done good business in the window.

I just can't see ETH succeeding in this environment. Fecking SAF would struggle. This season is going to be tough.

ETH has to take the large share of the blame, for this De Jong mess and ultimate failure of the deal.

It’s been clear for so long now, that De Jong never wanted United, but he insisted on staying in the potential deal.

Now the club have been left red faced and humiliated.

Someone had to give the green light to the players who left, from the coaching staff or smth like that? So it's weird. Although having b2b games in different countries and players at home the first time after a preseason tour, the leaving part seemed logical for various reasons. So I really didn't expect that.

There are a few alarm bells starting to ring. Not with Ten Hag, I think he's great, but with the club in general. Woodward has gone but not an awful lot has changed on the surface

Go on Eric lad!
Just shows how standards have slipped at United. Good teams need a strong figurehead who lays down the rules.

Can confirm the quote is accurate. He also confirmed the personal reasons being the reason for his absence in pre season.

He did stress the rules apply to everyone and multiple players left.

Thanks

Now for those who are waiting to kickstart the Ronaldo bashing, you can proceed to the 3 exclusive Ronaldo threads. Lets keep the ETH thread free.

Stop overreacting please, a lot has changed and will continue to till we have stability and continuity. Don’t believe the press doom and gloom and feed into the negative rhetoric from Goldbridge and them. The season starts in a few days so look fwd to that and the return of competitive football.

I think ETH will certainly give all of the affected players a warning rather than a drastic disciplinary measure. Probably second time offence is going to be a different case.

So he's saying it's not just Ronaldo who left without permission, but all the others did so as well. That makes it worse if anything.
Our players will be strolling around by Christmas trying to get him sacked at this rate. I hope Eric has marked every one of their cards and gets ready to exile them as soon as they play up

Is it not your basic responsibility to stay till the end of your game? Can you leave early from work without permission? This is nonsense!

Agree. The club has started to make the right moves in terms of structure, operations and player development starting from Murtough's appointment as Dir of Football, various acquisition of young players for academy and now ETH.

The journey has not been perfect considering the unexpected nature of last season's performances but the overall flow has been positive. With ETH's appointment, we know have a manager who can set the stage for the present and the future.

Not justifying the players actions, but yes you can leave work early if your boss has already set a flexible working culture and doesn't micro manage you. Typically such bosses are fine as long as you deliver the work that you are supposed to do, so they dont focus too much on how much time you spend at your workplace.

Some organizations have military style of culture where they monitor when you clock in and when you clock out, so leaving early requires permission.

Of course you can’t piss off before the end of a match you’re playing in. It’s ridiculous. Apart from the sheer rudeness of not staying to watch your team-mates play you’re also missing the manager’s debrief straight after the game.

Anyhoo. Should probably bring this to Ronaldo thread.

For a footballer the expected work would include turning up for pre-season training, right?

its clever enough play for a player that wants out. Showing yourself not to be toxic wouldn’t exactly hurry your exit. Our trouble is our new manager didn’t talk to our last manager soon enough…he had a title to win…and the need for a striker on the back of greenwood for whatever reason didn’t get communicated in the same week the video evidence of his actions came out. Not having a striker lined up by now reflects poorly on the new manager and everyone above him. May as well just say the new manager as he’ll be the one sacked for it ultimately. Once again the summer transfer window for us wasn’t well coordinated as our manager was new to the club giving them all another 12 months of excuses before we can plan just like our rivals. We needed “open heart surgery”….still do.

Yes agree if that is your office culture. But your work is 90 minutes and you leave early after 45 minutes? What on earth?

I don't think it's an overeaction when we have lost some decent players on a ffrom the squad on a free, have not replaced or even upgraded on them, and we have McTominay and Fred in midfield with no depth in attack, going into Ten Hag's first season. So far, this summer has been a disaster and more of the same from employees that have been inside the club throughout the post SAF era.

I adore Erik already, but I simply can’t see us starting the season like a house on fire after what’s gone on off, and even at times on the pitch this pre-season. For this latest fiasco, who’s even authorising the departure of those players, as claimed by the club, if not Ten Hag? If it wasn’t someone in the coaching staff doing so without his permission, did Ronaldo just tell Dalot to pack up and leave with him at half time?

Confusing, but it doesn’t bode well for the season, and I’m usually very optimistic.

I'm not impressed so far.

Looks like ETH has folded already and is letting players and the club officials get away from him.

Wouldn't suprise me if in 6 months time we are 6th place yet again and it's the same old crap as the last few years.

Fact is
I'm not impressed so far.

How has he folded?

The weird thing is that if multiple players left at half time, some of them must have been youth players. Not very promising if so.

Eriksen, Martinez and Ronaldo were the only ones that may have been on the bench at half times. Would the former two do that after just joining?

How in the world has he folded when there's reports that ETH doesn't even fancy Ronaldo to start?

I have zero fears for ten hag. The players are going to soon realize nothing escapes him and he doesn't take fooling around and is a stickler for discipline. Even better they realize unlike previous regimes he has 100 percent backing from the hierarchy. There wont be any where to hide and any one who refuses to stick with the rules will be kicked off the bus .

So it’s a negative on someone who doesn’t negotiate transfer deals, for not negotiating a transfer deal. Interesting

He is the reason we have not abandoned this fools chase and gone after alternative targets. So yes, as much as I’ve liked the progress, that one would be on him.

You are the glass completely empty kinda guy I assume

I mean, isn't it obvious the club is targeting his players. De Jong wasn't mentioned as a target until Ten Hag walked in the door. The reports are that the club hierarchy are fully backing Ten Hag and pursuing his targets. So yeah, it is almost certainly Ten Hag chasing de Jong. Murtough has agreed a fee. But sure, interesting.

its been far from ideal preperation down to the never ending de Jong saga and Ronaldo. At least he cant lose any more hair...

Ronaldo shouldn't even be anywhere near the squad. He shouldn't have played Sunday and he shouldn't start the season.

You can't try pimp yourself out all window then when it doesn't happen just return whenever you want and expect to be played. I've no idea why ETH didn't put his foot down in this situation.

No I am a realist. The man's not a miracle worker.

Apparently the others who left were not in the match day squad.

The only named players who left were either in that category (Martial, Bruno, Dalot - and some others)...or in the Ronaldo category.

It is not a ideal transfer window and we have many gap to fill. I sincerely hope that ETH trust the youth players and start bringing them in the XI. When I say youth, I mainly talking about Garnacho, Iqbal and Savage.

There is too much of overreacting here, which probably explains that most of you have not worked in companies before.

This is a first time offence which ETH has already explained the consequences to the team. The players may have done this due to past working culture and now that they know how ETH views this, they will not toe the line again unless they have valid reasons. ETH has already set the disciplinary standards since the 1st day of training, so we can be assured there wont be any "dressing room civil war" resulting from this.

So let's shut down the panic mode and focus on Sunday's game.
