Eric Dier | Poch: “He is an important player for us and the idea is not to sell him."

Do you want United to sign Eric Dier?

I have absolutely zero interest in signing Dier. He's extremely overrated, would be very difficult and expensive to sign and I can't see what he would add to the United squad.

The only reason I can think Jose likes him is the assaults on Chelsea players at Stamford Bridge last season.

Why, because his stats don't add up for your lazy opinion?

You probably said the same about Carrick when we tried to sign him.

Dier would be a better buy for United than anyone else we're linked with this summer. EXACTLY what this side needs. But its gonna be very tough to land him. There are lots of attacking players - we could go Griezmann, Lukaku, Moratta, blah, blah...loads of options to improve us in the final third. But in midfield? It;s very hard to find consistency and discipline anywhere in the world. The central midfield role has evolved so much in the past couple of years that it's hard to find the right individual. Dier is perfect for what we need.

That is one of the worst posts I have ever read.

This just seems like a total non-starter to me. Purely because it's Spurs, the money involved would be obscene.

I'm not against Dier at all. Assuming we get a left back who can attack, Dier sitting allows both full backs to go forward. He's the sort of player we need to go 433.

I am not against him, but not at that price. Spending close to 100m on him and Perisic is nothing short of shocking.

Agree, he will improve with Mourinho, look at Fellaini, for example.

Why would he? He is currently with a better coach. Fellaini has improved because he is now playing for a coach that has a system that suits him.

Pochettino replaced Dier by bringing in Wanayama for £12-15 mill. Now we are supposed to be willing to pay £40 mill for Dier.

I disagree about the better coach bit.

Criticism of someone else's opinion as lazy if they disagree with you is.. lazy

I agree with POF
I'm not saying Dier is a bad player but is he good enough to justify having to throw stupid money at Levy? I think Spurs might be half tempted as he's just not that good
You are right that CM is a key position and has changed in recent years but honestly I think we can do better. If you can't that may be a failure of imagination. Dier may develop further and become a better player but he's no young Carrick let alone Carrick at his peak.
Also isn't Dier just trying to negotiate a better contract with Spurs at the moment so paper talk linking him to us just helps with that

I'm sure dier would be a capable holding midfielder but he'd cost far more than he currently merits. Can't José just settle tuanzebe in there? He's got all the basic tools for the position.

Are we actually linked to him any more ? I didn't see a single new rumor about him for a long time.

I will love him as a midfield option BTW. Not many world class DMFs are available in this market I assume. People need to stop complaining about price because Ed knows how he will fullfil all summer signings together. It's his money, not ours! I don't think paying for any transfer will affect another one in Ed mind.

Will do that. Pretty sure every major newspaper has linked us with him.

Are there any strong links on this thread? Can we also threadmark important tweets in every rumour thread? @Damien @KM

Threadmarked one link I could find. Can't be bothered to find 30 pages just to find newspapers linkages. If anyone else can find them for me then I'll happily threadlink them.

I can't see a lot of reason of why people are against this transfer apart from the fees. Dier is very versatile player (RB, DM, CB) and I think he's a good defensive midfielder in term of quality and I reckon he's good enough to play for us especially in Jose's system and will be a useful signing and also fill in the role that we need (holding midfielder role). Personally I prefer Fabinho over him since he's cheaper (from what I heard) but to me in term of quality they both are pretty much equal.

Mourinho's first conference. He doesn't like utility players.

Just because a player can play more than one position, it doesn't make him a utility player. Messi can play many positions at a high level, but he's not a utility player because of it.

Similarly we have Verthongen and Alderweireld who have played right and left back for Belgium. Doesn't seem to make them worse at CB.

I think Mourinho meant to have players who aren't good enough for any one position, but kept simply for cover becauee of their versatility. Something I don't think is the case with Dier.

Mourinho: I prefer specialist. A few months later, Mourinho: Valencia is the best right back in the world. Even though we all know he wasn't a specialist right back.

Never believe on what manager said on media, they only said random words to answer the questions which what the media want to.

The guys was making it out like Mourinho will like he because he can play here there and everywhere. I'm just pointing out that will have nothing to do with anything. He wants him as a midfielder and that's it. He will buy a centre back to play centre back.

Is this a joke? The last time Valencia played RW was against Everton 2 years ago.

I really like Dier and think he could be a big success here. I do think there are slightly better holders out there especially for the nuts money, but Fabinho even would probably cost similar at this stage

Not sure that logic holds - Valencia is now a specialist right-back and has been for a few seasons. Yes he has changed position over his career, but he's never been a utility player.

Blind would be a better example, he still gets plenty of games.

He can play as a right winger or right midfielder and a right back.

Well, you must have missed the games then because the last time he played as a RW or RM was this year against Middlesbrough and Chelsea.

At least his value will have gone down after last night!
That's the worry, couldn't boss a game against 10 men. Looked very timid and had no idea what to do with the ball, was out of position so often and left massive holes infront of the defence.

I really don't want him.

Has there been any reliable reports lately? I know Men had a piece yesterday but anyone else?

In what world is Poch better coach than Mourinho? Especially when he's predominantly responsible for the defensive phase playing as a DM.

A very strange signing if we go for him. Don't think he is world class or especially dynamic. Can't quite figure out how he is an upgrade on what we already have. Fabinho seems a much clearer case.
