Enzo Fernández | signs for Chelsea

Guarantee if we bought him, he’d have been just like Amad & Pellistri (played in youth team and loaned out) and we’d all complain how “incompetent” we are.

But City managed to sign Alvarez from the same team and bypass the £100m tax the Portuguese clubs add to the valuations of these players. But you're right, I guess fans will always be more excited about potentially signing the latest £100m man on the market than signing the same player for £10m before all the hype.

My take is we are looking miles better with Eriksen, who performs a key role in making us tick... but his age shows and with his health record I would be wary about building the midfield around him.

It's a truckload of money but he fits the profile perfectly. Would be a far better investment than all the pointless luxury signings we've made in the last decade.

We don't have the money though so let's hope Eriksen can somehow keep it together for a couple of years. And then... we start looking at replacing both him and Casemiro.

It just feels wrong not to stick this guy into our current midfield and watch it chew up rivals. We are a never ending work in progress.
If the sale happens before the summer I think we will get him because we will hve the money and the upward trajectory. I think Eriksen will be more useful to us if his minutes are managed and if he is used in a more attacking role, bar Bruno there is simply no one else with his vision to see and ability to execute defense splitting passes.

Enzo Fernandez's skillset will complement Casemiro and they will build possibly the best deeplying midfield duo in the PL. I pray he doesnt move in January and we sell before the summer to give us a chance on him.

It matters feck all for FFP whether a transfer is paid in one go or multiple installments though, so either Romano is clueless or the one sharing what he said is clueless. My money's on the latter.

In either case the fee is amortized equally over the full contract length on the buying club's accounts. 120M€ transfer fee and a five year contract means 24M€ a year (+ wages, bonuses) on the books even if the actual transfer fee was paid in a one-off payment. For cashflow purposes it's definitely better to have the payments spread out over a longer period but that's not at all what FFP is about.

Now whether a 120M€ signing would have some FFP implications for Chelsea to begin with is another question entirely, but the payment schedule has absolutely nothing to do with it.

Is that why Maguire got that stupid 6 year deal then?

Is that why Maguire got that stupid 6 year deal then?

Amortization purposes may have played a small part but more likely the decision makers at United just thought Maguire would be one of the leading CBs in the PL for the full duration of the deal so they wanted to tie him up for all his prime years.

Chelsea have also used long term deals for some of our biggest signings (for example Kepa, Fofana, Cucurella) when the player is both a huge financial investment and also of the right age profile. Doing so both spreads the yearly amortization on a longer period than a normal 5y deal and also protects the long term value of the asset. Now with Kepa we've seen the downside to a long term deal when the transfer just doesn't work out, just like you have with Maguire. When it works out it's seen as great business but when the player is a flop it's like an egg to the face.

fair points. we do need to future proof also.

I just think there will be another coming along fairly soon that if we’re quick and smart can get him way ahead.
We could try gazump Benfica on their two Enzo replacements

Not really. What's special isn't just his football qualities. Others would still rather pay less for FDJ with that in mind.

Go watch him against Mexico. Argentina in disarray, a goal away from elimination, Scaloni chopping and changing on the go and on comes this kid and takes full control of the game.

In your lifetime you will see hundreds of players who can pass, shoot, press or tackle like this chap but you will see very few that can boss a big stakes game like that under immense pressure. You don't get that at Asda.

That's the main reason I think stats are only any use for scanning, not deciding.

If only the club had the balls to sign him before benfica did. that’s what we need to change.
In fairness, I'm not sure we could get a work permit. In any case, we would have said he needed to bulk up and go spend a year in the Championship.

Mind, for some time I got Verón vibes with him and haven't fully shaken that off.

The other poster was saying Rice starred in a PL team for years likes it's some achievement, I was just too lazy to pull that one sentence from the post.

As for opponents, how about holding psg to a draw twice

It's easier to be good and effective at dominant teams within their league, rather than a lesser team and still do well against better teams. It's just that you used West Ham being worse than other teams as a stick to beat Rice with, when it should really be a positive.

Julian Alvarez had no issues getting a work permit for City after impressing for River Plate so what makes you think Enzo would have had any problems with it?

When a top club wants to buy a player for reasonably big money (+10M) it's very rare their work permits get denied. For example Chelsea are just about to buy Andrey Santos from a second division club in Brazil and as it stands it's likely even he will get a permit.

The framing here is hilarious

I would love it if United got sold in Q1 of 23' and then just went and blew everyone out the water in the summer.

Enzo
Felix
FDJ
Bellingham
Diogo Costa
Sesko

Just to fulfill the muppet in all of us

I fear Chelsea will get him as their spending seems to be freely crazy. We obviously can't afford him now, in the summer maybe but he'd be the one signing essentially. So it's picking between Enzo and Joao Felix for making a big splash in the summer. Also depends on when we're sold, but nobody knows what that will bring when we are, and it naturally puts a pause on transfers.

I would expect us to have a budget big enough to acquire both of them should we wish. On top of a goalkeeper and potentially a right back too.

  • Enzo - 120m
  • Joao Felix - 100m
  • Diogo Costa - 70m
  • Frimpong - 30m
You expect us to have a 320m budget after spending 220m last summer?

Didn’t the recent numbers show that we have the grand sum of £24m left? Unless we want to get into yet more debt of course.

Maybe we could sell The Cliff for 2bn or something, i´m sure they (our new overlords) can get creative if needed :)

Sell the naming rights of each seat in the stadium. £10m per season per seat.

seat 127 is now known as the 'Felix wage chair' to the ownership

Actually for a defensive minded player like Rice it's much easier to shine playing for a Moyes set up (ala plucky compact underdog).

Look at players like Gravesen and Lescott playing under him compared to when they got their big move. For all of Moyes' faults his system is perfect for a player like Rice.

I don't think my Casemiro example is a poor one by stretch my any imagination. You say Cas hasn't been the primary ball progressor at Madrid, well Rice has played in a team that simply don't bother with such things under Moyes.

The key point here is that you're writing off one for the other based off 4 months of data and a handful of watched matches in very recent times.

'Not on the same level' is madness to jump to based off of that testimony, particularly when you're apparently also choosing to ignore the respective roles they've played for their teams.

Again, they're both quality and I doubt either will end up at United. Depending on how flush Boehly feels, we'll probably be arguing about which one is more important to Chelsea's midfield in two years time instead.

It's not a matter of ignoring the roles they're playing - you are assuming that Rice could play as an 8 and be a more expansive passer in a better team, and I don't think there's any evidence of that. Rice has been equally mediocre at passing for England - about 3 progressive passes a game is shocking for the main 6 of a top international side.

Why am I seeing this Ben Jacobs cnut everywhere these days? He's always banging on about Chelsea. I thought Chelsea was Matt Law's beat.
It is Matt Law, few in the athletic, too. Jacobs knows very little re. club business as a whole. Unless he suddenly has a source in the new ownership, which i dont think is the case

Benfica have said they want to keep him and thank lord for that, hopefully we get our shit sorted by the summer and at the very least nick either him or de jong.

Chelsea are best placed to sign Enzo Fernandez and want to activate the exit clause.

Translation: we dont want to negotiate, pay the clause or feck off

I think Chelsea will end up signing him because they'll know that come the summer window, there may well be much sterner competition for the player.

Mate, that's obviously a negotiating stance. You will get their President to dress like Santa for an 80M profit in 6 months.
