English cricket thread

Good piece. I'd like to judge Root after he gets a rest from a massive summer, but the technical faults (which don't seem massive individually, more like many little things adding up to a big mental and physical burden) and the captaincy issue are huge problems that need addressing if Root is to get back to being the world class batsman he has shown he can be.

The whole test setup is crying out for a root (no pun intended) and branch renovation. We have some good players being made to look worse than the sum of their parts by the current regime, and to be fair some glaring gaps in quality in certain areas.

Because he doesn't have the technique to survive and score runs batting properly.

Most of them don’t.

It’s actually a remarkable turnaround for england the past 4/5 years. They went from being a very good Test batting unit who didn’t know how to smash it around in ODIs/T20s to being utterly dominant in white ball cricket but now don’t have the patience or technique to survive in a Test game.

Oof, what a review that is.

Didn't think it got a nick at all... certainly doesn't look like it did anyway, seems like there was a tiny gap.

Even after seeing the replay, it looked like he missed it... especially the reverse angle

Not sure about that... looked to be a bit of a gap

Warner having a nightmare personal series is one of the few positives of this Ashes.

He's the Adam Lyth of their successful Ashes campaign.

Pretty sure the ball deviates after it passes the bat.

Reckon Warner catches up with it and gets a top edge off the back of the bat.

I really think there needs to be some sort of threshold on Ultra Edge... those sound waves were tiny really, could they not be generated by another noise?

You win as a team and lose as a team and all that but Warner must be finding it hard to show his face in front of the likes of Smith and Cummins during their team meetings and celebrations.

Doesn't strike me as a man with much self awareness or humility to think like that though.

He's on course to have the worst ever series as an opener in Test history .

Warner might as well go home, another shocking innings. Hasn't been the same ever since he hit that guy in nets during WC.

Harris no better either. Smith and Labuschagne should just start the Aus innings from about 10-2, they'd probably still win against us.

Strange I watched that delivery live for Marnus(2.5) and didn't even think that there was an hint of edge and now technology is apparently saying that there was an edge. Must be a very close thing.

I think he'll be the one to get Smith out for some reason.
Yup. Had the same thought. Just saw couple overs but he's more willing to bowl at the stumps than anyone else to smith.

Hasn't he faced more balls than anyone in test cricket over the past year, or something similar?

Possibly, but England are the only side to have played any real number of tests over that period and most of the England side don't have the technique for test cricket!

Marnus is on 46 with 10 fours, seems to score most of his runs with 4s.

Why dont they have hot spot? These are looking like it hits the bat, then you have the third umpire saying 'theres a gap and nothing on ultra edge' even though theres a deviation.

Honestly, this is like Marouane Fellaini suddenly becoming the best player in the world and scoring hat-tricks every game. It's bonkers.

Smith's been on this trajectory for over 5 years. Almost from the moment he made his way into the team solely as a batsman.

Hahaha yeah, for sure. Well, he wasn’t exactly as shit as Fellaini tbf - unless you’re talking about when he started out as a bit of a spin bowler who could bat a wee bit

But yeah. He’s making it look so easy, it’s making a mockery of the sport atm. Literally been the difference between the sides. He has 723 runs in the series and the next best has 370 or so.

Smith is easily man of the tournament. Without him, the two teams are close as can be seen by taking away his runs and replacing it with the average (ok not that simple, but still...)

I dont think it was ever in doubt he would get 50+. If he doesnt get 100 it would be a shock.

Or just look at the third test. Australia win that with Smith because he bats that total out of England's reach

Smith is 18 runs short of doubling Stokes total runs this series (the second highest scored)... In 3 less innings

I know I’m late on this but I’ve only just gotten a chance to start following this match. When next is Root gonna convert a 50 to a century?

I've never seen anything like this.

It's like he's got a cheat code or something.

They've bowled better and Cummins is a brilliant brilliant bowler but Smith is why Australia have retained the ashes. If he wasn't so ridiculous I think England would have won it.

Are the Aussies gonna collapse around Smith before he can make these runs?
