What I don’t understand is that you can clearly see the stump moving there before smith got in. Surely that has to be out
Nope the ball has to be under control before the bail moves. He hit it too early.

I think he's a tad unlucky not to get that. Nothing conclusive to say it was not out, plenty to say it was.
I know that he hits it too early but once he gathers the ball and hits the stump you can see the middle stump move before the bat is in
Middle stump moving is irrelevant. He has to dislodge the other bail.
Bairstow really should just be embarrassed. He has cost England so much

I believe it was because Bairstow hit the stumps and removed the one bail before he had possession of the ball. The other bail then had to be removed while Bairstow had posession of the ball before Smith got his bat in and it wasn't, as far as the third umpire saw.
