English cricket thread

Missed the first hour (overslept) and expected the Aussies to be out of sight. Instead was pleasantly surprised. Great morning for England.

As a side note. After his hundred in this test, only Bradman has more Ashes 100s than Steven Smith.

Seems risky having Andersen, Broad and a half fit Stokes all in the side as bowling options. It'd be a brave selection to drop Jimmy but on this display he seems most likely of the three. If conditions suit him at Headingley he could take multiple wickets though.

I personally think it’s a bit unfair how Broad gets lumped in with the others (not specific to your post just a general comment) as I think he’s generally very reliable for us and we would really miss the momentum he can bring when he’s in one of his spells. But yeah I agree on Stokes and Anderson. Stokes effectively can’t bowl at the moment (or anymore?) so is discounted from the conversation and Anderson has struggled in both games so far, and rarely plays three back to back now.

Jimmy has looked a shadow of himself so far in these 2 tests.

You're probably right regarding Broad, I think there is a perception that he is not a full part of the bowling rotation and needs extended breaks, whether this is fair or not is another matter.

Is Stoke's waiting for surgery on his knee, or is it pretty much incurable now (in terms of world level sport)?

Did Vaughan and KP give England their team talk yesterday?

To be honest, those two bonus Joe Root wickets were massive as well. Took away Australia's momentum.

Crawley will get his 50 and then get out. He's the new Shane Watson in that regard.

Yeah and they damn sure needed it as well, this is Ashes cricket not just any series. We have now a similar platform to their openers. Whether we can take it on from here remains to be seen

This opening partnership is England's highest in the Ashes since Michael Carberry and Sir Alastair Cook got 85 in 2013, 24 Ashes Tests ago.

How sad is that

Lyon is going to be absolutely pivotal here. Not much swing or seam on offer.

If you come down the crease try and wack the ball you fecking idiots. There isn't a worse shot in cricket than leaving your crease to try and nudge the ball.

I don’t even want to read the term Bazball. It’s just shit batting.

Someone must have checked with the match referee to see if England's openers actually doing something was allowed, and word got back.

Lyon has got inside some batsmen's heads.

There wasn't really that much threat there or much turn, and the seamers are struggling.

Just psychological pressure.

Sometimes batsmen get out lads.
There's a script with Crawley that, bless him, he sticks to.

Scores well to high 40s/50+ and then does something pretty stupid and gets out.

Crawley has a relatively low average when you consider his talent, precisely because of his penchant for giving his wicket away with daft decisions.

Aussies whining about the ball. Got to wonder how England manage to wreck the new ball in such a short period of time.

Considering we lost the test match and series 5-0 yesterday this has been a good comeback.

I genuinely did not see this level of competence coming yesterday

Like I said yesterday it's pretty flat normally lords. Lush outfield lots of value for your shots. There is runs to be had.

300-3/4 come the end play and it's right in balance. Or we could fall over in a heap and be bowled out for under 300 but it dosent look like it at the moment.

That's a really weak tail that we have.

They're there to bowl first and foremost but Stuart Broad pencilled in to bat at eight is always concerning.

Surely Robinson at 8 but your point still stands
