Why aren't we playing Bairstow as batsman and bring in Foakes as Keeper
Besides an opener, who would you drop I suppose? I would have gotten rid of Crawley and figured something out but that didn’t seem to be workable.

Anyway Australia on top particularly as tomorrow doesn’t look like a great time to bat.

Yeah take Crawley or Pope out

Nicely poised. Missed chances would have had England right on top.

Big first session tomorrow. Aussies need to get 50+ Infront IMO

Jimmy doesn't look to be getting any joy out of this pitch. Does beg the question why has Wood been left out for him. He is the only fit genuine pace bowler we have.

Why don't we try something funky like Bairstow opening with Duckett. That way you can play Foakes in the team too. We need a specialist Wicketkeeper or Ashes will be gone away from us.

You spend most of your time throwing your toys out of the pram and winging in the Utd forum. Can you give us a break in here.

These are things that England should have thought about before game. Bairstow has played so little Cricket recently. Would have allowed him to bat without pressure of Wicketkeeping.

Well, it's not a given that Australia will cruise past England's score. The ball is still relatively new and England can regroup overnight. I don't see how Australia are 'on top' when they are still behind on the scoreboard and have to bat last. It's going to be hard for them to build a commanding lead if Khawaja and Carey don't take them past England's score, so two wickets changes everything.

But yeah it is a slightly disappointing day for England and Australia have eventually edged it. It could easily have been different as both Khawaja and Carey should have been dismissed, but that's cricket. Australia made some mistakes in the field yesterday as well.

To me, Ollie Robinson does not look fully fit and it does look like a wicket that Mark Wood would get signficantly more purchase out off. That's the one selection mistake for me.

Bairstow isn’t going back up the order to open. He’s clearly found his role in the team. You’re being hyperbolic as usual, we’re still well in this test, let alone the ashes.

So who should move up to opener in order for England to get Foakes into this side. My gut feeling is we won't ever see him & Bairstow together in the team this series.

Agree. I think the batting line up is right. Bairstow made a couple of mistakes but took a great grab to get Labuschagne out and is batting well so I don’t think Foakes needs to be shoehorned in. The problem is that neither Robinson or Anderson have been able to have any impact at all and the former has had a lot of time off the pitch. Combined with Stokes not being available for many overs it’s a lot of pressure on Broad and Ali.

Moeen as an opener and Foakes at 8. Rest of the batting lineup unchanged. Problem solved.

Likely no one, but that doesn’t mean we’ve lost the Ashes mate. They still 82 runs behind despite getting lucky several times yesterday, it’s close one.

I can see the English are back to being on their high horse saying they are saving test cricket with the way they play. Collingwood actually saying that they are so benevolent and they don't play this way to win but are trying to save test cricket.

Piss off, there are multiple ways to play test cricket. Making dull pitches so you can score at 5+ runs an over is not going to save test cricket. It's only turning it into a longer version of ODI cricket, which eventually people will get tired of watching for 5 days.

Surely you're better off just getting Foakes to open and just throw his bat at it in that case?

This test hasn’t been anything like ODI cricket. Are you even watching it?

People talking about the pitch but England created enough to bowl Australia out in a day, with a spinner who hasn’t played test cricket for three years and three 80mph bowlers.

What Collingwood is saying is that teams need to play the same way they do in order to save test cricket, which is too play at over 5 runs an over, that is similar to ODI cricket.

Australia lost only 5 wickets in the innings, how have they been bowled out in a day? England also have an advantage of bowling on a more used pitch than Australia did, such especially helped Moeen with the footmarks.

Agree - with sharper and fitter pace options and a more established spinner England would have gotten well into the Aussie tail yesterday.

Once the cloud/moisture comes in over the next few days this game is going to turn on its head. Could be a classic.

You seem a bit upset mate.

Honest question….does the rest of the world hate the English at cricket in the same way they do at rugby and football?

khawaja looked poor in the last session imo. Great on the pull but loose outside off. I hope he stays in. Australia at parity or 20 more makes this a great game.

In India the cricket view is very indo centric. People mostly watch limited overs and t20. England haven’t historically great at those two formats so aren’t thought of much.

I personally find this bazball stuff insufferable, but it’s definitely not a mainstream cricket fan view. It’s not a dislike English cricket thing for me though, because your cricketing summer is one of my favourite things about the sports calendar.

Saw some debate earlier in the thread about Foakes v Bairstow. The difference Saha, a brilliant keeper, had on the game for us at home, always felt key. Having said that, I don't remember Bairstow being this poor when he was last keeping. The 10 runs he adds over Foakes with the bat has been easily lost.

I said they created enough to bowl Australia out in a day. You’re clearly not watching it so it’s a pointless debate. Bairstow missed an easy stumping, dropped an edge, Broad took a wicket off a no ball. That’s potentially eight wickets and it’s likely that the last two would have fallen. As we speak another dropped.

Foot marks on a day two pitch in England helping spinners? So it’s not a flat boring pitch then.

For West Indies, definitely. England is the old enemy. Beating you guys is far more satisfying than anyone else. I mean...in cricket terms I would guess England are the old enemy for almost everyone since almost all the primary cricket countries are the former colonies.

yeah Bairstow is having a particularly bad innings with the gloves. He’s normally better than this and it’s more of a debate.

Could just be a bit of rustiness after so long out. Clearly any deficiencies will show more against the spinners but it is stacking up against him now.

I said before the test that I thought they needed to find a way to fit both in.

Well shouldn't have played then

bairstow owes us a second innings double hundred off 56 balls.
