English cricket thread

I'll maintain my line it was a shade on the reckless side but if it pays off they deserve all rhe praise that will come their way.
Think if they went back out for the extra 40 Pakistan would have dropped into their shell earlier, plus we wouldn’t have the burst with the new ball we’re due. It was a big risk but if you don’t take big risks you don’t get the big rewards.

Pakistan has collapsed.

That session when they scored 3 off 10 overs was pathetic.

If England win this, surely it has to be the first time ever a team has made 900+ runs in one match and still won the game (not ending in a draw)?

This is brilliant cricket all round.

Surely no longer then 20 minutes left.

Massively frustrating for England right now but doing all they could. Light meter out

Have to say that was a brilliant test.

Fair play England, a monumental victory.

Brilliant test match thanks to England. Pakistan played for a draw and deserved to lose.

Somehow, that turned into a very exciting game. Well done England. Played with a fantastic attitude & wanted to win with the aggressive declaration. It won’t always work, but it’s fun to see.

Plenty for Pakistan’s inexperienced bowlers to improve on.

Fair fecks to England.

Maybe this is sour grapes - but the only reason 'Bazball' worked was because this was the deadest of dead pitches. I don't England would have put on that many runs at that rate if it was a traditional pitch with lots of bounce, and zip etc.

We did it all summer on dodgy wickets.

Blimey, Stokes really can do no wrong. Fair play, I thought that was too generous a declaration but they judged it perfectly. Any more time taken and they would have run out of time. An outstanding victory given the pitch.

We're an absolute disgrace in tests now. Just a pathetic defensive mindset from everyone, highest up the tw*t of a chairman to the coach, selector and captain.

Everyone needs to go. We've gone from being a dominant team at home to being utter whimps.

Hate this test team so much now, from top to bottom.

That is pretty sour. Pakistan would have still needed to bat on said dodgy pitch.

I don't think it was done at such a rate as this test, but fair dos.

We were probably 10-15 mins from a draw, so it wasn't that bad. And bear in mind - we're missing our strike bowler.

2nd innings, quite a few batsmen gave themselves a start but then couldn't change that 30/40 runs to a 60/70 which would have made the difference.

Yes now trying to struggle to a draw at home is our achievement. This is after we already lost to Australia over 3 tests where we didn't have a hope of winning any. Should we just be satisfied with beating the likes of Bangladesh from now on?

England were missing their best batsman of the summer (Bairstow) and their keeper but they don't make excuses like we will. We've become defeatist to think 'oh well Shaheen isn't here might as well pack it in'.

I'm not being reactionary after one test, this is coming from the disgraceful performances against Australia and that we couldn't win the series against a weak Sri Lanka team. We've gone the absolute sh*tter as a test team.

Remember we used to whitewash teams like Australia, South Africa and England at home not so long ago.

But pakistan got to bat on the same pitch. England just played better and deservedly won.

England deserve a lot of credit, don't think there would have been another side in history that could have got a result on that wicket.

Yep, to pull off a result on a pitch as flat as a witch’s tit and giving such a generous declaration. All credit to them.

Well played!

Finishes like that are what make this format so special, the drama of every ball and the sight of an entire fielding side surrounding the batter are awesome.

It was strange to see Pakistan with such a lacklustre bowling attack. Usually there is a mystery spinner and a horde of threatening pace options. I think that helped us a lot to rack up runs without losing wickets at that rate.

I thought the declaration was incredibly brave but probably a bit too risky but they've pulled it off and fair play to them.

An absolutely sensational win, incredible to force a result on that awful pitch. What a year Ben Stokes is having.

Be interesting to see if now Pakistan are 1-0 down do we see more roads for the rest of the series or do they try to spice it up? Might be too soon to do so for the next test.

Not the Pakistan players fault but the PCB and the groundsman deserved to lose for preparing such a fecking road.

Amazing performance by England. Can't speak highly enough of their approach. Only the most confident are willing to entertain defeat in their pursuit of victory.
