England - Euro 2021 Discussion | FA chairman: Southgate to be offered new contract until Euro 2024

I think Southgate's situation is very similar to Ole, seen as a steady hand and popular with the players with many people questioning his ability to successfully capture a major trophy, despite the fact far more illustrious names were in the same job before him and failed to do so.

I'm not sure he is 'that' popular, though. It seems to be something being played up by pundits more than actual fans and players. Even those who think he is doing an alright job won't be all that bothered if he is sacked. His popularity seems to be a bit of a myth. I have never actually heard the players say anything that makes me think that he is extremely popular with them.

-----------------------------

He did what was expected with the team he had in the World Cup considering our opponents, but he didn't overachieve. Our deepest run in the World Cup for a long time coincided with our easiest run. The new contract sounds far more forced than if Manutd gave Solskjaer one.

Who better is available to take over from Southgate at the moment that would want to leave their Club managerial position?
This is where the problem does lie. Personally, I'd love Potter to be given the role but would he leave a PL job to take it? I'm not sure.

Aside from that I'd say Wenger if he has any appetite to return to management and failing him Eddie Howe. Other options would be shaky or just promoting from within the FA which wouldn't fill me with any confidence.

The players have often referred to their being a great dynamic in the squad. It's probably mostly down to the players themselves and a lot of them knowing each other from a young age but I think Southgate deserves some credit there. All hypothetical but I think if Big Sam was still in charge that level of unity amongst the players wouldn't exist to the same extent.

I don’t think any fans or players will stick their head above the parapet to support him.

the criticism from some is so far OTT though it’s ridiculous. Some in here calling for him to be sacked before we have been finished at the Euros, just shows a lack of maturity.

it is however, somewhat ill times of anyone at the FA to be talking about contract extensions. “He has a contract until xxx which we will review at the end of the Euros” very simple reply - but then the FA is an utter shambles.

Southgate is hitting expectations this far. The simple question I have for anyone who wants him gone, is who would want the England Managers job, who could reasonably be expected to do better?

Southgate seems to get credit for just having a good squad. As a manager he's added nothing.

He's worn some suit vests with writing "It's coming home" on last tournament and since then I have noticed there's certain group of people that like him for that. I guess in international football managers don't need to do more than those small things.

Both seem to be decent people, as much as you can judge from a distance. Both managed to get the fans engaged with the team again after a period of disillusionment. Both achieved respectable results (WC SF, 2nd place finish) without dispelling doubts about the quality of the football or suspicions about how much was down to fortuitous circumstances (easy opponents/problems at Liverpool and Chelsea).

As for Southgate, I think we are entitled to expect more than we did under Hodgson or even Capello given the quality of players at his disposal. Taking injuries and available players into account, this is probably England’s strongest squad since 2004. We didn’t win in 2004 of course but, until Rooney got crocked, it wasn’t ridiculous to think we might. So far in these Euros, there’s not much hope to cling to.

Unpopular opinion, but I think England genuinely have a good chance at winning the tournament. We’re not playing thrilling football, but that isn’t really what international football has been about for some time. Successful international teams are pragmatic.

What we are is hard to beat, with a good amount of firepower up front. If he can get that forward line selection right, I think we could beat anyone.

you know that was photoshop FFS? Or perhaps the facts don’t suit your perspective?

Oh we 100% have a good chance of winning the tournament, if we win on Tuesday we should be making he final I think. But it all feels its despite us having Southgate to me.

Look if we 1-0 our way to glory I don't care, but I think we'll come unstuck unfortunately.

You could say the same about most international managers to be honest

Everyone likes to fawn over what Mancini’s done with Italy. It’s entertaining to watch and brings a bit of romance to the tournament, but the likelyhood is they’ll be found out by a more tactically pragmatic team soon enough.

I thought of Eddie Howe too mate

likeable chap like Southgate but I also admire what he achieved at Bournemouth with a decent style

Not a glittering name to satisfy the needy, but for a young manager he’s decent I’d say

Eddie Howe has a fantastic football IQ and I think would be a great future manager of England but it's too early in his career

If, and it's a big if, we beat Germany then we've got the easiest (on paper) road to the final we've ever seen. Football has never been closer to coming home.

The stars really are aligning for us, we simply have to beat Germany. The backlash is going to be massive if we don't.

Denmark are no easy team, they are a team who won't be afraid to play England at Wembley and will attack them from the off, unlike some teams who will play more cautious against England.

I actually fancy Denmark to get all the way to the final now, momentum and a motivation that no other international team have in this tournament after nearly see a teammate die on the pitch.

To be honest I think that suits England. We seem to struggle to unlock the door but can strike when a bit of space opens up.

Is it just me that finds this a bit weird and cringey?

England's team and the media does its best to kill all the sympathy and sabotage the whole plan of actual success.

Just wow. This is another level of cringe and stupidity.

Just like 2018 England are on right side of draw. Would have no chance having to get past some of Italy/France/Belgium even to get to SF.

It's all on Tuesday really. Win v Germany finally in knock out round and players would get huge amount of confidence from that, finally beating "elite" team in a knock out match and beating the biggest jinx there is to England down the years at key stage of tournament.

Of course likely teams after like Sweden and especially Denmark would need to be respected fully but I think England would go one round better than 2018 in that situation.

Would be hilarious everyone slagging off England beatinf Czechs in second gear just to get them again in SF.

The Germany game is absolutely massive. No matter how England play, they need to do what Belgium did today which is just find a way through it. Nobody will care if it's a boring 1-0 to England if they get through to the next round and beyond. No England fan will give a single shit.

I can't predict it. The quality is there for England to do it, but Germany will always be a difficult team to play against. Think there may only be a single goal in it, again like tonight's match.

I think this time you guys have a strong chance of reaching the final. If you beat them on Tuesday, that’s it.

Just like 2018 England are in the 'easy' side of the draw. Wonder if they can go all the way this time?

Possible matches

R16 - Germany
QF - Sweden
SF - Netherlands

Its opened up even more for England

Potential games

R16 - Germany
QF - Sweden
SF - Czech

Hmmm... is this the right kind of motivation... I wonder.
"It's a great opportunity for this team to make some history and give people memories of England-Germany fixtures for the future ...."

He has quite a young team and that sense of history is probably more in Gareth's head than in his players'.
I would put money on England if it weren't for Gareth.

If it's Sweden there, they're not a gimme. If they score first, they are a pain to play against, extremely hard to break down.

Said in another thread a lot of 'big' sides are struggling even if they're ending up going through (Italy and Spain) and now France at the moment. This isn't small teams stealing the odd goal and hanging on for dear life, they all could have won by playing well.

England and Germany might not want to underestimate the likes of Sweden and Denmark :nervous:

Switzerland are playing really well. Been the better team so far. Comfortable lead at the moment.

Lot of criticism aimed at England and Southgate, can I just say this - we are into the 3rd week of the Euros and we are still in it, many other teams have been knocked out either in the group stage (Scotland) or in the knock-out phase (Wales) but we are still there.

Well done England.

Probably famous last words knowing England but 3 clean sheets looks pretty big marker laid down given how the other favourites are generally defending in this tournament.
