England - Euro 2021 Discussion | FA chairman: Southgate to be offered new contract until Euro 2024

Did Woodward agree to take over at the FA after he leaves United?

Gonna waste this generation with a cowardly discount Moyes, and 5 years down the line you'll see videos on YT like "What went wrong with the golden generation?"

I do have serious concerns of that indeed being the case given his defensive mindset

England have conceded just 1 goal in their last 10 matches and just 5 goals in their last 20 matches.

See, I don't really consider that to be too impressive. Partly because a lot of the opposition is a bit crap and partly because... well... when our gameplan focuses so heavily on defence, I bloody well hope we're keeping clean sheets. Most of those matches were with five defenders, two DMs and a goalkeeper. The others saw one fewer defender. If we were keeping loads of clean sheets while also scoring a healthy amount of goals, I'd be more bothered about our defensive record. Trouble is that being able to keep clean sheets against Scotland, San Marino and the Czech Republic is unlikely to be of much use against a team like Germany, particularly because we probably won't score against them.

Off-topic but I never understand why, with all the god-awful popstars we have these days who have never written a song or played an instrument in their lives, everyone goes after Ed Sheeran of all people? I'm not a fan but he's surely far better than most.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Southgate go back to 5-3-2 or 5-2-3 tomorrow. Hope not though. Mid-tournament formation changes are asking for trouble.

He plays absolutely garbage football and lead England to the WC semi final by getting the easiest run of teams I have ever seen.

The only 2 good teams England played they lost.

Panama, Tunisia, Sweden and Colombia are not exactly good.

Belgium beat England twice and Croatia knocked us out.

Well Germany have conceded 33 goals in their last 22 matches.

Well to concede just 5 goals in 20 matches is maybe not amazing but still impressive.

The opponents were
2x Belgium
2x Denmark
2x Iceland
2x Bulgaria
Poland
Croatia
Czech Republic
Austria
Wales
Ireland
Scotland
Romania
Albania
Montenegro
Kosovo
San Marino

the more success you get, the more ‘haters’ you get. I’m not a fan of his, so I just don’t listen to his music.

I don't rate Southgate especially not to coach the current squad.

But the squad in 2018 was not really good.

Only Kane, Vardy, Rashford, Sterling, Henderson, Walker, Maguire, Stones, Trippier, Pickford and Pope were really good players.

The other players were Lingard, Cahill, Jones, Dier, Alli, Welbeck, Young, Loftus-Cheek, Rose, Delph, Butland and a young Alexander-Arnold.

that’s pretty bad! I remember Jones scraping into the squad.

I know Southgate gets slagged off left, right and centre - but who else would, firstly want the job and secondly be a guaranteed better bet?

Harsh on Moyes - he's actually achieved European football for Everton, albeit sparsely, and came close to doing it again with West Ham. Southgate's highlight is guiding the mighty Middlesbrough to a 12th place finish, only to help them get relegated the following season.

Absolutely criminal that a manager of his (lack of) quality is given responsibility over these groups of players.

Or perhaps judge him on his international record. Got to the semi finals of the WC, and we are still in the Euros - so perhaps judge him after the competition has finished.

He plays absolutely dog shit negative football. I only watch England in tournaments so I’m not that arsed. I wouldnt pay a penny to watch a team managed by him though.

Genuinely heartbreaking and infuriating Southgate getting a new contract, we're going to waste one of the greatest generations of talent we've ever had on this bloke. The only way we were getting rid of him was going out in the group stage, and even then the FA seem so infatuated with him they'd probably have still given him a new deal. Just sad.

I get what you’re saying but the football is a bit of a chore isn’t it? Given the attacking talent he has at his disposal there’s really no excuse to set us up like underdogs.

I know it's unpopular here but Southgate did his best for his national team. Actually he was lucky or not he produced semi final appearance for first time in two decades.

FA was stupid to take decision on him now but it's not his fault. He won the group and playing germany in few days time. He should get all the backing from fans. Except Italy and Belgium nobody looked like flying out of the blocks. Will see.

I’d like to judge him on the absolutely dross football too. A team with this amount of attacking talent should not be as static as they are.

There was lot of reasons to set up that way. Kane didn't fire and he looked like fish out of water. He can set up to play expansive football but this is tournament football with one deflection you will go out of tournament. He needed firepower to go toe to toe.

Croatia match england played well but in heat sunny day you can't deliver the full match high intensity.Just give him benifit of the doubt.

it’s been a bit tumescent. I think though, this expectation to play great football and get results at the same time is unrealistic.

Maguire and Henderson being back should help.

Offering him a new contract is stupid. The performances have been dire.

We have scored only two goals with our wealth of attacking intent.

Out of 24 teams, only three have scored less than us.

Don't really get the timing of that statement from the FA CEO. There's no speculation to respond to, there are no clubs desperate to sign up Southgate, the performances have been pretty poor where a second round exit from here would be considered a failure. Just a number of reasons why he should be keeping his mouth shut until after the tournament.

I'd probably do the same. Kinda a mental boost in that when you're going into a game after watching your best bits you can think "I'm actually good and can do this".

Yeah that's what he actually said. The question was something along the lines of "Jack Grealish likes watching comps of other players before games, do you?" He just said not really and if anything he'd watch his own clips to give him confidence.

Is there a single attacking player that Southgate has gotten the best out of? That would be a major concern for me with giving him a new contract.

Who better is available to take over from Southgate at the moment that would want to leave their Club managerial position?

That being said, considering his contract before being renewed went up until the 2022 WC…..I’m slightly puzzled as to the rush to give him a new contract

I like his passion, Southgate is proud to manger his home Nations football team, a renewal of contract isn’t going to make him relax imo, he wants to win the tournament no doubts about it (stating the obvious really)

But I do worry about his ability to harbour such attacking talent. Defence seems strong enough when you look at the stats but our potency in attack with all the flair we have is woefully poor…..2 goals in 3 games at a major tournament with attacking options like

Kane
Sterling
Sancho
Foden
Grealish
Mount
Rashford

to name but a few is quite worrying

the attacking players we have we shouldn’t be sitting back on a defensive game, we should be mixing the hell out of it

such ashame to see, but then if it wins is the tournament with snatch and grab football…I’ll happily throw my beer in the air or at people
