England - Euro 2021 Discussion | FA chairman: Southgate to be offered new contract until Euro 2024

Mostly because, once again just saying England have the easier side of the draw was met with the usual indignation so I wasn’t feeling too enamoured with them at the time.

You have to remember that people from other parts of the UK have to watch twats like Lineker, Shearer, Wright et al go on and on and on and on about England. France v Portugal tonight was a side show to who plays England.
When you have England and three insignificant other nations what do you expect?

History favors Germany, and while Southgate is far too negative, the current sides, you’d have to say England are rightly considered favorites. England haven’t been convincing but have got through easily without getting out of second gear whereas Germany almost went out at home to Hungary.

I think England will be defensive but with the speed on the counters will expose their lack of speed and shade it.

I think if it’s in a neutral venue Germany would be favourites.

I think this time beside the home factor (let’s not forget we still don’t know how Germany plays away from home) there’s 1 or 2 things that may be on England side to take advantage.

For example, I didn’t watched the game against Hungary, but even on the 2 matches before, with Portugal being totally outnumbered I noticed that even when they were completely smashing us they still allowed out of nothing a couple of chances, and sometimes worse than that, it was caused by individual mistakes.

But on the other side I think Low would be crazy to take so many risks at Wembley and probably they won’t be so exposed. Don’t know, they don’t look a totally defensively solid team to win the tournament, and while England has been criticised, defensively they didn’t conceded many chances to the opponents. Wouldn’t bet against England this time.

England have conceded just 1 goal in their last 10 matches and just 5 goals in their last 20 matches.
Pretty damn good numbers. Also, in the group, after the Croatia win (and good performance) there really was no need to overextend themselves. Against Scotland, a draw was enough, and after a good start against Czech, they had the group won. So while not totally convincing, they were very comfortable without having to do much. That’s often the sign of a team that can go far.

Never felt better about my Germany bet than reading this. Reading this one might think the utter turd against Scotland was part of a plan and not a steaming pile.

jokes aside, it’s players like sterling and Kane and the settled nature of southgates tactics that make me feel England will falter

England will face the Germany that spanked Portugal, not the Germany that we saw vs Hungary. Germans always bring their A game vs England. Especially at Wembley. Hopefully I'm wrong but I don't see anything other than a German win.

When does England ever becomes not favorites?

every event, every match, england would be favored by the bookies, it's like theri gold mine.

do the charts include Northern Ireland as well?

I have to say, I don’t think I’ve heard it yet. With 45k fans at Wembley on Tuesday, I’m sure it will get an outing or two.
you mean fans chanting it? If so, I've heard it being chanted a couple of times.
A grand total of 2 goals scored in the group, with Germany to come next. Oh good.
zero conceded, though!

IF there was no chance at all that we could have played Hungary in the last 16 then wouldn't feel such disappointment, having said that maybe this will be a reversal of what happened in 2016 when we did get the supposed favourable tie but crashed out

England need to limit Germany's best players, in Kimmich and Havertz. And I'd be worried if Goretzka is 100% fit. The man is one of the most complete player.

All England fans.
You really mean this? During tournament football that's basically 99% of English people that like football. It sounds more like you just don't like English people. Seems you have quite a substantial chip on your shoulder...

Destined for penalties isnt it?
The headlines really write themselves if that is the case. England has to solve this in full time. Going to extra time with Germany is asking for trouble unless you’re Italy.

I've always thought Southgate is an exceedingly mediocre manager who built a reputation based on easy fixtures and a very friendly media. Time to see if he proves me wrong....I'm not holding my breath

Think Germany will have most of the ball, and to be honest I think they should be favorites for this game. Beat England and the path to the final is wide open for them (probably Sweden and Holland after that).

Hardly a spanking 2 of their goals came from own goals and they hardly looked convincing in that game

Some may be alright. When you have twats in here saying that if you don’t like Gary Lineker talking about England constantly while watching France v Portugal that I should just not watch it or that every other nation in the U.K. is insignificant then it becomes difficult to see England fans in a good light. Let’s not forget this all started because I had the cheek to say England were on the easier side of the draw.

The bracket gives England every chance of getting to the final, but with Southgate in charge, it feels like England will come up woefully short.

Seventh knock out game between these two teams. England has lost the last 5.
1966 as win for England and 1970, 1972, 1990, 1996 and 2010 for Germany.
What's the 7th knock out match? Couldn't think of one.

Against us, the Czech and Croatian teams attacked and made use of their forward players and put goals past our poor defence. We got a 0-0 draw with England because we had no-one to finish chances and England were far too cautious.

With an embarrassment of riches, England should not have been setting up so defensive against Scotland. It feels Southgate is more equipped to play every game in the same manner as opposed to adapting to the opposition. That may well work against the Germans as at least the players know their roles however it’s a strategy which lacks any sort of ingenuity or imagination and will likely be the downfall of the team.

On the other hand, you could argue all 3 of the teams Germany have played are better than any of the teams England have played. Say what you will of Hungary, but neither Germany, Portugal or France were able to beat them on 2nd gear. Two of them weren't able to beat them at all.

I think that Portugal, Germany and France playing each other was actually a benefit for those teams because they could already test what works out against top sides while the rest of the teams barely had proper testing against lower sides.
In the case of Portugal playing both William and Danilo was a big mistake but that would stick against lower opposition and they would pay for that mistake against a proper team in the KO stages.
Hard to dismiss this German side when they held their own again against France, had a good display against Portugal and imo they took the Hungary win for granted before the game even started and therefore had a very underwhelming game.

On the other hand, England has the benefit of playing at home and that could be a game-changer but if England plays the same way they have been playing so far, it won't be enough.

I think its unlikely that we will win. We have not had a single good performance so far.

It's all take one setpiece goal or deflection or one counter to score. I am not saying england will surely win but germany is the perfect opposition to show england s ability in attack.

They play high line with slow defense and midfield with attacking wing backs. There is always space in their defence to attack.

This is the worst German side in a while, England can beat them if they stop the conservative rubbish

which makes you think that if germany continues with the 343, will Southgate go back to playing a 532 like he has in the past?

Germany have looked vulnerable with their back line so maybe playing two up front would cause them a bit more harm especially with England not scoring and effectively creating very few chances.

The best thing England could do is go with Rashford + one other with pace. I think pace could hurt Germany. Kane doesn’t look at the races. If England go out it’ll be a bit of a damp squid

That is a very interesting question. Will the three group F teams benefit from having already had to perform at top gear for 2-3 games, or will they have a disadvantage against teams that have been able to build their game, build confidence and conserve energy? My guess is that they will benefit, but that there may be a tipping point deeper into the tournament. Portugal in particular - if they reach the final, they will likely be playing their sixth consecutive game against one of the seven other top teams in the tournament. While the Dutch won't face one of those teams until the semi final at the earliest.
