England - Euro 2021 Discussion | FA chairman: Southgate to be offered new contract until Euro 2024

Presume the 7 to miss out will be JWP, TAA, Greenwood, Lingard, Godfrey, Ramsdale and White.

Stupid from Southgate to pick a 33 man squad. Just gives the media and fans something to talk about / pick apart. Should have just announced the final squad and been done with it so they can begin preparations for the tournament.

Weak, indecisive management IMO.

Personally I'd take White over Mings and I'd have taken Greenwood (Not really buying the injury story). Also wouldn't taken Henderson due to the injury hit season but I think Southgate will.

Don't think these fringe players really matter though. Only 15 or 16 players will really get used. Not really arsed if they take Mings over Coady, as neither will really play. Or who the third choice Gk is.

that’s what your mum said…

we have no idea to the extent of Maguire’s injury. If it’s minor, and he can fully recover then absolutely I want him to go. Rashford is a more difficult question to answer.

I really don’t know what’s so difficult about it. He’s played a ton of football while injured, his form has taken a nosedive over the past few months, and England are stacked with quality in the forward positions (Kane, Grealish, Foden, Sancho, Mount, Sterling…).

It would be great if Maguire doesn’t go but unlike Rashford, his quality would be more missed at CB, so he’s nailed on to go even if it means being on the bench for the group stages and gambling on him being ready for the knockouts, if England make it there.

Would like to see one of Godfrey/White get taken and Mings/Coady misses out instead, in regards to the forward positions I still cannot tell who is going to get left out of Saka/Watkins either and need TAA for the set pieces with no JWP. So the 7 I think to miss out are Ramsdale, Godfrey, White, Jesse, JWP, Mason & Watkins.

Happy about that and means either Trippier will be left out or one of Saka/Watkins by the sounds of it

It should be Walker Trent and James but watch Gareth bring all 4 and only 1 left back:lol: How I wish we were as stacked at cm as we are rb.

I got a lot of doubts over the fitness of Harry Maguire, and so there's a big probability that he won't be picked or at best he'll be in the squad but not a starter. That's why, especially now with the news of Trent coming out, I think England will pick 4 RBs. I think it was very telling that when asked about the RB position, Southgate just referred to them as footballers that can cover a range of positions.

I know 4 RBs seems excessive, but in reality, Walker and James can play CB, Trippier has been used before at LB (even if he's not convincing there) and Trent has scope to play in midfield.

So if we assumed that Maguire does get selected along with Stones, Mings and Coady, the breakdown of positions could look like:

RB - Trent, Walker, Trippier, James
CB - Maguire, Stones, Coady, Mings, Walker, James, Rice (potentially can play there)
LB - Shaw, Chilwell, Trippier, Saka

CM - Henderson, Mount, Bellingham, Rice, Trent, Foden, Grealish etc

With this in mind, it's very possible that Southgate only takes 3 CBs (Stones, Maguire/Coady, Mings), since he'll theoretically have 3 other players that are versatile enough to play there.

Whatever the selection, I think England have arguably the most versatile squad going into the Euros.

I think Godfrey deserves his place. He has been quality this season. I would take him above Mings or Coady.

I agree but I think Mings and Coady are unfortunately favourites of Southgate.

He can act all "Scoucer first, England second" he wants to be being left out of a tournament squad is gutting and not good for a (young) player's confidence. A longer break would've done him well either but this isn't the end of the world imo (if he's actually included, of course). Chances are he won't be a regular starter anyway.

Don't understand this talk of "Southgate and his favourites". Who are his favourites exactly? The ones who have played well for England under him? This is the thing with English fans in particular. Performances for England tend to not even matter, it's all about who has played best for their club sides over the past month or two. You don't build a successful national side without consistency in selections so if that means taking a player who has played well for three years but has had a dip for three months then so be it.

Sterling, Trippier, Henderson etc.

Consistency in selection? as an England fan, I would 100% prefer changes than seing the same side that played in the world cup.

There are talents like Foden, Grealish, Mount, Rashford, Shaw, Trent, Rice who have all become better since the world cup and deserve to start.

We literally did this for years and got us absolutely nowhere. We didn't pick on form, we picked on name and who the manager likes. Not exactly weird that people want to see a slightly different approach. Of course even though they've been out injured or off form there's players who people will still want in the squad, but not as the majority.

Sterling who has been one of the best wide forwards in the world over the past 3 or 4 years scoring 25-30 goals a season for a side regularly winning league titles. Henderson captain of a pl and cl winning side and Trippier starting RB for La Liga winning Atletico, it's hardly Eric Dier and Fabien Delph we're talking about here. I'm sure some of those you've listed will start as well so I don't see what the issue is, just seems like moaning for the sake of it.

Well then we better bloody win then because we have better options in all their positions than those mentioned. Shouldn’t be picked on name but on form for me.

Sterling has 14 goals in all comps this season actually.

Sancho, Foden, Rashford, Grealish offer alot more than Sterling would.
Trippier has won La Liga doesn't make him the best RB, Reece James has just won the CL and has had a much better season.

Form comes into play, Henderson would be fine to play but hasn't played in over 2 months and the CL was 2 years ago. Phil Jones has won the PL, doesn't mean he gets in the team.

The squad is massively different to the one Southgate inherited and he has brought in just about every young player going in that time, England will have one of if not the youngest squad at the tournament. What else do you want from him exactly? We haven't even got to the first game yet and it's all Southgate picking his favourites again. Which of his supposed favourites shouldn't be there? Mount was one of his favourites too once upon a time, now he's rightly one of the first names on everyone's teamsheet.

I can't answer that as I've not mentioned Southgate picking his favourites. We'll fail at the tournament because the bloke is clueless, not because of who he picked. We've got a good enough squad to win it.

I can't fathom why anyone would want to play Henderson given the team we've got. We've actually got some midfielders that can play for once.

I hope we don't just go for a defensive midfield and to compensate and tolerate wide men who don't track or press.

I disagree entirely. What if some players were injured in the European finals? He'd then have to call players up as replacements which would've caused problems as they could already be on a Portuguese beach and they'd also know they were effectively backup options. Media and fans will always have something to talk about / pick apart.

I honestly don’t understand why fans are bashing it. It’s logical, and it’s managing risk.

it’s Southgate bashing for the sake of it. Criticise him, fair enough, but not for something that’s just plain sensible.

Yeah plenty to pick at about Southgate, but picking the 33 man squad was just logical and sensible. If he'd not done it, he'd have got stick and people would have said he's taking a risk with too many of his selections.

4 right backs in

Can't wait for Southgate to get fired

Wow, 4 RB's for a tournament, what is Gareth smoking?

Rashford: “I’ve been playing with injuries for the latter half of the season but sure I’ll go to the Euros!” :wenger:

Four right backs is a bit silly, but with the bigger squad and Greenwood apparently injured, I don't think White, Watkins, JWP, Godfrey and Lingard are that valuable.

I can understand the 4RBs being in given at least 3 of them are fairly versatile. Mings shouldn't be near though. Could easily have picked Lingard or JWP over him to give more squad balance.
