England - Euro 2021 Discussion | FA chairman: Southgate to be offered new contract until Euro 2024

I don't think Lingard should be going, so the right decision there. It's also better for Greenwood not to go and recover from whatever niggle he has than go and hardly feature.

From the sounds of things JWP and Trent won't be going so that leaves Southgate with three more outfield players to drop. I'd imagine Watkins, Godfrey and White are the most likely not to go.

Baffled by this. We've probably the best collection of players in terms of ability since the 'golden generation'.

The Euro 2016 squad was awful in comparison. Forster, Hart, Heaton, Bertrand, Cahill, Clyne, Lallana etc..

None of Kane, Rashford, Foden, Grealish, Mount, Bellingham, Sancho, Stones, Shaw, Chilwell, James, Walker, Rice or Maguire are average.
I’ve looked at the squad again and I guess you’re right. If he gets rid of the average ones it’s good squad. I still don’t think we will win it though, we will find a way to mess it up. Penalty shoot out, wrong team selections, that type of thing.

Could do with Rashford not going to recover more. But that won't happen.

England are, as ever, lop sided. There's some genuine European Championship winners quality players in there, and if everyone was fit England SHOULD be favourites.

If you went on pure talent with everyone playing at their best you could have:

Henderson
TAA-Maguire-Gomez-Shaw
Henderson-Rice
Sancho-Mount-Rashford
Kane
And that side could beat ANYONE. You could sit and argue about dozens of players -not- in that lineup. Foden, Sterling, Bellingham, wan-Bissaka, Calvert-Lewin, Stones. . . so the idea for me is that among the English footballers there's a potential side that could beat ANYONE. Southgate won't find it or pick it, unfortunately, so they'll fall short like they always do. But the talent is there for once.

Defence and midfield are not good enough. Henderson and Rice has zero creativity in there at all - that defence is pretty terrible also. England have a ton of very talented attacking players and will probably blow away less talented sides because of that but against the better teams that midfield and defence will get exposed badly.

You’re underrating DCLs linkup play massively. It’s one of the best things about his game. Watkins is just fortunate enough to be around better attacking players in that general area who play off his linkup compared to us having Richy and that’s it.

Maybe, i'm underrating DCL's link up play.

Also I didn't say DCL is bad CF, I rate him. I rate Watkins higher from what I watched.

Watching the Liverpool fans meltdown on Twitter about Trent Alexander-Arnold is quite something

I agree he should be going. He’s clearly good enough to at least make the squad it’s madness from Southgate.

This whole pick 33 players and then a week later send 7 home is just idiotic.

There was no need for it, none of the city united and chelsea players have even arrived with the squad yet, and hes got to cull the team.

If there were any injuries, he could have changed them any time.

All he's doing is getting hopes up then dashing them. Can't see that's healthy for the younger lads.

He’s gone after this tournament anyway imo. Win or lose.

I wouldn't be shocked. At least one of White/Godfrey will go home but I could see Southgate keeping Godfrey and dropping Saka for CB cover.
Could do with Rashford not going to recover more. But that won't happen.
He needs it more than anything and given his form he shouldn't be starting either but unfortunately it won't happen.

Defense is good enough. RB is stacked with quality players, Walker, Trippier, Reece James, TAA. So much quality that even TAA can miss out.
CBs they have Stones and Maguire, both among top 5 CBs in the league this season
They have Shaw and Chilwell as LB options. That's great options tbh.

Midfield is bit tricky, they have very good link players like Mount who can play as 8, players like Grealish or Foden who can play in midfield 3 alongside players like Rice and Henderson. They still lack that tempo setter player, who can calm things down.

I am assuming Greenwood's injury is him and United attempting to save face from not being selected.

Does anyone believe England have a realistic chance of winning the tournament?

They were favourites a few weeks ago, but are now second favourites behind France.
If England win their group, they play every match at home apart from the QFs. That's a big deal. England's best chance to win a major tournament for a long time.

I'm sure he had private conversations with them if they were likely to be dropped. I'm sure quite a few of them are just happy to be there, as it's an opportunity to put yourself in a good light with the World Cup next year. It will hurt for the likes of JWP, Lingard and Trent but for some of the others like Ramsdale, White, Godfrey and even Watkins, I think it could be a positive experience.

With so many players having not arrived yet, the bigger squad does at least help fill the gaps for the friendly tomorrow too. If all the United, Chelsea and City players were in the 26, the squad would currently only have 14 players for the game tomorrow. A few players returning from injury (Phillips, Henderson and Grealish) and there would be no left back.

I think this is the year football is coming home. Really. This is your year.

I thought it was sensible. Half the squad were involved in the European club finals and their fitness and injury statuses were unknown. If players from that group were going to drop out like Greenwood has then it's better to have players in the camp already so their fitness and how they fit into the group is known. All the players that were in the extended group will have known that they were fringe players.

I think this tournament is too soon for Greenwood. Bear in mind, there's the world cup in just a year and a half.

I agree, however the way they are making this out that Southgate has sacrificed something between the mother Theresa and a prime Cafu

I have everything crossed that TAA is not picked. Twitter fans are generally pricks as I'm sure Rashford will confirm so any meltdowns there are not reflective.

TAA has been running on fumes for ages and needs a proper two month break. So do all our players but I'll take what I can get and I would love it if TAA gets a break.

Yeah that's fair, you could probably say that about the United players as well, I'll be ok with Maguire being sent home (which I'd think is going to happen) and Rashford pulling out (no chance).

I would take Trent for what its worth I don't think Walker, James or Trippier are any better than he is.

What will be interesting is to see how Southgate lines up without Maguire being available personally I think he goes back to 3 at the back and if that's the case Trent should be 1st choice.

My guess for the 7 axed from 26 are: -

The 3 below are known maybe due to reports or confirmation: -
  • Lingard (as per the reports)
  • Ward-Prowse (as per the reports)
  • Greenwood (confirmed withdrawal due to injury)
The 4 below are just my guesses
  • Ramsdale (the other 3 GKs are way better)
  • White (not experienced enough, 1st EPL campaign & not needed).
  • Godfrey (not needed as there is Maguire, Stones, Mings & Coady).
  • TAA or Reece, can't tell what Southgate would do but he might keep TAA.

I think Godfrey deserves his place. He has been quality this season. I would take him above Mings or Coady.

Mings in particular is absolutely shite, no idea how he's playing for England.

I disagree a bit I mean sure the centre of the parks not perfect for England but then you've got like Bellingham coming through, Kalvin Phillips, players like that - Henderson was good enough for a PL and a Champions League. You don't always need a "perfect" squad either, and I'd argue that in terms of what we have available to pick you could easily -find- a perfect squad, except for maybe in midfield. The stupid number of options England have in every other position is the thing that gives England fans encouragement -in a vacuum- but obviously there are squads out there that would probably dominate them (Belgium, France, Germany, Spain, Brazil etc)

Coady has been crap this season. Is Jordan Henderson even likely to be ready for group stage games? He's not even played in midfield since last year has he.

He had to name a provisional squad according to Uefas rules didnt he?

I agree with you by the way.

he can’t send home James after the CL final?!

I think you are right with the others. It will have been good experience for the lads who don’t make it though. I don’t subscribe to this narrative that it’s been a waste of time. With so many players away you need a squad to make the best use of training time, and they were there is case they needed to be called up due to an injury.

far better to send lads home that have been training with the squad than to call up players at the last minute.

I wish Rashford would pull out too. If ever a player needed some time to rest and recover, it’s him. England have Grealish, Sterling, Sancho, and Foden for the wide positions.

He will be ready for the group stage, though not sure if he will start. From what I gather he's been in training for a while and was also on the bench for Liverpool's final game of the season. Had a check and you're right about your last point, he's not started in midfield since 30th December against Newcastle in a 0-0 draw.

I'll not be surprised if he kept TAA, because Walker & Trippier are dead cert to be in the 26, so it's definitely TAA or Reece, he cant keep 5 RBs (Walker can play RCB in a 3)
