England - Euro 2021 Discussion | FA chairman: Southgate to be offered new contract until Euro 2024

this is a team that can do some work, up to southgate now...

pickford
walker maguire stones
taa rice jude/mount shaw
foden kane grealish

With all the rumours last night and this morning that Trent was out, and then being in, do we reckon he was put in when Greenwood pulled out?

I reckon he bottled the TAA decision. Four right backs. Unbelievable.
Everyone is calling it the TAA decision but that’s stupid, he’s a very good player. Having Trippier in there is just stunningly incompetent, he’s worse than the other 4 English rightbacks.

I don’t see it with that team. Nowhere near enough pace and threat in behind.

He had to include TTA to avoid the wrath of the Liverpool media.

4 right backs and only 5 midfielders in the squad. You honestly couldn't make it up.

To be fair, several of the players listed as forwards play in midfield. Foden, Sancho, Saka and Grealish could all conceivably be considered midfielders too. Also, Southgate mentioned he would consider TAA in midfield so I think we have plenty of cover there

What surpirises me is Watkins missing out with only 2 other strikers in the squad in Kane and DCL. If one of them gets injured, we are severely lacking in options up top

Because all the reports over the last week or so were TAA is set to miss out. He's shit the bed after the backlash imo.

And Trippier has been excellent for Atletico.

4 RBs and only 2 number 9s is silly.
The RBs are fairly versatile and Watkins isn't. I do think it's a bit silly but it's not like it's preventing something that should definitely go.

Possibly, the BBC indicated that Greenwood was set to be part of the 26 man squad.

He can act all "Scoucer first, England second" he wants to be being left out of a tournament squad is gutting and not good for a (young) player's confidence. A longer break would've done him well either but this isn't the end of the world imo (if he's actually included, of course). Chances are he won't be a regular starter anyway.

Gareth is a fecking arsehole. He's not doing TAA any favours. He's saying I don't want to take you but oh alright then, I'd better take you. I'm definitely not scouser first, England second. I'm fecking England nowhere while it's run like a White Old Boys club.

TAA is not physically tired, he is mentally gone. Like Sadio. TAA needs to be on a beach thinking of nothing. Not being on someone's leash for another couple of weeks.

And do you actually think TAA will lose confidence because of being dropped by a nomark when Klopp is personally looking out for him? You should watch Klopp interviews more.

If he does play the back 3 he definitely deserves the sack. Horrible negative manager.,

I don't think 3 at the back is negative at all. It all depends on how we play it.

Belgium, who are ranked number 1 in the world, also play with three at the back. We've seen Chelsea win the CL with it.

Does it have to exhilarating football? No! It's a tournament and ultimately, it'll be about finding the right balance.

I'm gonna be rooting for England unless Southgate makes some idiotic decisions, like letting Shaw rot on the bench in favour of Chilwell :)

Worried about the lack of cover at right back

Incredibly strong squad but is Mings really a better choice than Dunk, Godfrey or White? I'm also somewhat surprised at Saka making it.

Probably not but the fact that he's left-footed goes in his favour.

As for Saka, he's had a good season for a poor Arsenal side. He's young and versatile. He'll be able to play LB, LWB, LW and RW if needed.

He’s not on form though that’s why he’s in.
Hardly.

Trent has finished the season well, was the best RB in the country last season and has proven his class.

Walker has just won the league and been to a champions league final and played very well.

James has just come off a great season and won a champions league final as MOTM.

Tripper has had an okay season in a nice sunny spain, where the standard of the league is probably at its weakest level in two decades. How is he getting in above the three above?

If trent plays and fecks up now, all hell will break loose.

If he doesn't play, then southgate will forever be accused of taking him just because he'd get a backlash if he didn't.

The worst scenario would be trent screws up in defence, and a couple of the midfielders get injuries.

So I'm now assuming that is what is coming,

Thing is, Mings is probably the only aggressive CB we have. If the ball's in the air waiting to be won, he'll go for it.
Likely stamping and elbowing his way for it, mind.

Lingard isn’t a central midfielder. I’d honestly take TAA in midfield over JWP too.

So you'd play TAA in a midfield 2? good luck with that.

Lingard offers us squad squad depth in attacking midfield whilst JWP central.

You cant just put a player in midfield and expect him to perform at that level, TAA isn't and never was a midfielder.

Id understand if the plan was to play 5 at the back because Walker/Trippier can play that third CB spot and go forward but everything indicates 4 at the back and there's no reason to take 4 rb's.

Can dress it up however you want but there is never any justification for taking 4 right backs to a major tournament, forget versatility, pick your best 26.

Might as well have taken AWB at this point. 3 extra slots and uses two of them on right backs...ah well. If it's a case of taking Greenwood's place, then it might as well have been TAA.... Watkins wasn't getting game time.

What's happened to Stones? Injured? Four right backs is nuts, I knew Southgate would screw it up.

Edit: He's in my bad.

I guess that makes sense, but I'm also biased against Mings because he comes across as a huge thug to me.

Chilwell will be first choice in my opinion.

That'll anger me. No way Shaw should be behind him in the pecking order when he's arguably the the best LB on the whole continent.

Apparently he's starting Lingard in the next friendly though?? absolutely clueless

Coady is the bigger issue, I think. He's been in poor form this season.
