England - Euro 2021 Discussion | FA chairman: Southgate to be offered new contract until Euro 2024

Southgate's lack of tactical acumen is letting England down. When things aren't working, he's really poor at adjusting the system or changing the game from the bench. Substitutions tonight were obviously a case of "throw him on and hope he can do something" - totally ill-thought-out.

For good reasons, he's not been playing well for quite a while now and tehre are just too many better options.
Yeah, I don’t think going from not starting him to not starting him does much to help you out though.

I can see england crashing out of the group stage now.

Isn’t that almost impossible with four points now?

I get that we just had a Pep/Tuchel CL final. So obviously their tactics are effective.

But why did James and Sterling simply refuse to go forwards? I just don't understand. The number of times James had space out on the right, like 10 yards in front of him, and he chose to stop, put his foot on it then look back to Rice...it's just modern football.

And Sterling was back to 'proper City Sterling': receive ball, quickly turn, take two steps forward, stop, wait for defender, play it backwards.

It's all so negative, and I can't work out why.

He definitely told the full backs to be cautious. Shaw was far far deeper than he plays for United.

I don't quite follow this logic.

We'd have to play a quality side in order to win the thing, so what difference does it make?
Could always fluke it. I get your point but meeting Sweden is a far easier game for the next round and I'm not sure I fancy England to beat Portugal or Germany if they win this group by beating the Czech republic.

Kane looked like he could barely move.
Sterling sees the pass but then decides he's going to try and wriggle through 3 defenders on his own.
Two defensive midfielders, with a huge gap between the sitting two and the front four, isn't going to have much joy against a back 5.

And generally speaking, 4-2-3-1 with a defensive 2 is the dourest formation in football.

We were poor against Croatia which was masked by the media wank-fest in classic England style.

The amount of attacking talent in this squad is the highest I can ever remember, and yet we’re absolutely terrible offensively. Southgate is so out of his depth here.

The double-DM disaster needs to end next game. One of Philipps or Rice, with two offensive #8’s is the way we need to go. Sterling has been really poor in both games, time for Sancho.

Rooney
Owen
Lampard
Scholes
Beckham
Gerrard
J Cole

Or

Gazza
Mcmanaman
Shearer
Sheringham
Fowler
Cole
Les Ferdinand

These sets of players were better, and had a better defence behind them. Let's stop over hyping these current players. They have achieved nothing yet.

England really like having average managers, he needs to do better with the squad he has.

Is it a case of Southgate not knowing his best eleven, or thinking he does and having it wrong? I’d say it’s the later, I can’t see many changes going into the last match.

It’s absolutely stupid in my opinion.

Unless they have a play-off or something. But how you can have play-off if 3 teams have the same points ? Seems like a rule favouring the big sides.

I think the good old goal difference should be used.

England were so underwhelming.

Yet another tournament where they flatter to deceive.

Sure England will qualify (might even top the group), but they're so dull and uninspiring.

Southgate :lol::lol::lol:

Yeah, I just cant' see this English side winning against any of the top NTs, let alone being second-favourites after France.

If they get Portugal or Germany it's game over

Current lot are all worth 100 million each :wenger:

First Modric and then Gilmour.

We can't keep this midfield. The aforementioned two have controlled the midfield against us and it's going to cost us. We need to play two of Grealish/Foden/Mount centrally because they'll have the impact for us that those players had for Croatia and Scotland.

True, but that first group of players may all be great names, but especially in finals, most of them were piss poor in an England jersey. ALso its too early to judge a lot of this side as they are so young....but you are right, havent achieved diddly for ENgland yet most of them

And the OTT praise after the Croatia game. The praise the likes of Rio,Neville, Lampard were throwing at this team.
Why do they do this?

Southgate should switch it up next game. Start Bellingham, Grealish, Sancho, and Trippier

I agree and he also needs to consider dropping Kane who looks miles off the pace. Tonight’s performance could be a blessing in disguise of it makes him change his tactics and starting eleven, not going to hold my breath though.

Croatia is playing Scotland so they can't finish below 3rd. And there won't be more than 4 teams on 4 points who finish 3rd.

So croatia or scotland can also go through even if one of them wins and england loses its game.

Not comparing Southgate to Solskjaer but much of the poor points being raised are very similar when comprehensively observing United. Midfield that is set up to be conservative vs creative. Team looks like a bunch of individuals, poor build up play, expecting substitutes to make a difference individually compared to tactically.
