England - Euro 2021 Discussion | FA chairman: Southgate to be offered new contract until Euro 2024

Fetched Rashford and Grealish on and let them both play on the left. Clueless manager.

Southgate surely must go after this euros, completely wasting one of the best attacks in europe

I get that we just had a Pep/Tuchel CL final. So obviously their tactics are effective.

But why did James and Sterling simply refuse to go forwards? I just don't understand. The number of times James had space out on the right, like 10 yards in front of him, and he chose to stop, put his foot on it then look back to Rice...it's just modern football.

And Sterling was back to 'proper City Sterling': receive ball, quickly turn, take two steps forward, stop, wait for defender, play it backwards.

It's all so negative, and I can't work out why.

It is a bit like watching United with the two DMs and the reliance on a bit of magic. Relative to its talent this team should be playing a lot better.
The difference to me is that this is the same England approach like under previous managers. You can go back to managers like Sven Goran, it felt the same.

We were poor against Croatia which was masked by the media wank-fest in classic England style.

The amount of attacking talent in this squad is the highest I can ever remember, and yet we’re absolutely terrible offensively. Southgate is so out of his depth here.

The double-DM disaster needs to end next game. One of Philipps or Rice, with two offensive #8’s is the way we need to go. Sterling has been really poor in both games, time for Sancho.

Grealish, Bellingham and Sancho should be starting for us. I'd personally drop Declan Rice and pair Kalvin Phillips with Bellingham in the next game.
Yep. Midfield 3 of Mount, Bellingham and one of Rice or Phillips behind 2 of Sancho/Rashford/Grealish either side of Kane. Or put Grealish in the midfield 3 and put Rashford and Sancho on the wings.

England's generation is going to be wasted because Southgate is a moron.

This England team feels so disjointed and very slow, Foden shouldn't have started, he would've been good coming off the bench against tired leges, Grealish should've started and perhaps Sancho with James on the right might've worked, Scotland worked very hard and did their best

I just found it hilarious how all our attacks invariably go backwards. Sterling, Foden then Grealish get towards their box and ,instead of going on the outside, pass back.
Piss easy for the Scots tonight.

Scary how similar England are to United
Tactically inept manager, two poor defensive midfielders and relying on a moment of magic

And that midfield of Phillips and Rice, actually the later is so far back its embarrassing to even call him a midfielder going by these past two games.

Well the positive for England tonight is that they are qualified to the next round, 99% at least.

Agree with this. It would allow more of England’s attacking talents to be played. Can’t stand this negativity.

I agree he shouldn't be starting on the wings. However, centrally, I think he's definitely worthy of starting. He may not score and create, but his game allows the teams general play to excel.
I'd like to see him used there as a sub, can't really justify him over Mount or Grealish and at the same time Bellingham might give it better balance with Mount or Grealish. It's a hard one. But I just think picking 2 DMs mean you need your most creative attackers in the 3, which is Sancho and Grealish as 2 of them without a doubt.

Things to do:

1. Pick Maguire if he’s ready
2. If Maguire is in defence, rearrange the midfield to bring in more creativity
3. Drop Sterling - running a bit and then miscontrolling the ball is not going to do it at this level
4. Drop Kane - he looks like he’s aged 20 years

3 of these things might happen.

Yes it was. Wish I'd stayed in bed.

Why on earth does Sterling keep getting picked?

No idea mate. He ended the season in terrible form. He was OK-ish in the first game but was back to being dreadful tonight.

Kane and Sterling can't start the next game.

Go on Ian Wright, it was embarrassing.
Hard to disagree with him, Foden should have stayed. Sterling and Rashford should not be first 11 for the rest of the competition.

We do not have a CF thats playing well enough at the moment, and we are picking the wrong wide players.

Sancho, Grealish, Foden, use these players when possible.

Rashford hasn’t been first eleven yet in the competition.

Southgate thinks he’s some sort of iteration of prime Mourinho — neglecting technically gifted players for his ‘philosophy’. Hasn’t got a clue.

Yep, it was laughable.

This team was allergic in attacking the width. Everything was all about coming inside and trying to draw Scotland out centrally. It was so obvious from Southgate and the Scots read it early in the game and stuck to it.

James not even going once down the sides is disgraceful, imo.

I actually thought Foden was getting into the game right when he was brought off.

Best thing to happen to England. Reality check for all the players and coaches plus hopefully a dressing down to Southgate so he will actually start our best and in form players. A Phillips-Rice midfield is not winning us anything.

In general I prefer Foden to Mount but, after tonight, I wouldn't be against that. Still, I think Grealish and Foden as a combo centrally will take our general play up a level, and that combined with two of Sancho/Rashford/Sterling out wide is the way to go.

Sadly, I don't think Gareth will change.

I was really disappointed with how negative England were.
It was unbelievable the amount of times they passed the ball backwards.

Rice and Phillips duo may work against teams who look to have possession in midfield but its not going to work trying to break down a team set up defensively.

The only excuse I can think of to stick with that duo was that Southgate just wanted to secure a draw to confirm qualifying with the groups, which is boring but I suppose the main aim at this stage.

Yeah, did brilliant to launch a counter that Kane wasted.
